  • RetroSkins friends, your angry emails and letter-bombs were received, as so - by demand - we're back to RFK!
The 1990 Redskins were coming off back-to-back non-playoff seasons in '88 and '89, with a big part that lack of success stemming from struggles winning at home. That all changed with this game, the '90 season opener against everyone's favorite houseguest, the Phoenix Cardinals. The Redskins beat the visiting Cards for the 12th straight season, kicking off a delightful 22-4 RFK run covering Joe Gibbs' final three seasons.
This one is a bit bittersweet, as it marked the return of Joe Bugel, the long-time O-line coach for Washington who ventured out to Arizona to try his luck at head coaching. The turnover-prone Cardinals' 31-0 defeat had Buges throwing his headset in disgust (that's what we loved about him!) as the Redskins rolled with ease on this cloudy opening day at RFK.
This tape is a little on the grainy / noisy side, but we did our best with it.
The venerable Dick Stockton along with Merlin Olsen on the call as the Redskins get back into playoff gear.

Love the Hogs being the first guys to run over to Bugel at the end of the game.

Joe Bugel tried the absolute best he could considering he was in the ultimate no-win situation in an insanely tough division with an extreme talent gap between his Cardinals and everyone else in the NFCE.

This game was also Merlin Olsen’s CBS broadcast debut after 10+ years on NBC

Bugel’s first game against us. He had no chance in Arizona. No QB (Lomex retired because of injury), a division absolutely stacked with Washington and New York making their final runs of the 80’s and early 90’s and you had the emerging dynasty in Dallas and even Philly who was pretty good in the late 80’s up until about 97 when they bottomed out.

Bugel honestly tried the best he could considering those circumstances. Amazingly the Cardinals for all their issues never had an 0-8 division record.

Byner sure looked like he was touched before his knee was off the ground on the 2nd TD.

Maybe those days will be in our future with different ownership

Absolutely not. The Redskins died even before the mindless, sanctimonious name change. The NFL itself is a disgraceful shell of its former glory. Snyder destroyed the soul of that great team even before the safe spaces (“commanders”) came into being. True Redskins fans will always remember those great teams, but they will also admit that for all intents and purposes, there is no more team to speak of. It’s over. Fun while it lasted. At least now we can spend more Sundays doing things with our families. That’s the bright side.

I mostly agree with Maximos Wolfe, but maybe we can salvage something if we eradicate the Dan Snyder branding. Redwolves, Warriors, Braves, Hogs, Potomacs, any of the will do as they're reconcilable with our heritage. Also have to return to our classic uniforms. Anything short of those two things and there is absolutely no chance of a return to that Redskins-era feeling and atmosphere.

Will never happen and if it isn’t Redskins it’s insufferable. The NFL will do everything possible to prevent a reversion. That’s why I’ll never support it again.
