In 1974 there was really no way to see these acts other than going to shows…except for late night shows like midnight special, in concert etc. i was 14 years old and tuned in one night and THIS concert was on. I had no idea who these guys were but it blew my mind. Made me a bowie FANATIC. I learned EVERYTHING. It also was the catalyst for me learning to play guitar…and Mick Ronson to this day is my all time favorite guitarist. His body of work is astounding. Not enough levels of ‘like’ for this one!

This was in his glam pre cocaine days. The mime was intentional, as he learnt under UK mime artist Lindsay Kemp and also toured with him in a mime play set to music written at the time of his debut album. You must listen to the title track from the Aladdin Sane album.
You really should check out “Beside Bowie” a documentary about Mick Ronson, It will fill in a lot of gaps. Ronson Is easily the most underrated guitarist of the era. The entire Man Who Sold the world album is worth a spin, Bowie at his heaviest!

Yes, I'm 67 and also had the bootleg at the time. A committed Bowie fan since pre-Hunky Dory. When he left us, I cried and got a tattoo: his initial D, followed by the Aladdin Sane flash (correct colors), followed by his initial B, all sandwiched between his birthdate on top (01.08.1947) and his death date on the bottom (01.10. 2016). Mick Ronson, a true musical genius. He played guitar and piano, he also did string and brass arrangements and was a producer. Check out the album Transformer, by Lou Reed, produced by Ronson and Bowie. You'll probably have heard Walk On the Wild Side, but the entire album is worth a listen. Together with The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust one on the defining albums of the early seventies. But both Reed and Bowie, great songwriters as they were, were made even better by Ronson's magic. He is underrated perhaps by the general public, but not by those who know.
Mick Ronson one the all time great guitarists. He had classical training and was also an amazing producer and arranger who worked with many artists on landmark albums. By all accounts Ronson was a very nice guy, liked by all, very sad when he passed after a long illness, too young. He didn't get a lot of credit for many things he did on records and songs during his time with Bowie in the early 70s.

All the songs from this Concert Film are amazing! Try the live "Ziggy Stardust" and "Moonage Daydream". At times, Bowie really seems to be a space alien, who is playing at being a human, being dangerous and seductive, caught up in the seduction of being human. And Mick Ronson is a GREAT guitarist. I love when he "fights" the Bass Player, suggesting the growing conflict within Ziggy's Alien band (The Spiders from Mars). The final song in the Film, "Rock and Roll Suicide" is particularly shocking because it's the last time Bowie ever performed as "Ziggy", and he announces the end without warning the "Spiders".
Dude, if you wanna hear what I think is Bowie’s best live album you have to listen to David Live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia. UA-cam has the complete (double) album with added songs that were performed but wouldn’t fit on the album. If you can’t react to it that’s cool. Do it on your own time just so you can hear it. It was recorded in 1974 . North American part of the tour that’s on video now. Somewhere between that show and Philadelphia he changed into “TheThin White Duke”. The concert includes songs from 3 previous albums, Ziggy, Alladin Sane, and Diamond Dogs. There’s a shit load of lead guitar including a lead duel with the saxophone player. Soo I hope get a chance, give it a listen. By the way, the concert sold out before I could get tickets. I was 17. Did see him two times few years later. In the mean time, Rock and Roll Suicide, live in Japan.🥹 please 🖖🍻

I keep forgetting how awesome this part of the show is! Bowie did several costume changes throughout that's where he went during the solo. You should definitely check out the whole show! "Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture" It was the last show of Ziggy & he announced that it "would be the last show we'll ever do" His bandmates, except for Mick Ronson & his manager didn't know he was gonna say that so pretty much everyone got fired after this show lol it's a piece of Rock History. I saw this at the movie theater in Austin when it was released in 1983. Stunning on that giant screen. I saw Bowie on his ‘Let’s Dance’ Serious Moonlight Tour too that summer. Totally different. Woodmansey, Bolder, and Ronson were The Spiders From Mars, Bowie’s classic band. Ronson was the leader, of course, an absolutely brilliant guitar player, pianist, arranger, scorer,… I went to see him play with Ian Hunter at a cowboy bar in the Northside of Fort Worth about 1990, a very relaxed gig where they stood around talking afterwards, and I was so glad I went. Bowie was cold, abandoned people who helped him, cut all ties, but he regretted doing that to Ronson, who was so trusting, such a good person. He did bring him onstage to play with him at Live Aid, but wouldn’t you?
A friend was at this concert, the final Ziggy Stardust performance. Bowie famously didn't tell me band who were shocked by his announcement at the end of the concert. I love the drumming here.

Listen to the full albums, man who sold the world, ESPECIALLY the track, All the Madmen, Bowie wrote about his brother Terry who suffered with his mental health and sadly took his own life in the 80s. Also Listen to the album space oddity,,,Bowie did in fact study mime in the 60s and often included it in his live performances. This concert is iconic and legendary, check out Rock'n Roll Suicide, just before he starts singing he addresses the audience with a speech where he says goodbye to the tour and unexpectedly breaks up with his band The Spiders from Mars, surprising everyone. Yeah, I love Bowie but I think that was really bad form. Apparently even the band didn't know that was the end. I did read an article many years ago which said Ronson may have been in on it.
I'd definitely suggest checking out the album cut, it's incredible. Bowie has always been as much a performer as a musician. And he studied mime and was quite proficient with it. Love him!
Far prefer the album version, but seeing David perform is always a joy. For years I couldn't work out why he looked so strange, then I realised it was his lack of eyebrows for most of the 70s.

I saw Bowie in the 1990 tour, which was like a Changes / Greatest Hits tour, he was amazing! Ryko had just reissued his entire catalog that year.
Aladdin sane is also a great album by Bowie. Especially the song “Watch that Man”.
