    I'm down here in FL. Got the taters, onions, collards and stuff planted. The potatoes froze back and came back up again. The collards weren't affected at all and the chickens buried almost all of my onions and I can't find them, LOL. I've been doing Back to Eden. They tilled up the mulch and ate half of my collards, all of my tomatoes and some of my broccoli. Replanted some stuff and it's doing great!

    When I saw the first shot of your veggie garden, I knew the design was perfect for mine! I'm restoring an 18th century walled garden in England. Its been neglected over past hundred years or so and it's a mass of weeds and decaying trees. It's primary use seems to have been a place to dump trash - I'm unearthing all kinds of broken pottery and glass. Your design fits in very nicely with my idea of how a vegetable garden should look. Thank you very much for all your hard work - it's going to be replicated in Spring over here!

    I have another idea to hold down weeds and hold in moisture, use 4-6 in layer of wood chips, the plants will love it, you just have to rake the chips once a year to prevent composting of the wood chips themselves.

    Your garden looks great, despite the frost you encountered but I would advise NOT cutting the WHOLE heads of lettuce at a time. ONLY cut off what will be consumed for that meal. That's the same with just about ANY plant, unless harvesting for canning for winter.

    When do you plant purple hull peas in North Texas

    • @bmarsh011
      @bmarsh011  6 років тому

      Ken Stewart For early plantings, sow seeds in the garden four weeks after the last average frost date. Succession crops can be sowed every two weeks. Excellent choice for late summer planting. Once the tomatoes and have finished up, use the garden space for purple hull peas for an early fall crop. Purple hull peas are a warm weather annual that can’t take frost, so timing is essential for later crops.

    Nice garden but most people seem to realize that planting your own garden isnt cheaper than buying because you need fertilizer & water plus effort & time & loss some plants will die on you

    • @TheRenpeg
      @TheRenpeg 9 років тому +4

      Most people that have gardens do it for the joy of gardening. The fruit,vegetables,tubers berries are a bonus. As for cost it depend how long you have had your garden as well as the set up and plants you grow. The first year will always cost the most. But after that you dont have to buy fertilizers, water, mulch. Yes there is still your time but that evens out with the time to go to the store.

      @torbjorngabrielsen1208 9 років тому +4

      Dusty G. and you save more money if you make your own compost buy using leftovers and garden waste. if you make a warm compost the bacteria kills most of the unwanted seeds in the process of decomposing

    • @opcn18
      @opcn18 8 років тому +1

      +Torbjorn gabrielsen It's exceptionally rare for someone to grow a garden for cheaper than they could buy it if they were looking out for good deals and buying in season. Compost alone doesn't make your soil very fertile, nor do worm castings or most things you can produce on your own )outside of your own humanure). Animal manure can do the trick, but it's exceptionally difficult to grow enough food to raise animals on a field if you aren't fertilizing it.

      ApocalypticStorms, my father in law told me that gardening is not for everyone. A garden will be cost effective if you do it right. There's loads of info that proves that. Experienced gardeners all say, start small. I say as small as the size of a bathtub will get you loads of tomatoes and cucumbers and some carrots, beets, spinach, or whatever you like.
