About Zaner-Bloser Master Penman Michael Sull
Michael Sull is widely regarded as the individual credited with "bringing back" 19th century American penmanship from obscurity. Through his teaching, demonstrations, and publications, he has ushered in the renaissance of interest and popularity this field now enjoys. Mr. Sull is thought to be the last working penman and only certified Master Penman with direct ties to the golden age of the Zanerian College. His teacher, Master Penman Paul H. O'Hare, graduated from the Zanerian College in 1909, where he was taught by Charles Paxton Zaner and Elmer Ward Bloser.
That story made me cry.. 😢 and that work is beautiful
Wished I could Express My Self in this Beautiful Craft !
Thank you, Friend Sull. You do us (IAMPETH), Penmanship, and our predecessors all proud! You are a true gentleman and friend. It is a pleasure to see you at work while speaking so eloquently at the same time.
Wonderful! IAMPETH Master Penman Michael Sull is the right person/penman for this video. The preservation of the history & technique of the penmanship art form, both plain and artistic writing styles, owes much to Mike's efforts. I would highly recommend checking out his American Cursive penmanship instruction.
He's Michael Sull 😱 I didn't know. I was just watching because the writing is beautiful and just last night I was looking for his book.. Wooow!
Art.
How oh how does he put down so much ink from one dip?
some peoples brains must just be more advanced in order to do that it was really neat i wish i could do that.
Is it better to Use these penholders or the Straight penholders?
What year did the Zanerian College cease on-site instruction?
Is that possibly where the term zaney comes from, as with gaudy and gaudi.?
What Nib do you use here and What ink?
Master Penman Michael Sull’s favourite nib is Nikko G, though I can’t say for sure it is the one he is using in this video. The ink is McCaffery’s. The label on the ink bottle is partially visible just at the beginning of the video.
The nibs seems to be Vintage - Gillott 404 or Easterbrook 568 same type.
What nib is used in this demo?
Gillott 404 nib.
Does the college still exist?
No, it closed down in the 30s I believe, after Bloser's death.
So he is doing calligraphy and talking at the same time, and what he is saying is NOT the same as he writing...if this isn't a hallmark of a genius, tell me what is....
has anybody thought of applying calligraphy and graffiti?
Poor audio.
