To find out what happened to another great RPG that deserved a sequel, watch my other video about Vagrant Story: ua-cam.com/video/MxyDxyAnwIs/v-deo.html
Why cant people let series die and rest in peace. It's really annoying just play new IPs. If a story is closed I think it's better for a series to die. Its really sad when games sellout and end up pushing out garbage. They can make another horror rpg and call it something else. No need to milk to name other then to sellout.
Great game but so disrespectful when people call it the original horror rpg. Sorry but parasite is the blueprint of horror rpgs. People arent giving the respect to parasite eve for that like they should be. Also you mentioned vagrant and not parasite eve. Even more disrespect cause vagrant wouldnt exist without parasite eve either cause they used parasite eves combat for that game.
I love this game series deeply, way more than FF. I still own all 3 games on PS2. This series is a rare gem and it makes me happy to know im not the only one who loves this series :")
@@riverpillow koudelka does crappy board style combat. That's great if you like that type of combat but it splits fans in half cause not everyone likes that kind of rpg
This appeared in my recommended vids after the Penny Blood kickstarter announcement. So I'm glad to you were wrong about this series never returning. Yes, it's not a direct sequel, but I'm sure there will be plenty of hidden references and familiar gameplay mechanics returning.
Shadow Hearts 2 was an unforgettable game the story, the music, the characters , the graphics . The graphics were way ahead of their time . I never heard of Shadow Hearts until I played the Mortal Combat Deception and Shadow Hearts was on the cover of the guide there was like a promotion in the back and I guess Sacnoth had a hand in publishing the Mortal combat game also so the logo was in the loading screens .I am so thankful that I did find it in the manual . RPG's are my favorite genre . I am learning to make games at the moment and I pray that I can make something half as good .
Shadow Hearts is such a gem of a franchise with such innovation and story telling. The combat wheel was one of the most interesting battle mechanics I've seen in a long time. I'm hoping this franchise gets rebirthed because it has so much potential.
You know the director of Shadow Hearts, Matsuzo Machida, in 2016 was interviewed by Italian website Geek Gamer. He said that FtNW is not Shadow Hearts 3; it would have been a prequel to the first game where you would get to play as Yuri's father and Kurando's father. Also, the first Shadow Hearts is and will always be my favorite game ever.
They are amazing games, but I agree with you the first is incredible! I hope we do get that Shadow Hearts 3 game one day! They have such an important place in my heart!
Glad to hear I am not the only one who loves the first SH more than the second. I realize that objectively, on a technical standpoint, the second one is better; however, I personally fell in love with these games because of the first. I feel the first had a more horror tone than the sequel, which seemed to tone down the horror a bit and started adding in more humor. I also enjoyed the character cast a little more in the first game as well, and actually personally prefer the simple character progression system of it as well. I understand the sequel allows the player more control over how the characters develop as they level up, but I really enjoyed not worrying about making those kinds of decisions in the first game. Every character played their own useful role in combat, and had predetermined abilities they learned at particular levels.
SH2 and Star Ocean Till the End of Time will be in my deepest heart. I also known no one playing SH2 and 3 in my childhood. Played alone all days all nights in summer break with the small tv on the fridge. Good to know im not the only one who love SH.
1 will always go down as one of the greatest surprises of my life. Loved the horror vibes and transformations. None of my friends really played it even though we all loved rpgs like it. And then the sequel was just as amazing. It's a tragedy these will never be remade.
Speaking of Kickstarter, apparently some old Media.Visions employees teamed up with some old Sacnoth/Nautalis guys, and are doing a double Kickstarter this month for Armed Fantasia, a spiritual successor to Wild Arms, and Penny Blood, a spiritual successor to Shadow Hearts. Just in case this hadn't blipped your radar, I figured I'd say something.
SH2 is one of my favourite games even now, I think that its mix of darkness, humor, puzzle, mystery, the Judgement Ring etc was really perfect. Too bad it had a very poor distribution: in my country, Italy, I really don't know a single person who even knows about this series!! (apart from my sister lol) So it was almost an indie from the very beginning...maybe they could have made a sequel if it was a bit more famous. At least I have my 3 SH games and can enjoy them whenever I want, and I really suggest that anyone who didn't play them just get an emulator (if you're not lucky enough to find some copies on the web) and play at least Covenant, because it's really a rare pearl and deserves every minute on it ❤️
I'm currently playing it right now. I'm on the second half at the moment. To be honest just with the first half of it I was already very satisfied. For me the 2nd disc is a bonus for us fans.
This game is like if Inuyascha and Final Fantasy had a child. I played the games backwards and I am currently thrilled by this games lore and characters. It’s really a hidden gem.
Koudelka's price is rising rapidly now. This is one of my favourite retro games sort of resident evil, if it was a table top game. Wish this would get a remake as a full on resie clone with real time combat As for shadow hearts 2, never finished it. To me the setting had changed from the unique at the time gothic horror of Koudelka to pretty much just another jrp. If prices hadn't crept up on this I'd probably pick it up again because sometimes when you come back to things you get a completely different experience out of them. Which brings me to 3 and why I'm here, i just dug this out of storage and was looking for a review to see if was worth a go. Anyhoo nice retrospective.
I loved the Shadow Hearts series. I remember renting it one day after I had finished FFX for like the 3rd time, looking for a new RPG on the PS2 and always wished someone would make a Gothic horror RPG. It was exactly what I was looking for and Covenant years later was even better. What I wouldn't give for a remaster of the series...
i couldn't fine Shadow hearts Covenant anywhere in stores i had to get that game on ebay at the time im so glad i did it's the best out of all of them it's one of the few games that had two discs on ps2 it was so under rated i hope they make a remaster trilogy on ps5 i miss playing it the most.
'It didn't sell very many copies and companies stopped giving people to make them', and 'probably not', in that order. It WAS super good, though! Too bad only like thirty people remember it.
I remember randomly picking up this game years ago and that was one of the best experiences since this series I absolutely loved. The fighting mechanics is the best with the hit wheel! The story of yuri is amazing and it keeps you in absolute aww with the spooky graphics and messed up humor 😂, hands down one of my top creepy game picks! Being obsessed with resident evil in it’s early days, silent hill and fatal frame, clock tower and castlevania series, it’s not as scary but the story is more interesting than some final fantasy titles! Wish there were more games like this! I’m sure there are but haven’t discovered them yet! Give me some titles of some classics, I’d love to try them out! I usually don’t emulate games if I can find them because it’s better to play the actual game and not some random rom that might fail. I have kept most of my old systems. Rare gems!
also my favorite part about Shadow hearts to the new world was the humor. The fact you had a kung fu Cat running the mob tore me up when I was younger. Still does.
it's so weird seeing a game I invested so much into be reviewed years later. loved the game, my dad knew how to find the gems. the 800 hours in the 1st and 2nd shadow hearts games were worth it
The way I found this series was watching a YTer who used to be known as Auxiliatrixie play Kingdom Hearts and I was new enough tot the franchise I didn't know what Shadow Hearts was and thought it might be related. I watched her play the first episode and it turns out, well of course, not Kingdom Hearts but I loved the story and characters anyways plus Trixie was awesome herself. I fell in love with the series and it's super saddening to see that Trixie has deleted her Shadow Hearts playhtroughs.
When it comes to titles of games I think you never know how they hit. Word of mouth is a big deal. I remember taking communications at the community college. I lived in San Antonio the 5th biggest metropolitan in 2010. And regardless of all the internet, and advantages to the city, due to the mass amount of mixed but primarily Hispanic cultures- word of mouth was one of the most important topics that was pushed to us. Crazy.

Xenogears was so boring. I don't understand how people praise that. I've heard people criticize it saying how they rushed like the last 1/3 of the game. Its noticable crappy ending of the game. By ending I mean like a whole third of the game too.

Making the good ending of the first shadow hearts the actual canon ending. It's why you don't see anything mentioned of yuri in the 3rd game. It's because he's off some where with alice enjoying their lives. And since he doesn't have that voice in his head anymore. Which is what showed him where to go. He was never warned of what was going on in the events of shadow hearts 3. So he's not around. Because if the bad ending happened in the 2nd one.
