I'm lucky enough that mother sang this song to me as a child. I didn't know what it was called but my sister and I asked her to sing "the horse song" because it reminded us of medieval horses galloping.
Agreed with you Sarah Papion, The song sounds like a galloping horse aswell to me-tho I never had songs sung to me when I was a child.
My mum sang this song to me too growing up and forever reminds me of her doing so
Yes, this song reminds me of a mediaeval time, where a knight in horse is galloping through the streets, people working in farms at the country side, a bustling market where people trade goods and on top of the hill there's a big castel, this is how i imagine the song would be..
So I use this song every year to remember what herbs I put in my turkey for thanksgiving.
She sings it with such confidence as she was created for this purpose. Perfection!
Cloudy Fox HKN That means she is not actually sining live, her voice is pre recorded and she is simply moving her lips in sync with the recorded voice.
This was lip sync or live however I like this very much she sang this song perfectly
@@DiamondWhite91 you’re right. This could be just a model paid to lip sync. As a matter of fact if she was lip syncing her own voice she would have done a better job as she was so far off she wasn’t even singing along. At the end she was slightly ashamed but only slightly, as she obviously is an actress/model who is doing what she was paid to do lip synch, and the not so great job she did shows she didn’t respect the whole process.
Charles Tarr lol No, that is not what I am saying at all. She is the actual singer. She’s just not good at lip synching. She probably can’t hear the background sound clearly.
Props to the flute guy who doesn't seem to breathe ever
@@FlickanIDetKroktaRummet OH MY... ... you ruined the perfect moment of the beauty with this comment.
The two last verses are usually omitted, but they are actually the whole beautiful point of the song.
Why asking all these things that just can't be done?
Because, if truly in love you must prove it by being willing to try.
Even impossible demands, as such are an essence of love itself.
- - -
If you say that you can't, then I shall reply
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Oh, Let me know that at least you will try
Or you'll never be a true love of mine
Love imposes impossible tasks
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
But none more than any heart would ask
I must know you're a true love of mine
That is an interesting interpretation but the intent of the song seems to show that the person asked to do the tasks will never be a true love.In other words that the person asked to do such impossible tasks have lost their chance
@@hillelbarer3974
So, when our true love asks me for the impossible I must think "Is this a sign that she need me to prove that I love her (too) beyond the boundaries of the possible?"
Or "Does this mean that she does not love me and want to show that by asking me to do something which will lead to my failure?".
Complex, complicated and with elements of the impossible. Thank you for your thoughts.
I have been to Scarborough for a school trip at primary and I still remember the teachers making the whole year group sing this song at the place we were saying. It was magical and I still remeber it 4 years later (I was in year six at the time)
I've just uploaded a video on the history of Scarborough Fair which will answer many common questions! The video includes over 30 traditional recordings of variants of the ballad, and discusses the actual origin of the famous melody.

Jealous! Most of our field trips at school were to the Telus World of Science.
It must of been so cool!
Hayley Westenra, beautiful woman, beautiful voice singing the most beautiful song in the world!
It sounds so magical...
I've never thought I would like a music like this, but her voice is pure pleasure. It is so calming and it feels like a perfect companion for The Witcher atmosphere.

I have never heard such a beautiful voice in my 75 years of life. Thank you Hayley.
How can a human give dislike on such a wonderful musical performance. This beautiful girl with the amazing voice singing by the castle is just epic, just taken out of the most wonderful adventure! They are really good singers, Celtic Sisters, and good performers! Hayley Westenra hasone of the best voices ever!
I was wondering the same thing when I noticed there are over a thousand dislikes. Maybe they have a hearing problem. :)
One of the most beautiful live performances I’ve ever heard, her intonation is unreal!
Its crazy to think this song is about 400 years old and is still a hit to this day.
the song is beautiful. I am not surprised that she is so old. We in Bosnia sing traditional songs, also timeless, the beautiful Bosnian Sevdah. Very sad, some call them Bosnian blues.
I Heard This Fantasy in What Do You Do At The End Of The World ?? Are You Busy ?? Will You Save Us ?? Or Called SukaSuka Episode One Opening 😖
This is unreal. Her voice is perfect, goosebumps, can’t believe I’ve just found this. Hauntingly beautiful, stunning women, angelic. Quality. One video I’ll return to for sure. What’s weirdly ironic is there’s Americans/Canadians who think Scarborough is a reference to Ontario. Yet everyone from England can relate to this bard. America wasn’t even thought of then. Scarborough is a seaside town in England… As someone from the north east of England, I can imagine a beautiful women like this with her son/searching for her lover, walking for miles throughout the hills of Whitby/Cleveland searching for her lover, until she came across Scarborough fair. In like the year 1400-1600… a lonely mother or wife searching for her knight in shining armour, before it was possible you’d find that true love again, when true love was seriously rare, the vocals hit you like non ever will. She’s singing into the sunset, hoping he’s out there somewhere, and somewhere he’s thinking of her… are you going to Scarborough fair? I am! (Parsley sage rosemary and thyme) the 4 love herbs. Healing, love, passion and just…. Love from north east 🏴 this hits a nostalgia nerve that no other music does. It’s not celt; it’s not Irish; it’s English as it gets. Mediaeval English, before Americans came around with guns. When brave men would kill with sword and shield to
Protect their beautiful wives and children and die if it meant so. This song touches them nerves. I love this women. Fucking incredible. Makes me proud to be English 🏴
Can't beat these old English folk songs :)
coolchazz98 Scarborough is in northern England on the Eastern shore, pretty far away from Wales.
Cant argue with that... yes indeed. I can feel everything from the English past :D beautiful and pristine. and more, no words can express how I can feel towards the english folks.
Voice of an angel.
her's voice seems to have been heard from heaven.
...beautiful voice...beautiful girl...beautiful music...great land....oh jesus...
This is my scenario after I listened to this song;
[Set in Scarborough Fair] "There once was a woman who was desperately in love with a certain man and he loved her as well. Yet one day he suddenly died and with him her heart died also. Overtime, she grew painfully depressed so much so that her friends and family worried for her; they begged her to move on but she always refused. Then one day she writes this poem out of devotion to her love and blatantly yet subtly makes it clear that no man will ever take his place. Winning her heart is as impossible as all the tasks she has set before every other man. She will never forget her love and her time with him in Scarborough Fair..." (later on a young musician discovers her poem and makes a beautiful yet longing tune to accompany it; And so her words live on through this song as well as her love for her one true love)

I've seen comments on this, that is not a flute or a recorder, that is a tin whistle. And this example is quite notable...world class playing. very underappreciated component in the feel of this song, IMO. That bridge is just incredible. It is a VERY "air hungry" instrument... It requires a lot of air velocity. Because of the instruments very distinctive tonal bending, it is very, very emotive. Almost haunting (especially with that reverb). Notable mention, that instrument always reminds me of the Titanic soundtrack. It was the lead instrument in the intro on the Celine Dion tune, 'My Heart Will Go On'. So I will probably forever associate it with that, as I was a little kid when that was a huge hit.
Love to my English brothers and sisters during this difficult time. From homesick friend

What a breathtaking woman beside her angelic voice. The whole appearance is so beautiful.
Goodness, I almost cried from this beautiful and emotional song. I just loved this version of that song. Deos anyone almost cried from this song as well?
700 years ago there were already people listening/singing this to express their feelings. People with lives more similar to ours than what we imagine... And here we are now. Listening to it again in a way that people couldn't even imagine, as they listened to it in a dark tavern of medieval England and not through a screen.
This makes me think about how great mankind is.
Indeed, I find it very frustrating that the scope of one person's existence is insignificant in comparison to all the people who have come before and will come after: Who the people of old were, things they did for a living, things they felt, so many millions of people who have lived and died among their family and friends that its impossible to be aware of the existence of. People who were destined to be rulers of people, or rich and famous, or perhaps the majority of us that live comparatively normal lives, and are unknown to most people. I want to have the knowledge of everything that's happened before and will happen after
Yeah... a good way of putting it. We're alienated from the way these people lived. Those middle-age people were not 'retarded'. They just saw it from a different perspective. Expressions like 'Thy pig be taken' (just before winter)n don't mean much to us, in times where we can buy packed meat in our super-markets in whatever season.

listening to he singing the song seems like I'm in an enchanted forest. I really love celtic-theme music such as this. The flute part is so soothing that it felt like I'm lying on a cool grassy field.
+Glenda Ofiana it's not Celtic. It's an English folk song. The melody is typical of the middle English period.
+Kaitlyn Lee Celtic Woman is the the name of the band, not the origin of the music. Scarborough Fair is manifestly an English folk song set in Scarborough, in Yorkshire. It's a very typical middle English period melody dating back to at least the 17th century. The arrangement on this song is not a Celtic on either. There were many variants of it.
Try not to mix up the name of a musical ensemble with the origin of the music.
Steve Jones I didn't care enough to read all of this. I also do not need any corrections when my staar test is today
+Kaitlyn Lee perhaps you should think twice before making uninformed comments then.
In any event, good luck with your tests.
"Scarborough Fair"
Are you going to Scarborough fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
He once was a true love of mine
Tell him to make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seam nor needlework
Then he'll be a true love of mine
Tell him to find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between the salt water and the sea strand
Then he'll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
He once was a true love of mine
In some versions there is "yesterday holds memories in time" instead of Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thime", but not in this version, so you are right!
oh my gosh, how does she get her voice to ring out so perfectly ? its like the winters wind cutting across the sharp granite outcrops on the tallest peaks.
What a woman - what a voice - wonderful! I'm full of enthusiasm.

The elegance in this performance is beyond perfection!
Hayley is very talented singer, one of the most underrated in my opinion. Her voice is truly that of an angel....
I don't think this is a Celtic woman ... rather a Celtic goddess. A beautiful rendering of a fantastic song.
Lovely voice, clear, no false notes. I've been coming back to this performance for a long time, I can listen to it endlessly
What a beautiful song..........
her voice is like a glacier stream in the high mountains; so crisp, pristine, pure..
These girls smile even with their eyes, Most beautiful and professional. May they prosper always.
The Celtic Women are indeed beautiful in their choice of music and in their style. They are just wonderful. I love them.
Yeah ....BUT she isn't a celtic woman....she is a kiwi born and bred in Christchurch New Zealand
I'm in music exam right now, and I have to analyze this song. I'm gonna be honest here, this is by far the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Is she even human? It's like she came straight from the middle ages. This song makes me feel like I was in that era, so magical!
Certainly one of the purest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Check out Hayley Westenra's duo with Andrea Bocelli also.
She is amazing.
I'm sure she has natural talent to start with - but with her range and pitch perfect notes, I'm thinking she must be an opera trained voice.
My music teacher played the start of this in our lesson today and my friend and I both got chills. Haunting.
How the hell can anybody "dislike" this song?! It's pure beauty and grace. Her voice is angelic

angelic voice, melts my soul every time I listening to this song
By far the most impressive part of this preformance was the way she managed to walk down that ramp in high heels and not trip on her dress. Like, that was legendary.
pfft, LOL!... I kinda have to agree though, that is amazing...
+WeeklyDotal lol, I only started looking at the comments after she has walked down that ramp. It is indeed amazing how gracefully she moves
+WeeklyDota Makes me wonder how many times she tripped and went rolling down the ramp in practice. It had to have happened with how careful and precise she was being. Lol.
ass. you sit and watch these talented people.... and this is your comment? grow up.
D Papson Ironic that in calling us an ass you yourself act like one. Instead of trying to rob people of enjoyment and happiness you could either ignore us altogether or join in the silliness and have a laugh. You have the right to take life too seriously and we have the right to having a light hearted chuckle at life's absurdities. Now, please do take your own advice and as you put it, "grow up".
There are three exceptionally beautiful things here; The woman, her voice and the flute play.
I live a pathetic lonely life until I use modern technology to connect with my tribal roots. What a beautiful world this is. And these artists keep me awestruck by the culture that is mine but so rarely exposed.
It is, for me, a life support system.
I owe these artists my life, every day that goes by, I do not feel alone and useless and forgotten. I just listen and I am happy.
You are neither alone or useless or forgotten - none of the above. God bless you - His love surrounds you.

BRAVO, miss Westenra.
Amazing as always.

I love how she has that medieval times voice it's amazing and I get chills when I hear her sing
"medieval times voice"
you mean the voice of female voice actors in medieval RPGs, you fucking nerd.
When I die, if angels exist, I hope to hear exactly THIS and it continues for eternity!!!!! I have seen Celtic Woman twice, live, and they are every bit as amazing and beautiful in person as anyone would hope. Their voices are sheer perfection. My favorites are Hayley, Meav, Chloe and Lisa Lambe but they are all vocally and visually stunning!!! Their songs make me so happy. :))
Looks like a princess. Beautiful and elegant. Love Hayley Westenra's angelic voice.
It doesnt get much better than this. Hayley has a stunning voice, is a beautiful girl, and dors absolute justice to this lovely old folk song.

Was soll man dazu noch groß sagen.

Nice to see a New Zealand woman in the Celtic Woman Group .... Hayley Westenra is from Christchurch, New Zealand - a True KIWI !! ... We are all proud of her.
That was beautiful. Her voice is so powerful.
When the flute player is playing it's like there's no one else in the room but just he and her. And his focus is fixed on her, she is the one that inspires his melody, she is the one that inspires the passion. That is what I see whenever I watch this beautiful piece of art
Who knows this song after watching sukasuka(WorldEnd)?

When I first heard this incredible tune it was by Paul Simon, I was floored. What at master composer I thought. I then learned this was NOT composed by him. Some one in Scotland in the 1700s wrote the song. I have since been in love with early English and Irish folk music.
