TenZ is a problem for Sentinels. How much can he fix before 2024?

- TenZ was obviously not the only problem Sentinels had this season, but I needed to make this video to show evidence for why his individual play contributed. I am not targeting this guy without reason when critiquing Sentinels. In a team marred with role problems, lack of IGLing, and communication breakdowns, TenZ continued his VALORANT arc of having bright moments that outshine a mediocre whole.
Wish TenZ all the best with the struggles in his personal life, and hope he can become the player that his potential hints at.
1:06:16 he did actually smoke the bomb @sideshow VALORANT
My bad, yeah that's the UI delay. When we have a replay system it'll be much easier to be 100% in these moments. Thanks for the correction.

I can't believe this was only 9 months ago, what an insane transition by him
TenZ has got that "I need to carry my team and get a 4k every round" mindset and frankly he needed that for old SEN but this SEN is much more experienced and can trade each other and get their kills. I believe he knows this so he tries to reel himself back but that ends up making him too passive, I just think someone in the team needs to bring this up to him and condition him to find a balance between playing passive and aggressive as a duelist or even as a support character.
yeah i wonder if he has ever gotten individual coaching
Perfectly sums it sup
I think he realizes that since he's been playing with this team for a year now, especially back when he was perma duelist for them
@@soupytho Probably not since most teams he’s been on, if you’re underperforming you get cut immediately. I would guess that he was never in a system that catered to his improvement specifically.
He needs Sacy to turn him from an aim demon into a champion just like he did with Aspas.

I hope tenz and Sen can fix the synergy issues and start making plays that make sense again. Really good analysis as always sideshow
I think that's why they're trying to move him off duelist and get him to a more support role they got everything to set themselves up for success and find more synergy kept 4 guys added a real IGL and sentinel and Zekken proved he's a great duelist/entry player so hopefully they iron out the edges with Tenz and he becomes more of a team player with more depth to his gameplay
@@Willy_Gee u were right
@@Bustinss holy I was big brain for this lol I'm so happy I've followed and supported this team through the years made watching them lift that trophy so much more worth it
Maybe my favorite piece of valorant analysis content this year. The way you think about the game and the ideals vs. the realities, what could be going through players' minds, and how you overall present the information is I think the best out of what's available right now, even if I might be slightly more generous or more damning here or there. As its presented, its substantively useful to players that play more casually, on top of being just interesting for those invested in the pro scene, so that's sick too. I also just like the idea of dissecting a single player over many rounds, I think it's a good format for these sorts of things.
I think what's always struck me about TenZ as a player is the kind of utility vomit that he (and a few other Jetts) would do after a fight or kill (double smoke + dash + updraft away, where someone like Aspas might updraft alone to get out of the same angle), he would often press all of abilities at the same time as opposed to measuredly using what's necessary and keeping what isn't. He also would actively make fights harder by swinging his aim around wildly after dashing/updrafting even when it doesn't help his movement or allow him to clear extra angles, or jump around and peek before his OP was fully ready to fire (he often has the aim to make up for a lot of these habits, so you could maybe argue in favor of them for making him harder to hit and faster than usual, but still). He also just really likes pressing buttons it seems, he'll dash unnecessarily instead of letting it fizzle, pull his knife out and b-hop around for no reason while there are still threats around, etc. Seems like most of that made it into the video one way or another so that was neat to see.
It seems like exponentially more work, but the one thing that MIGHT be an improvement is maybe showing an ideal round that displays some key concept/decision-making from another player every once in awhile , e.g. watching a different Jett dash out of Hookah with proper protocols. But that seems like an absurd amount of work unless you already have a game in mind to pick from.
Also the most minor of corrections at 59:55, you can see he gets kill credit on his dash (1 of 2), so he popped dash right before he killed Xeppa. Still an easy argument to make that it wasn't activatable when he took the shot, so mostly a moot point, but ya know.
Good video almost-Dr. Eggman.
I see a lot of old F0rsaken in TenZ - an insanely cracked aimer whose duelist pool is limited to mostly Jett, sometimes Yoru and occasionally Neon, often chooses the wrong moments to be too passive/too aggressive, and has generally not been very good at surviving upon entry compared to the other duelist on their team (zekken for SEN, Jinggg for PRX pre-Something era). F0rsaken ended up shining more than he ever did on the duelist role when he was finally able to flex and be put into more impactful situations, leaving all the entry and distraction work to Something and Jinggg. If SEN are able to realize this too, I think they should really work on trying to develop TenZ into more of a flex in the same way PRX did so for F0rsaken.
While johnqt's addition isn't a 1:1 equivalent to PRX's situation when Something joined (the big thing being johnqt predominantly plays sentinels and Something became the secondary duelist), I do think that there's enough similarity between F0rsaken and TenZ's growth as players that should mean SEN can essentially replicate what PRX accomplished. Focusing on his strengths as listed by Sideshow in this video can really allow TenZ to capitalize on his true strengths (poor entry-spacing but insane aim, flashes, trading, and OP-ing), instead of having all that potential waste away simply because he fits the duelist role on paper.
johnqt's and zekken's flexibility and ability to adapt to most roles should give TenZ the room he needs to figure out what his agent pool should be and how he can best facilitate the team not as a Jett, but as a support player, where he's not going to be put in a playmaking/play-opening position. With Chamber now being more viable, the rising trend of putting insane aimers on other sentinel roles like KJ or Cypher (like Less, Alfajer, F0rsaken) that require a lot more passiveness and a lot less on proactive rotations/quick reactions, and even the likes of Yoru or Phoenix being regarded as increasingly viable (possibly even meta) options on niche maps, I'd say it's actually a pretty good meta for TenZ to know his weaknesses, test his limits, and properly try his hand at other agents.
the thought of TenZ becoming the f0rsaken of NA is really cool, it would fit him so well
Honestly one of the most based comments I've seen in a while. I'm no TenZ fanboy, but I've always wanted to see what his true ceiling could be. In the same way that I think Yay's rock-solid aim and methodical clearing style is actually more suited to site anchoring, TenZ's passive nature seems well-suited to a more trade-heavy role, and fortunately the scene has begun to recognize the impact of players beyond the flashy duelists of days gone by. You've already mentioned this, but I'd really like to see what he could become in the right hands.
I ain't reading all that but I'm happy for you, or sorry that happened

would like a part 2 of what tenz played like on the original sen lineup when they were dominating, were these issues still there, was that team just mechanically further along than the rest of the competition, was tenz just that much further ahead by himself, is it a confidence thing with him playing passive, maybe the pressure of needing to not throw rounds for them to win, etc. would be an interesting video to follow this one up
(I know it's been 4 months but) TenZ actually mentioned that one of the things contributing to 2021 Sen's success was that he was the second entry. Even though he was duelist-only, Sick or Shahz was actually the first entry, on Phoenix or Sage in Sick's case, or Jett in Shahz's case usually, and he was the second entry, so his passive duelist style, frequently op-ing instead of rifling even on attack, not having to be the first body in, etc., was actually rewarded instead of punished. Beyond that, the scene was still quite new. What was innovative and unique Jett tech with fluid updrafts, silent falls, etc. was uncommon in 2021, but as the rest of the world caught up, there wasn't any higher ceiling for him to innovate to in individual Jett play in regards to the movement/kit because Jett's kit is simply limited in terms of creativity.
Having now seen him play Omen, Kayo, Breach, etc. in the off-season, they're clearly a much better role for him in the modern Valorant world where you almost never run more than one duelist precisely because they put him back onto being the second entry, supporting the first entry (Zekken) as they fly in with a rifle in hand and enabling the creativity that initially put him in the conversations of best Jett/duelist in 2021.

Everything you said was very focused, very directed, and very purposeful, and contributed and added to the point you were trying to make. You also didn’t repeat yourself too much, and kept brining up new ideas and only reinforcing old ideas when it was relevant. I give you massive credit because there are only a few times I’ve ever been so impressed with the way someone’s taught me something, and you did an outstanding job, especially with a subject matter that can be dry and boring.
Here after he won master madrid
Going back to this video after TenZ' retirement and seeing his evolution a year later made me appreciate the amount of effort he put into becoming the player he is today.
Wild that everyone is revisiting this in mid 2024 and saying the egg looks dumb. SEN literally made so many changes with TenZ. He went from entry duelist to secondary entry and swapped to Omen, both bringing HUGE playstyle changes. At 1:08:30 he literally says give TenZ a role change. Egg never wrong
This could potentially be a very good content series, comparing how individual pros fell off or reached new heights or stayed consistent with changing metas, with time etc before and after
I think TenZ being on duelist of all roles highlights a problem with the Valorant scene at large
Everyone thinks the best aimers need to be on duelists... why did that thinking come about? In CS, was the best aimer in every team the entry fragger? Not always, often 2nd entry or even a lurker who finishes off a lot of 1vX's.
I think more super crisp aimers need to be okay with playing one of the other roles, that excel at later points of the rounds where great aim is maybe even more beneficial. Demon1 stands above most of the other godlike aimers for me purely because of his willingness to play the controllers.

also, fyi. I did finish the video and length was fine. Pretty sure most val viewers of your content are used to big podcast type length anyway, so forcing it to be actually short next time might not give much value if any. Imo, but ya
we need more people like you in valorant. there's too much content that promotes hero plays and people forget that this is a team game.
That happen in any sport... for example:
- Haaland right now... he's scoring because his team mates are insane. Like 95% of his goal are on first touch after a great pass.
- Or Lebron that only do flashy plays in the NBA because no one plays defense there (he always underperform in FIBA games).
- Or a more personal one... I used to swim competitively and one time in a relay, my teammate had the worst time of us 4, but everyone praised him because he was the one who pass the slowest swimmer of the other team. (In relay swimming you usually put your slower swimmer in the 3rd position).
People want emotions, not stats.
bro snuck in "no one plays defense in the nba" lol this is the best general defensive era; offense just is phenomenal rn in basketball. Take a mid tier player in today they'd probably more skilled than an older all star caliber player. @@ViXoZuDo
People care more about hero plays rather than team plays because hero plays are more entertaining
@@ViXoZuDoYeah no, Haaland, no matter how dependent he is on his team (which is a debate in itself), is still consistent. It only goes to show how synergistic he is with his team. LeBron has some of the best stats in the NBA, barring Jordan and some others. Even with the poor defense, it still translates to good stats and consistency for LeBron.
Stats still matter no matter which way you look at it. LeBron and Haaland are not in the positions they're in because of emotions, they've put up good numbers behind that as well. Sure, it could be because of great teammates/bad opponents or whatever, but the stats are still there. Neither of those have any correlation with your personal experience so I won't comment on that
@@Nomnomnom165 Haaland never had stats even close until he started playing for City... there is a reason no one cared about him until recent times. And all it's thanks to the whole team, not just him.
And guess what... people only care about goals, so a lot of people are blind when it comes to analice how good is a player vs how good is a team.
He's great doing 1 thing: first touch goals. Everything else he's not. He's just another above average player doing what he's good in the right team, but he's not even close to be great like Messi, Pele, Maradona, CR7, Ronaldinho or even Mbappe.
And LeBron stats are only good in the NBA... check his FIBA games. His stats are trash when rules are not bent for him and people actually play defense and referees do their job.
NBA: 27points/game
FIBA: 13points/game
NBA rules are bent for entertainment (scoring). That's the reason it's harder to play defense and a lot of team don't even do it. Basically those rules favor players like him and all the great defenders are not even remember by people.
I hope tenz watches this, amazing constructive criticism

this being recommended after his recent performance is wild yt
I really appreciate this analysis. Lots of people seem to pick an extreme position where TenZ is either the worst or best player in the world, but you have a very balanced objective view of what TenZ does well and what he can improve on. I was wondering what you think about TenZ's sage on Split?
I’m not sideshow but I think Tenz’s sage is just a bit repetitive, he doesn’t have any unique ideas, and with sage falling out of the pro meta I don’t think Tenz should play her
genuinely baiting aside, i would be envious as another player that youre giving him such good advice, good stuff, hope he can watch this with an open mind.
33:44 I think that was also the problem in his CS career. People said that he hated to take the initiative to do anything and even TenZ said that he likes to be told what to do and likes to be micromanaged by his IGL so the follower analogy is spot on. He was also a bad entryfragger compared to his field. I think he is better on going in second and third. Maybe he should change his agent select. He has cracked aim and somewhat passive playstyle which will be great on non duelist players.
I was also thinking the same coz during the CS time he had an amazing aim but he was not at par with the tier 1 teams in terms of gamesense maybe and he was benched quite early. During the initial period of valo utilities were not used quite extensively so these hero plays were considered good but the playstyles changed a lot since then
After watching this I just fell to my knees at walmart... My heart-shaped Tenz Glasses fell off.
Unironically, he could learn a lot from Zellsys to become better flex player. What a great resource to have on the bench tbh

Zekkens raze on bind now and sicks raze/pheonix back in the day. He really plays the second in reader role well because he’s good at throwing util and getting the trades and having his aim in those clutches would be nice but I think everyone just sees big aim and immediately thinks he needs to entry but I feel like tenz also get a lil overwhelmed in those situations with his Flicky aim
This looks more like a coaching level issue. How is basic team coordination so broken that people are regularly out of position so often if the set plays and calls are perfect? I think he does well on kayo, because he's the one using supportive utility and maybe that gets you higher igl priority
Let's take 55:30 for example. You can still high-low with a crouch, so why aren't they coordinating on the angle they want to fight on. I think it was completely unintentional that they happened upon a high-low setup and no one corrected their positioning when it was achieved
I'm going to be honest. This video is the best analysis video I've ever seen. I not only learned how TenZ could improve, I learned how I could improve myself. The concepts he goes over is mostly for a tier 1 player but I think any player not of that caliber could take several tips away from this video. I truly believe that TenZ is and will always be one of the best aimers and players to ever play the game. This video is by no means a degrading video and saying TenZ is bad. These are just aspects of his game that he should improve on to help his and his team's overall goal of being successful in the game's future. Love the video, very nice to see a deep analysis for that type of stuff. Would be nice to see such kind of video about either the opposite (one of the top entry Duelists in the world, so perhaps Derke/Aspas/Something/Demon1 who obviously have flaws aswell but way more good stuff to talk about) or something not directly related to this video/TenZ but like talking about some of the best IGLing from maybe Boaster or FNS. But capturing the IGLing is way harder since we don‘t know what’s actually being called from which player whatsoever, but I remember seeing a video talking about NRG/FNS applying the same defaulting pressure over 4 rounds against Loud on Pearl (I think this lead to a 4-0 start aswell up to that point) just to run the same default into a completely different split and playing with Loud‘s/Saadhaaks head completely. This isnt to say he's an ass player, or that he can't perform at a higher level. It's clear that he can with his raw talent alone, but since I've been saying for a while you cant build a team around someone who is very clearly unable to lead/think on the spot. He just makes content creator like plays (playing his own life, then hero plays for clips etc.) in professional settings and you're just wondering "why are you doing this in games where you're not even winning". Dont worry tho, someone will just pull up a clip from masters Reykjavik and show that it is indeed not the case.
This is such a genius video idea sideshow incredible content and I truly thank you ❤
about the dash thing i agree tenz uses it like a diamond asc jett. i have seen many aspas vods his dashes always help him
Great vid Sideshow! Thanks heaps I watched the whole vid and it was super informative! Cheers
This never occurred to me until you said "he's a follower not a leader" but TenZ is Scream. Scream was a horrible horrible duelist and also hated Split. I saw one game where he was 0-10 as entry Jet on Split. Liquid/KC finally started getting the hint and made him play sentinel. Obviously, KC had many more problems than agent roles, but it would be interesting to see TenZ on a more passive agent as an anchor. But I'm not sure how successful it would be, his utility usage is not exactly at a pro level.
Who’s here when sen won afrecca and tenz cooked
Bro is obsessed
59:51 I'm pretty sure he used dash right before being peeked and gets the kill which is why you see one of 2 kills needed for a refresh in the ui
Very good video! I watched the whole thing and it was very interesting. It was more educational than most valorant videos
I actually think this can be a great series, breaking down 'x-player'.
You see it in other sports like the NFL, with series' about QBs etc.
Well i guess he will become the 2nd entry from this year hope for s good year for him and the team
30:31
Bro, it is obvious that he is meant to clear the backside of the box not the elbow. He dashed with that in mind.
How can you say that Tenz didn't trade Zekken in elbow? Really?
Stop defending tenz
Rlly cool stuff egg! Excited for more of these.
Would love to see one of these for something like C9 and why they worked so well with low expectations or what makes derke so impactful on fnatic
17:03 this is pertaining to tenz' late rotate to help out zekken and sacy on a site. it looks like zekken puts up a smoke to slow the push onto site which also blocks any information he could have on a stairs lurk. Sentinels at this point don't have any information on stairs which I think justifies tenz's waryness around it. it's also unfortunate that at the same time, zekken is playing an agro angle after expecting such an aggressive push.
damn. can't imagine how much time you put into the prep work. very well consructed. please make this into a series with other pros as well
i'm a tenz fan, but dude is speaking facts. even tenz said he like to play trade.
Tbh I learned a lot of what you “should” be doing just from listening to you critique what was going wrong in these rounds. This is the first video of yours I’ve watched but I would say don’t shy away from long form content either. I feel like people who are here for valorant analysis are here for in depth looks at what’s going on and that requires a lot of time because valorant is a longer game and ten minute videos would struggle to really encapsulate the type of analysis people watch for. Anyway good vid
Maybe make a video on DSG and yay’s problems?
this video perfectly sums up what i was saying all year. he can occasionally win a round completely on his own and end up on the highlight reel but his overall impact as a jett player is so minimal you can see in real time how lost he looks with the operator on defence most of the time
All well criticized and analyzed, while remaining respectful of the players talents, and strengths, but not using them to excuse the weaknesses. Well done Josh. A shining example to the community on how to critique.
Super informative video, learnt a few things for my own gameplay from this 🙏
Getting flash-banged whenever sideshow opens a new tab is just like my valorant ranked games
This was a really good video. Hopefully we see more analysis of individual players
tenz was a great dualist when valorant was still young and fresh and but now things are different, tenz doesnt play so well as a dualist anymore. i think he might do good either playing more support roles or just retiring dualist altogether. as a fan of tenz i hate seeing his old gameplay compared to his new gameplay because he now he seems like he cant make a decision when it’s definitely not like that. idk what goes on in any players minds when theyre competing at that level but at the end of the day its still a competition.
tenz's positioning used to bother me so much especially on pearl when he plays deep spawn as a kayo and shedding light on this is important for sen. hopefully they are doing the same in helping him
Overall points are solid in the video, I think there are some minor inaccuracies where the blame gets put on Tenz when really it's not his responsibility-- for example setting up a high-low is almost entirely the responsibility of the player who is behind, because the player in front can't actually see where their teammate is and also is first in line so can't check mini map. The lotus example was largely just a communication issue imo, but also could have been a flash dodge play, we're not in comms so we don't know. This would obviously be more work but I think you could include clips of other pros in comparable situations as evidence to back up your points, e.g. how duelists like something or aspas are pathing on entry or how kangkang positions w op, that would be a big upgrade imo
Too used to solo queue lol. Hopefully JohnQT is better at getting the team to work together
Is it really all him though? Sure, he wasn't even in top 10 players list after the first masters events. But that season was rough because SEN refused to give up on the puggy style and not getting a proper coach and Shahzam really undervaluing the role, this champs season SEN as an org had issues with their roster and his fiance getting sick, there were many external factors that affected his performance too.
Sideshow did mention Sen having issues as a whole. And while I do agree that his fiance getting sick and even his own injury definitely had to have affected him, many of the points are things like gamesense and understanding ur role which IMO are deeper issues needing a fix
It's been a full year since Shazam and the coaching thing and basically two since they started sucking, if they don't perform soon even tenz can't be excused.
@@shadbishero yep that was 2022, and for 2023 if u kept up, the org messed up with Sykko and Deph. Like I am not saying that hes better than the current jetts and flex players at all, but I am just saying that its not 100% his own fault behind the bad SEN runs
@@zenaorsomething Yes, like even in my OP I said that he isnt even in top 10 anymore so definitely not the perfect pro player, but not really a fan of movie length videos of criticizing his gameplay for his performance for this year because the dude had a lot of personal issues this year.
I think anyone who has been watching TenZ games without rosy goggles has noticed this about his playing. He has maps where he looks good, then Maps where he just has zero impact. But this analysis is really good because it demonstrates exactly where he is lacking impact and they are some pretty big holes. I think TenZ has an identity problem because he found so much success early on in this game because of superior Aim, he always thought he was a duelist. But as yhe meta evolved we now see that to be a duelist you need to have way more skills than just raw aim, and he hasnt really grown into that. So now his only options are to either get good at that, or just take a back seat and play agents that suit his passive more careful style.
Make one of these for Scream I beg
29:45 - No. TenZ and Zekken taking site on their own involves unnecessary risk, but Sacy massively overheating is what brought them down. He should have waited.
I wanted to ask, I've heard you say before that FNS is the best at calling his playstyle in the world, and I remember hearing people saying similar even as far back as the old EnvyUs core. Could you please explain what analysts mean when they say that, and what about the way his teams play/the way he calls which makes that true?
they have been saying this about fns since back on cs go, i am really curious to know as well, but i think a video like that would require a lot of coms not just pov and minimap.
great video I watched the whole thing keep it up
