  • The Evil Dead is a 1981 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Sam Raimi and executive produced by Raimi and Bruce Campbell, who also starred alongside Ellen Sandweiss and Betsy Baker.
The film focuses on five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a remote wooded area.
After they find an audio tape that, when played, releases a legion of demons and spirits, members of the group suffer from demonic possession, leading to increasingly gory mayhem.
Raimi and the cast produced the short film Within the Woods as a "prototype" to build the interest of potential investors, which secured US$90,000 to produce The Evil Dead.
The film was shot on location in a remote cabin located in Morristown, Tennessee, in a difficult filming process that proved extremely uncomfortable for the cast and crew.
The low-budget horror film attracted the interest of producer Irvin Shapiro, who helped screen the film at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. Horror author Stephen King gave a rave review of the film, which helped convince New Line Cinema to serve as its distributor.
Though a modest commercial success in the United States, grossing just $2.4 million, it was a bigger success internationally, grossing more than $27 million for a worldwide gross of $29.4 million.
Both early and later critical reception were universally positive and in the years since its release, The Evil Dead has developed a reputation as one of the most significant cult films, cited among the greatest horror films of all time and one of the most successful independent films.
The Evil Dead launched the careers of Campbell and Raimi, who collaborated on several films together, including Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.
The film spawned a media franchise, beginning with two sequels written and directed by Raimi, Evil Dead II (1987) and Army of Darkness (1992), as well as video games, comic books, and a television series.
The film's protagonist Ash Williams (Campbell) is regarded as a cult icon. The fourth film, serving as reboot, remake and sequel, was titled Evil Dead and was released in 2013.
Raimi co-produced the film alongside Campbell and the franchise producer, Robert Tapert.
As with the films, the follow-up television series Ash vs Evil Dead was created and produced by Sam and Ivan Raimi, with Campbell also executive producing.

Nice review once again. Despite being my least fav of the trilogy, The Evil Dead is a classic flick and like you said shows what you can do with a low budget.

This is the best one of the trilogy for me, even though most people seem to prefer the second one. Like you said, it's much about the virtuosity and creativity of the cinematography.
I also loved the tv-show. The only thing that I have a problem with was the whole premise, where they made Ash be the one responsible for unleashing Evil, since he was smoking a joint with a chick and they decided to read from the Necronomicon for fun. That was just lame.

Hey cool review matt evil dead is one of those trilogies that I recommend to anyone of the horror genre I love the first one it was scary as the filmmakers intended it scared the shit out of me when I was just a little boy at 6 years old I remember to me it was wild to see a guy as the final one of the bunch because usually it's the girl and it was such a fucking shock to me 😂 close to the climax because you don't see that often these days Bruce Campbell's performance here was good I could compare it to as strong as shelly devull in the shining yeah because why can't a man act scared in a horror film my friends bitch about why wasn't Bruce Campbell here all kick ass like he was in the sequels and I say because he wasn't ready yet and also I say again why can't a guy act scared in a horror movie we men aren't all fucking tough and super heroic or cowboys shit like that you know we get fucking creeped out too why can't a man act scared in a horror movie and be the final one of the bunch why does it have to be a woman is it a fucking tradition ?! Or something 😄 but great review matt my dawg I remember being scared watching this my favorite part is when ash squishes scotty's eyes and pulls the tree branch out me and my brother thought he had pulled out his orgasms 😂 ooooh man I still don't fucking know what he pulled out to this day so I don't know what to tell him 😂🤣 Sam raimi direction was cool speaking of the shining hey matt did you know that Bruce Campbell smoked weed with Jack Nicholson he said that when he was young in his life that he and Jack Nicholson had done that I don't know if it's true or not 😂 but I love evil dead (1981) forgive me for saying it makes the exorcist (1973) look like a drunk prom date and I mean that keep rocking and rolling and boppin dawg ✌❤😁🤟💀 adios !

Just like you said Matt, too bad that more low budget horror films are not as good as this classic. And funny how you and Cody Leach uploaded reviews of the film on same day and almost at same time.
