Play EASY Riffs Off of Open Chords to Look & Sound Cool

- Using some of the theory that we have explored to date on my channel, we can create some EASY but cool riffs to play before or after our open chords. To do this, we start with the root note of the chord we are playing and build a 4 note box from there. We can play those 4 notes in any order and we can repeat them as often as we want for the desired effect...
I’m be starting the guitar for 30 years can you imagine how happy I am to find someone who finally makes sense of it all 56 years and I’m just starting to play thank you
welcome!, never too late to start. I try my best to keep things simple and avoid alot of "musiciansplaining"...watch for my live streams, you can ask any questions you may have.
Really a cool way. Thought provoking. Thanks Ray. 👍
Thankyou so much. What an amazing and incredible lesson. Thankyou a million times over. This is such a breakthrough for me. Thank you again
hope it helped, mored stuff coming thx
Neil Young is a master of playing transitions between chords.
Actually at about 3:00, since I use pinky, ring, and index for the A chord, my ring finger IS on the root. So I don't even have to think about it.
I noticed his "box" from the root is 1-2-4-5. It would be easy to find other notes in the scale from this box. For example, the 3rd is a semi-tone from the 4th, the 6th is a tone from the 5th, etc. Kinda cool. And once I have this box in muscle memory, I can experiment with using the 3rd instead of or in addition to the 4th, and so on with other notes. Cooler yet! Thank you for sharing, Ray!
With Ray's method, I need to figure out how to actually use this in songs I play and sing, after I get the muscle memory down. And yes, I also subscribed.
Another way of finding the box , may help many people 🙌🇬🇧
Great concept. I chose to approach the root from underneath. E.g. G-A-C-D-C on the C chord like the country players do. From there you can add hammer-ons and slides. It works well going up to the fifth as well instead of the root, i.e.D-E-G-A-G on the C chord. Cheers.
Nice, yes there's a great alternate way.
Very practical lesson! Thanks!
Good staring point bro love that I needed to know where to begin
thats the idea. many newer players find it hard to get started. Hopefully this opens a door for you...
Really good lesson!
A perfect example of this is from the song Amie by Pure prairie league
Oh dear and av spent hours on trying to get going on this, still I would continue for awhile greatful might get something out of it yet cheers
Remember, it's just a guideline to show you that you can take any of the fretted notes of that A chord asnd start a little 4 note box of notes that will sound good with the chord. There are endless ways to use one or more of those notes before or after the A chord. However creative you want to be and/or whatever sounds good to YOU...
Great Lesson ❤Thank you…
glad it helps, im live today at 2 pm if u wanna stop by...thx for your support
Right on ☮️
thanks Harry
Excellent lesson. That’s a lovely fat sounding Taylor guitar. What model is it Cheers
It,s a Taylor 416
your twin is on heres the deal channel
It’s the middle of the pentatonic scale.
Subscribed . Can you post the diagrams from the video?
i am starting to incorporate those into my newer v videos
How you know what note is the root note in a chord? I just ordered a fretboard memorizing card set but know a lot of them just super rusty lol
join me today at 2pm for live stream, i will explain.
sometimwes there are 2 roots, the bass root (thje lowest) and a higher one.
The root note is the note that bears the same name as the chord. So the root note of G is the G note. Those notes are usually circled or a different colour in the chord diagrams. chords are made up of notes from the major scale. they are numbered 1-7. So in G. G would be 1, A 2, B 3 , C 4, D 5 etc. A chord is made up of the 1, 3, 5 notes. So a G chord would be made of G,B,D with G being the root.
Bro the root notes just the first note in the chord...it's simple...
@@Billy-t9e actually...there can be more than one root not in a full chord, But on;ly one root note in a triad
Is wearing a scarf indoors necessary as part of looking cool while playing?
I dont know. Is trolling around and leaving stupid comments to strangers necessary to trying to be cool?
It's when you're cool you wear a scarf, when it's cold the hat and mittens too.😂,
I am not an internet troll by any means, I just give my honest opinion on what I have watched and / or listened to. 5 1/2 minutes into this video, which I feel has a lot of talking without playing so far, and what is being shown doesn't sound like what was described in the title. He even looked like he was trying to remember which way he was moving his fingers to play the four notes off of the chord. I didn't go past 5:31 after leaving this comment, but as I stated, it wasn't looking or sounding cool.
Thx for your comment and feedback...This is a channel for beginners and furthermore, a channel for beginners that tries to explain and make everything as easy as possible to understand. From the many other comments here about this video it would seem that most people get that and got this video. In many cases i often remind people when necessary that this is "only a basic way to start" or "this will get you started" or "do this to get you started in the right direction" and from there its all about practicing and making something better.. sorry for the talking but as i mentioned before, thats the nature of this channel and what people repeatedly tell me they like about this channel..And they like that I am not some wiz kid showoff who's only intent is to show people how good HE/SHE is.
This is obviously not for you and thats fine. i cant please everyone and i accept that. anyways, thanks again for your feedback.
I like the amount of explanation. Repeating and breaking down the sections helped me. Everyone teaches and learns differently. I'm more than satisfied. Learned what the video title indicated.
@@goldenglowladore3842 thanks...i was looking for the same type of explanatons when i was trying to learn...
I don't mind the amount of explanation but I was waiting and waiting to find out what it was we were actually heading for. I would've liked to hear at the very beginning with the end result of what we were doing was going to be.
@@thewiredidiot I understand what you are saying, and I can see this helping others to get started playing. Like I mentioned in my comment (it looks like this was 6 months ago), I was not trying to be mean spirited, I was just giving my opinion. Thank you for your reply back, and I hope your channel is doing well.
The problem is it doesn’t sound musical
it's up to you to make it that way, i just show people the theory behind it and where to get started. i persoanlly never got anything out of watching someone ripping through things at a much higher level than me.
Man it don’t sound good there are easier ways to put notes in between chord s to spice up your playing .. sorry I’m just been straight up .. take care my man 🎸
no worries, its also to show people that you can create your 4 note box off of any chord you play
Toe dabble in the pool sounds like Pink Floyd's wish you were here, ? Or am I wrong , either way a great sound & demo 👍
@@thewiredidiotI'm grateful to learn these boxed notes to go with chords! Lots of potential.
@@goldenglowladore3842 you can use this theory for any open chord and create little 4 note boxes off the rfoot note or other ffretted notes.
Very robotic sounding with no imbelishment style. Definitely not the approach I take lol😂
Being a beginners c hannel, I just show people the absolute basics explained so they can understand them and use it as a starting point in their own creativity. I watched people when i started and when they would go off on a "look at me" moment, I would be left lost and wondering. This is clearly a beginners channel and as such, people here may not yet have the ability to "embellish". Thats what they are working on. I'm sure you are a really good guitar player and probably the best. So not sure why the goings on at a beginners channel like this would be of interest to someone like you...thx for your comment.
Is it just me or is this guy tryna do the teaching part before he does the learning part?...doesnt really seem like he has much clue what hes talking about...
@user-sl8 It's just you!!!
