Planes is a 2013 American 3D computer-animated sports comedy film produced by DisneyToon Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.[9] It is a spin-off of Pixar's Cars franchise and the first film in a planned Planes trilogy.[10] Despite not being produced by Pixar, the film was co-written and executive produced by Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer John Lasseter, who directed the Cars films. The film stars the voices of Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Priyanka Chopra, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Danny Mann, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Roger Craig Smith, John Cleese, Carlos Alazraqui, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards.
Like many of DisneyToon's films, it was initially set to be released as a direct-to-video film,[11] but was instead theatrically released on August 9, 2013 in the Disney Digital 3D and RealD 3D formats.[6][12] The film grossed $239.3 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.[8] A sequel, titled Planes: Fire & Rescue, was theatrically released on July 18, 2014.[13]

One of my favorite characters is Tripp. Not just for his realistic paint job, but because he’s a plane with few words, literally! His tug (John Ratzenberger) was getting annoying with his long and complicated instructions to get to the pits in JFK Airport. Tripp steps in and just gives Dusty much simpler instructions. Just go straight ahead, to the right. Talk about having Sigma energy!
Planes is sooooo underated. It's a great movie. I love it. I think it will never air on TV again. An underated movie by populars actors. Not as famous as Cars. Not as many people know this movie as much as Cars. Planes became popular for a very short time. Then became underated.
I always thought in general that Rip was a Bf-109 and Dusty was a p-51

That would make sense.. But I thought rip was a mk24 spitfire but with razorback canopy
Rip does look like a mix of BF-109 and P-51 (Mostly), and the contrarotating props of a Seafire FR 47
But Dusty has nothing in the lines of a WWII fighter.
And there is a P-51 Mustang as the commentator, and also a red tailed mustang appears in the first half of the movie.

The world of Cars
It’s funny how the Storyline of the Planes movie have gone because it’s similar to the actual service life of Dusty’s model line (I believe his specific aircraft to be the Air Tractor AT-502). The plane became widespread in use as a SEAT in real life because Crop Dusters for smaller farms don’t make a whole lot of financial sense. If there were to be a Planes 3, the movie would be about Dusty joining the Military, as Air Tractor and L3 Harris just received the military contract to build the Sky Warden, or at least more of them, which is a combat modified AT-802, the plane which succeeded Dusty’s theoretical model

Hes the only character outright stated to not be a real plane since he is a "custom carbon fibre racing plane" though its likely his design is based on the p51 mustang. I do suspect its including the vents as a throwback to the P40 E-1 Warhawk that had a large nose hood intake. which was removed in later p40 and not present in the early p51
