How to make null n alternative hypothesis in this case
    WORK PROBLEM
Can we conclude that patients with primary hypertension (PH), on the average, have higher total cholesterol levels than normotensive (NI) patients? This was one of the inquiries of interest for Rossi et al. (A-12). In the following table are total cholesterol measurements (mg/dl) for 133 PH patients and 41 NT patients. Can we conclude that PH patients have, on average, higher total cholesterol levels than NT patients? Let u 05.

  • @andresstreetpunk

So, my question is about how you write the null and alternative hypothesis. My teacher says that you cannot use less or equal ≤ or more or equal ≥ when you write the null hypothesis for example
    H0: p ≤ 0.01
    Ha: p > 0.01
My teacher says this is invalid and it should be
    H0: p = 0.01
    Ha: p > 0.01
But in introductory statistics 4th edition mentioned that you can use both, page 457 "(Note that some practitioners write H0 as a simple statement of equality, even with > or < as the symbol in the alternative hypothesis. This practice is also acceptable.)"
    Am I misunderstanding something?

Hi! My name is Janna I just wanna ask about this: (can you answer this to me just state the Null and alternative)
The management of a large hospital states that the mean age of its patients is 44 years. Records of a random sample of 100 patients give a mean age of 48.4 years. Using a population standard deviation of 18 years, test at the 5% significant level whether there is evidence that the managements statement is incorrect.

I'm confused. In my class the teacher taught us:
Mew = The current mean, what's currently the case (so e.g. 450g)
Mew0 (Null Hypothesis) = Someone comes along, says that 450g is not correct and suggests something else, e.g. 400g
But what's the alternative hypothesis here? Is it just that when the probability that it could be 400g is too low (hence, H0 is rejected), something else is suggested (a third option)?

my question is, how do we know (in example two about students and graduation) that the student with the alternative hypothesis thinks it is less than ,80 percent of students? How do we not know that the student (with the alternative hypothesis) doesn't think that it is more than .80 percent of the students that graduate? That seems like an assumption that you put (less than)?

the claim was it was at least .8 (meaning its greater than or equal to). The student thinks the value is different from greater than or equal to .8 and the only value different from that is less than 0.8.
