    Hey I LOVE WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING! This has been the best video I have ever seen to ever highlight some of what I've seen & learned in 20 years of walking w/whitetails!. Great job!personal experience while sitting with bedded deer backs this up. Being present with my deer in their suburban bedding area as a known fenced dog threat was expressing, a secondary "distractive" threat would cause retreat 200' away..IF A PERSON WHISTLED OR CALLED THE DOG, IT WAS STRAIGHT TO COVER & DEPART!
    *Seeing the limited movement & consumption without interruption(finish the last bite)after the clear flinch of the big doe brought a HUGE smile to my face.. the sequence of "completion of priorities as processing threat & keeping low profile" similar to others continuing eating as "sentry" locks onto threat(all others at get as much eaten before they bolt)
    *We need to remember deer "hold their cards close" & have @ least 5 levels of reaction priority..of which herd hierarchy, situational confidence, and experiential knowledge all affect. Seeing deer react while in traveling stack, point deer alarm, bolt, return from new vantage (as stack stopped..based on confidence of being unseen/ no contact where as the point deer "works" the threat & they observe..low profile ..) we had a relaxed but increasing awareness gradient from the back to the front of the stack.. it's amazing to be part of! Why I love my deer, , am devising a way to document as I can!
    KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE SAYING is key..if YOU or any RESULT of you affects the environment in a way deer don't find routine, or find doesn't make sense, they'll spook.
    The power of being still is many times stronger than that to run, and
    "Decoy-return to investigate" compulsion, exercising stealth to satisfy curiosity/knowledge mandate, is beautiful to watch, but keeps them from consumption-rumination-rest cycle.
    EXCELLENT WORK! This helps folks get into the minds of deer..gives a much better perspective!

    Deer on my farm are use to me and my farmer routine. I can walk within 20-30’ of them and they’ll just watch me. I talk to them as I walk around the farm doing things to let them know I’m around. If I become silent, sneak up on them or do something that isn’t a usual farming routine, they’ll spook.
    But I get the message in this video. That’s why I prefer to hunt, fish, and photograph wildlife alone. You see way more wildlife when you’re alone mainly because two or more people are more likely to talk.

    Interesting findings. I would have imagined that the dogs and humans would have been the top since in the south some folks use packs of dogs to hunt. I imagine that proximity to the sounds plays a role in their reactions.

    😁👍🦌
    You guys do great work! I wish there was an easier way to capture all the moments of their daily lives through the seasons..there is so much to them..it's hard for us to "get into their perspective"
    I've walked with local deer matriarchy for over 20 years, I've seen so much, but we haven't yet found a good way to capture in the neccessary totality their interaction with the world..
    Their differentiation of voices and scents, threat level processing of the factors in the environment are amazing.. the least thing that doesn't belong brings the alarm.. deer can't "see" with acuity of detail, but see rather "qualities" of movement and spatially "see location" overlayed over their vision.. combined with amazing scent sensitivity, it's absolutely amazing how aware they are of the world around them..they just VACCUUM UP all that is going on around them, & carry on meanwhile as neccessary..
    I love when folks get to the point where they "see" and start "synchronizing" with deer & their environment.
    Thank you for all your work speaking for these majestic animals' ways👍

    I sure agree, especially as fall comes and human activity in the woods increases.
    My experience of 60 years in the WV woods of what scares deer the most is, most frightening to least: humans or ATVs>coywolves>coyotes or dogs>bears. We've discovered over the years that the less human intrusion, the better. Timbering activities however, do not seem to bother deer and in fact, draw them due to newly felled trees or mast knocked to the ground.

    Do you think having the bait piles put them on edge?

    • @DeerAssociation
      @DeerAssociation  2 роки тому +2

      Maybe. But two things we know: Hunting over bait is prohibited on the Jones Center (study site) even though it is legal in the state of Georgia, so these deer are not being hunted around corn piles. Also, the study was done in spring/summer, long after hunting season had closed.

    maybe the deer was going out for a pass ?

  • @chilibean3000
    @chilibean3000 2 роки тому

    Maybe what they're reacting to is an unfamiliar sound and not necessarily the call of a predator, human or otherwise.
    That's probably why some deer weren't spooked by the coyote call. That's a familiar sound to them.

    • @DeerAssociation
      @DeerAssociation  2 роки тому +1

      That's why the sounds of non-threatening bird species were included, as a "control." As expected, deer reacted far less often to bird sounds than to any of the predators. This suggests there's a connection between the threat level associated with each species and the deer's reaction.

    Does anyone know what the numbers at the bottom of the "Probabality of Deer Fleeing These Sounds" chart stand for?

    • @DeerAssociation
      @DeerAssociation  2 роки тому

      It's a percentage probability. So, for example, you can say that deer fled from the sound of a human 60% of the time (0.6 in the chart). And about 20% of the time for coyotes. So on.

      In WV bears could be contributing to the deer being on edge. I hunt in S GA and in the Smokies. Deer in the Smokies are the flightiest deer I’ve ever hunted. I attribute a lot of their behavior to bear.

  • @brandiwynter
    @brandiwynter 2 роки тому

    I'm not surprised, I've played different animal sounds around my cats just to see the reaction. Coyotes put them on alert and they were definitely nervous but play the sound of wolves and they lose their minds. They obviously have no idea what a wolf is. Other predators like cougar and bears get little to no reaction.
    This makes me wonder if it's a built in fear of wolves on a genetic level or if there is something else about the howl itself that creates this reaction. In other words is it the howl or perhaps a specific individual sound in the howl? It would be fascinating to break down a wolf howl into it's individual notes and see if the reaction is the same playing them.

    They can overcome that fear pretty quick. I've had deer that wait for me to talk to them. Still feel kinda guilty about the first buck I killed with a bow. Use to be a guy from my home town that could pet a full herd. Even put big ribbons on them during hunting season. Heard story of dudes killing his deer with ribbons. Yes they were wild deer.

And " IF " I make them the target !!!!!!!!! Ive had neighbors report me for shooting deer........because.......they go by and see the deer standing close by. Question is........when does it become illegal........when your shooting........or when your shooting and " just happen " to hit a deer ????

    • @francisconti9085

      Deer are hardwired reflexively for threat awareness and processing, this carries over to social/hierarchical interactions..subtle eyes/posture nonverbal communications are HEAVILY intent biased in perception..in other words, they pay attention to effect of actions and note any predatory fixation which could lead to a threat. They key on being focused upon..
      They will keep doing their "job" collecting food right under CONSTRUCTION or tree felling so long as not seen or focused upon. Noise keeps predators away, & deer will exploit. I watched my wild deer as they closely (100' away) watched the Bar& Grill constructed on edge of one of their bedding areas..they disregarded the business, all the traffic..not ignored, but prioritized as they respected potential threat..they just didn't pre-react.
      Deer manage their security by intense knowledge of routines & events of their environment, their curiosity is a strong instinct to support this end.
      They KNOW you even if you didn't see them..they know within reason what to expect of you if they allow you to see them..😉👍

It's not that humans are the worst predators. I can talk to the deer in my neighborhood all day long. I get into staring contests with 10-point bucks.
