Play EASY Riffs Off of Open Chords to Look & Sound Cool

  • Using some of the theory that we have explored to date on my channel, we can create some EASY but cool riffs to play before or after our open chords. To do this, we start with the root note of the chord we are playing and build a 4 note box from there. We can play those 4 notes in any order and we can repeat them as often as we want for the desired effect...

Actually at about 3:00, since I use pinky, ring, and index for the A chord, my ring finger IS on the root. So I don't even have to think about it.
I noticed his "box" from the root is 1-2-4-5. It would be easy to find other notes in the scale from this box. For example, the 3rd is a semi-tone from the 4th, the 6th is a tone from the 5th, etc. Kinda cool. And once I have this box in muscle memory, I can experiment with using the 3rd instead of or in addition to the 4th, and so on with other notes. Cooler yet! Thank you for sharing, Ray!
With Ray's method, I need to figure out how to actually use this in songs I play and sing, after I get the muscle memory down. And yes, I also subscribed.

Great concept. I chose to approach the root from underneath. E.g. G-A-C-D-C on the C chord like the country players do. From there you can add hammer-ons and slides. It works well going up to the fifth as well instead of the root, i.e.D-E-G-A-G on the C chord. Cheers.

Remember, it's just a guideline to show you that you can take any of the fretted notes of that A chord asnd start a little 4 note box of notes that will sound good with the chord. There are endless ways to use one or more of those notes before or after the A chord. However creative you want to be and/or whatever sounds good to YOU...

The root note is the note that bears the same name as the chord. So the root note of G is the G note. Those notes are usually circled or a different colour in the chord diagrams. chords are made up of notes from the major scale. they are numbered 1-7. So in G. G would be 1, A 2, B 3 , C 4, D 5 etc. A chord is made up of the 1, 3, 5 notes. So a G chord would be made of G,B,D with G being the root.

I am not an internet troll by any means, I just give my honest opinion on what I have watched and / or listened to. 5 1/2 minutes into this video, which I feel has a lot of talking without playing so far, and what is being shown doesn't sound like what was described in the title. He even looked like he was trying to remember which way he was moving his fingers to play the four notes off of the chord. I didn't go past 5:31 after leaving this comment, but as I stated, it wasn't looking or sounding cool.

Thx for your comment and feedback...This is a channel for beginners and furthermore, a channel for beginners that tries to explain and make everything as easy as possible to understand. From the many other comments here about this video it would seem that most people get that and got this video. In many cases i often remind people when necessary that this is "only a basic way to start" or "this will get you started" or "do this to get you started in the right direction" and from there its all about practicing and making something better.. sorry for the talking but as i mentioned before, thats the nature of this channel and what people repeatedly tell me they like about this channel..And they like that I am not some wiz kid showoff who's only intent is to show people how good HE/SHE is.
This is obviously not for you and thats fine. i cant please everyone and i accept that. anyways, thanks again for your feedback.

Being a beginners c hannel, I just show people the absolute basics explained so they can understand them and use it as a starting point in their own creativity. I watched people when i started and when they would go off on a "look at me" moment, I would be left lost and wondering. This is clearly a beginners channel and as such, people here may not yet have the ability to "embellish". Thats what they are working on. I'm sure you are a really good guitar player and probably the best. So not sure why the goings on at a beginners channel like this would be of interest to someone like you...thx for your comment.
