Don't hold yourself to 20 minutes. That can start to get daunting. It is far better to meditate for 5 minutes, or even 1 minute, than nothing at all that day. Just start meditating everyday. If you want to sit longer once you started, do it!
This is the secret to starting any habit. Small steps every day.

    How to meditate...
Sit up straight however or wherever you like (don't slouch as you get tired)
    Calm steady breathes
    Eyes closed
Keep a clear mind (don't think of thought stories)
If a thought pops in your head, notice it. Let it go/disappear, bring awareness to breathing or touch senses to help let go of the thought stories but remain still.

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was with a yogi in a relationship for 4 years. She was not only my partner but my teacher. The first couple of years I thought most of what she had been saying was nonsense. She was at the point of a 7 year journey. Couple years in I began my own. She planted the seed , never forced. I woke one morning looking in the mirror and had an emotional breakdown. All of a sudden everything she had planted started to sprout. That was about 2 years into our relationship. For the past couple of years I have lived in the toughest time of my life however the calmest. Clarity was a new and overwhelming experience. Past few months I slowly started to slip and as of late I have started to recollect myself. Past few weeks I have felt a calling to meditation. I searched and found your video. I just practiced for the first time what you said and it’s overwhelming to say the least. I had some moments fighting the clouds. There was a distant dog barking which made it difficult.
I set my timer for 21 mins to give me a minute to adjust , relax best I could and focus on my breathing. Upon completion of the the 21 min I started to get lost in these waves of green, purple and orange clusters or waves of warm light. Not focusing on them per say but feeling like I was lost in the light and a part of it. The tail end I slipped once more because of the distant barking dog sending me back down in the clouds of thought of how long is this gonna take. It felt like only about 5 mins. When I did my timer went off and spooked me a bit. It was a somewhat comforting yet creepy feeling for lack of better words. I just want to thank you again because I am currently feeling a weird boost in self awareness at the present moment even hearing things outside in a clarity and distance I’ve never noticed before. And a peace. I will not pressure myself however once it passes because I know it’s a daily practice in this journey. Everything is temporary and that is ok. I look forward to continuing day 2 in my new battle / commitment tomorrow and every day after. Thank you

This video is missing a key advice for beginners and that's *focus on your breathing.* When people say focus on nothing, well that's literally impossible, and that is a big reason why a lot of people struggle with staying calm. So a trick is you have to give your brain something to occupy itself with by focusing on something that is happening in the present moment. This could be calm music, a fan, humming, or the other thing that you can't control and is always happening: breathing. You are always breathing, every moment of every second, so bring your attention out of your mind, and to the breath.
If you try to focus on this idea of *literally nothing* you will start saying in your head "I need to focus on nothing. Nothiiiiing. Focuuuss", which is thinking about something...which means you already defeated yourself, that's just not how the brain works.
Whenever you start drifting in thoughts and you catch yourself, just bring your attention back to breathing, hell, count your breaths if you have to. Do not say in your head "oh shoot i need to focus on nothing, darn it!........FOCUSSSSSS" lmao

MOStein I think focusing on the breath itself is a constraint. You may be carried away by that thought of the breath, thinking about the air coming out of the lungs, the lungs themselves, the heartbeats, then there you go uncontrolled again and taken away.

I'mma build myself up again.

I love this. Great, simple advice. There's one caveat though: I'd maybe lighten the statement (I'm paraphrasing) "if you're not going to do this every day, without fail, don't start". That's going to create self pressure that's going to set some personality types up for failure. The last thing you want is self guilt for not following through, which some people will feel when they don't do it. Just go easy on yourself, and if you miss a day or two, it's not the end of the world.

You had some really helpful points in this video. I definitely noticed some aggression in some of the comments you made. Almost like fitness gurus telling someone who’s overweight that they have no excuse for being overweight. “If you’re not going to do it every single day don’t do it.” Comments like that made me feel like I’m joining a pyramid scheme and made me want to run from the idea of meditating.

Actualized.org Hey Leo, quick question for you. I recently started doing meditation again after watching this video. I would like to watch more of your videos to sort of reinforce my meditation/allow me to better reap the rewards of meditation, but I find myself overwhelmed by the amount of videos/lengthy videos on the channel. Do you recommend a specific order that I should watch them in, or should I just follow the idea of one video a day? Thanks!

Robert Moore go to his channel. click the search logo next to about. type in meditation. watch all the videos taking notes on a separate sheet for each video. look over all the notes and organize and prioritize them based on topics. i recommend watching 'benefits of meditation', then 'mindfulness meditation', then 'how to meditate', then 'how to meditate deeper'. but it probably would work in a different order for you depending on where you're at. I say write the important information down because you can have a tendency to forget important steps and watching a 30 minute video numerous times can be prevented. hope this helped

My brain is so fucked I can't even focus on what he's saying. I try and listen but after a minute or so I realize I'm thinking about something completely unrelated and have to go back and rewind. This happens with everything. Reading a book, watching tv, having a conversation, working, doesn't matter. It's been like this for as long as I can remember and am not sure what the cause is. I am sure that learning to meditate will help but should I seek some professional help for this?

You are perfectly normal. Don't believe in these losers. It is normal for you to wander. When you are inteligent that is the norm. You just need to learn how to focus better. But wandering means you have many thoughts, many ideas, many energy, that is being normal. Meditation is not this BS, Meditation can be just focus on your life, being happy with what you have, contemplating why you should be happy.... medidation is not about "thinking about nothing"....

You did lose me at the point where you said 'Meditation needs to be done daily'. Yeah, I get it, but this makes one go to the pitfall of "I didn't meditate today -> no point then -> fuck this." I think the common misconception of developing a habit is a strict regime. No, it's actually starting again after your given up over and over again. 'Okay, I failed today, I'm gonna try next time tomorrow. And so, by doing that you don't beat yourself up but eventually develop a habit. It's pretty much how I developed a habit of meditating. I still skip some days, but so what? If I eventually do it more and more often, that's the goal. The goal is peace not beating oneself up, isn't it?

    1) If you are just starting out, try a little bit at first. Can't do 20 mins? Do 15. Can't do 15? do 10. 5. hell, even one minute is better than zero. (The human mind puts up a lot of resistance towards new habits. so start slow and try to hit that minimum of 20 mins.)
    2) It might be difficult to do this everyday. And I agree with him that doing it everyday is very important.
But if you find yourself not doing it because the commitment of everyday seems overwhelming, try doing 3 days a week minimum and then move on from there.
According to research: Practicing meditation a minimum of 20 mins a day, a minimum of 3 days a week for 8 weeks is enough for the benefits to start showing in many individuals.
But if you want the max benefits, what this man said: everyday

Oldkidsjonge similar to days 1-4, when I start my meditation almost immediately I can tell how crazy my mind is running and all of the thoughts running wild until I learn to observe them rather then follow them. The more you detach from your thoughts they just fizzle away on their own. Just let go, let go of your thoughts and disassociate with them. Very relaxing and peaceful, im going to keep going!

Thank you for sharing the importance of sitting straight up during meditation. When meditating, I would sit straight up with no support but then find myself later slouching which would really, really relax me and cause me to become sleepy. I become mentally open, clear and relaxed which is the goal but also sleepy like a baby. Lol! Chakra layout meditation puts me to sleep half of the time as well so I typically do that at night before bed. Today, I was trying to figure out how I could meditate without putting myself to sleep and the universe guided me here. Thank you again for sharing your experience and knowledge.

What I like about it is it shows in a short video how the mind wanders around and how to just bring it back without frustration. After watching your video I'm even more convinced to keep doing that. Leo, you have thouroughly coverred every aspect of meditation.
I describe the biggest benefit to my understanding is this actual connection with myself. To be with myself. Nothing else exists.
After 6 months of meditation, I enterred into a romantic relationship....
Eventually, I stopped meditating, next thing you know, I abandoned my self. my purpose and direction in life...
Result? End of my relationship ended.
What have I learned from this?
Stay connected (with self) through mediatation.
    Thanks for this video.

+Emma Harrop That's good, Emma! Building up saliva is an indication that your energy is flowing properly. In the old days they called that "elixer" - and its good for you. Swallow on the exhale. Around the time you generate saliva, you might also notice a pleasant heat or energy sensation, mostly in your hands, upper arms, and likely feet and calves. All this is indication of progress, so keep going!

@@petrsokol588 yes! it has helped A LOT and it's totally worth it. But let me be honest for a sec: I still get depressed sometimes and other heavy mental issues. It's not a magical solution and it works best in the long term, it's a slow process. If I didn't meditate on a daily basis I would be much much worse. This year I have been meditating for four years in a row :-O Just missed one single day last year and that's it. And if I have to compare, I can definitely say I'm mentally getting better each year.

I paused the video to try it, I played some nature sounds and suddenly a thought through other though came to my mind. I'm feeling lightweight in just 20 minutes, I can't imagine what meditation can do in my live from now on.

Wonderful video Leo, but I would have to say you got one thing very wrong: after my first 20 minutes of meditation I feel WAY better. It is totally possible to have instant positive effects. Thank you for this new tool :)
I knew I had to start meditating when my brain felt so fried, I am always so anxious and I’m literally addicted to the internet, I’m always listening to UA-cam or something in the background. I think this happened last year when I was stuck in a really bad job to escape the present moment but now I am ready to get back into my body and mind again.
I feel like I had a great rest but not my body but my mind. I was procrastinating on starting this for quite a while... but I finally am going try the 30 day challenge and I’m certain this will help me a lot.

At first, I admit I wasn't convinced at first about this video but you made me see that what you say it's true. I've seen several vids about meditation but you don't need courses or books or that much stuff. Just sitting, watching your posture and focusing on breathing, allowing the thoughts to roam free but training our minds to focus again. That's something that I've tried endlessly and it's always scattered. I'm afraid I lack that constant will but this is something long overdue. At last, now I now my first 2y will be hell! Thanks for the thumbs up! *laughing* Anyway, I definitely will watch the self-esteem vid too. Great job in simplifying meditation! :)

Of course it's a chair. Just in the same way that I am me. We label and conceptualize things because we are human and that is an easy way to store information.

The people of the Indus river valley (present day India) we're the first to have sculptures of people practicing yoga, they also passed on oral traditions still around in India to this day that speak of yoga.

I have pretty much everything I wanted in my life, a good job, a university exam, engaged with the love of my life, and good friends (I am 25). But I feel like I need more calmness in my life. I am never really pleased and I want to feel more greatful for the things I have, but also find the strengh to believe that I can do much more in life. My emotions and bad thoughts sometimes stop me from achieving things, and I think that meditation is the key to true hapiness and achievements. I want to be better to control my emotions, and have a better self-esteem. I think highly of myself sometimes but really bad other times, which is because of my ego. Instead, I want to challenge myself more and not think about if I will fail or not. And accepting failures.
Thank you again, and greetings from Sweden!

+Actualized.org Hey Leo, I really want to start meditating eyery day and make it an habit but i have this issue that's stopping me, every time i'm relaxed and ready to start i close my eyes but my eyes won't stop moving it feels like instinct reaction of my habit, i play lots of video games after while you get this tendency to make split second decisions and focus on all things on screen at once, and that's root of my eye movement well that's my conclusion anyway.. i tried not to think about it and just go trough with it but it didn't help, its really distracting and i was wondering could you give me advice on how to perhaps overcome this ''instinct''? i hope you reply. cheers :)

+Fenix Cro I think that's just your brain and your senses being in hyperactive mode cause of the huge amount of stimulation in the video games, so you're not really being relaxed though you said so. A simple suggestion: Play less, take breaks, just learn to meditate - and don't expect huge immediate results. You won't overcome that problem in a minute or one day but eventually you will. Be patient. All the best, buddy!

The consistency of meditation is absolutely true, do it daily. But when I stopped for one year and came back to it, it was totally easier for me to get to the process and make it simple. Like if you quit work out and come back you lose your gains but the results are coming faster than if you'd do it for the first time because of muscle memory, this also applies for meditation.

a peasant decided to become enlightened. there were two gurus living on opposite sides of the village. the peasant went to the first one and asked "how do i become enlightened?" and the guru said "oh, that's simple; all you have to do is stare in the mirror for an hour a day asking yourself 'who am I?' ". the peasant thought to himself "it cant be that simple, this guru is fucking with me" and he went to the guru on the other end of the village and asked him the same question. the second guru said "the path is really hard and it is not for everyone. first you have to prove to me that you are worthy. you have to do my chores until it will be clear to me that you are ready". the peasant really wanted to become wise and enlightened and he agreed. after two years of doing guru's chores the guru says to the peasant "you have proven to me that you are the right person to become wise and enlightened. now you have to stare into a mirror for an hour a day asking yourself 'who am I?' "

Hey there, i've been struggling with myself for the last year. I've been unhappy most of the time because of love, stress and feeling alone mainly even tho i have lots of people around me. What makes me sad the most is the fact that my life the way i live it should be fun but for some strange reason i can't get enjoyment out of it. I can't seem to stop my negative thinking processes or stop thinking about things at all, i feel restless in my mind. For the last few months i've been using drugs to calm down or 'have fun'. And as you said in your video it's a very rollercoaster like feeling, with more downs than ups. I can recognize myself in alot of things you say in your video aswell.
I just tryed the 20 minutes, it was diffecult but i managed to calm a few seconds a few times in my mind. Mainly i struggled sitting still and my back was killing me, so unintentionnally i was focussing on that alot. Do i need to train/ stretch my muscles aside from the 20 minutes meditation? or does it get easer by just doing the 20 minutes every day?
Thank you for this explanation because it's really nice knowing that you cannot fail if you just keep the habit going, that really gives me some self-assurance. I hope this will very slowly but surely give my mind some peace.

      Hey pal!
I didnt read all of your text but glimpsed at the the Part with the backproblem. I'm trying to meditate for a while now and since 2-3 weeks i'm just training every day to sit still and straight for 20 minutes. At first my back killed me too, but the muscles adaped pretty fast. Just keep going and try to get the form right from the start. dont rush something that your body cant keep up yet. Stretching the back isn't so suitable, think more about the hip or legmuscles. You could stretch some of your muslce if you've got a specific Problem. (e.g you sit all day long and you cant get a straight back in a relaxed state, because some of your muscles are shortened and pull your bones/hip in an unhealthy position) if you want to know more about some specific thing about anatomy/posture, pm me. Otherwise good luck

I just wanted to say thank you! For one second I imagined myself after 10 years doing some kind of motivational coaching starting like :" So i got this friend, Leo, he told me : MEDITATION is the key, my friend. And puff mindfulness and knowledge xD Great video and easy to understand exactly what you need to do, i dont really like the 30 day challenge because its kinda stupid from my point of view. Meditation really helps everyone, i struggle with anxiety and a lot of negative thoughts and meditation helps me right now, im doing it so that it becomes a part of me, why won't people do it for every day of their entire lives? It makes you better now and it will help you be more and more throughout your own story and life so why not? You said in the video the same thing and i think its the correct one.

I meditated 30 minutes a day for about three months at a point in my life and I have never been so at peace, in fact I was so at peace that I was starting to fear it.
Time started to fly by so fast that I felt I needed to rebel by searching for the pain that lead me to start meditating.
My point is that it's easy to fear the positive changes if anger and negativity is all you ever knew.
Meditation can become overwhelming. Be aware of that when you start so that you can handle it when it comes.

As beneficial as it is, meditation seems like its scary on a subconscious level. It seems that my mind prefers being the unconscious drunk monkey and strongly resists slowing down. Also, when I advocate that other people try it, they almost never do. I'm glad I started, but I'm curious why it is so easy to avoid meditation. Any advice from either leo or the original commentor on getting past this discomfort? I suck at using google plus and linking people btw

THIS. Is the BEST video on Meditation. You just covered EVERYTHING that I just paid the big bucks to learn (and still came away insecure about what/how to do Transcendental Meditation). My takeaway is that I did learn everything there is to learn and it is just okay to have a persistent drunk monkey mind. It's what it is. So that's great. I didn't waste my money. But if I'd found this first, I could have saved the money. That's the message to everyone who comes across this, that he really does cover everything in here that you need to get going on TM. (and p.s. to someone who criticized this for not telling us to focus on breathing--that really is just a distraction--if it helps you, fine, but it's not a big deal, it really isn't). And he gives some extremely important tips that I didn't get (or maybe wasn't ready to hear) in the class I paid for. Honestly I kept falling asleep in class, especially during the Maharishi guy videos. Totally zoned out into a coma. So I number one, appreciate realizing that I have signed up for a long-term comittment (hopefully not 2 years--but that's what i said when i read that it takes at least two years to overcome the grief over the death of a very close loved one--and it was every minute of two years and then some--so I'm okay with this, I get it that you do get better, but looking back you see that you have truly been working and growing for 2 years) and then, oh THEN, free at last, free at last, Thank God Almighty, free at last! This also includes the incentives of why it is worth to persevere at something i totally suck at right now. I really do want that pay-off, and I really do believe it's there. And i want to squeeze every last worthwhile mortal experience out of this life that I can while I'm here. You know, making it count. Time is going to pass anyways, I'm at the point where my body is aging, and you can just totally curl up into a little arthritic ball and quit moving. Or............... transcend. Yep, that's the plan............... TRANSCEND.................thanks for this..........

26 days into at least a 20 minute meditation tryout. Many benefits. 1 ) When I see someone I realize I know ,now I know how I know them . 2) the other day I was at the gas station and reached for my credit card. It was not where it usually sits in my wallet. I used my back- up card and immediately remembered where I had placed the card. When I got home I went into the laundry basket and got the card from a breast pocket in my tee shirt.3) generally a better feeling of being at peace with myself.
