I love unsolved Mysteries. It came out when I was in my teens. So unfortunate about the lady hitchhikers murdered. They were naive and thought nothing could happen to them. I was a kid in the 1970s and 80's and you would see sometimes on the road people hitchhiking. Too dangerous. Glad people arent doing it anymore. Do not hitchhike and never pick up a hitchhiker. The cell phone ,which they did not have back when I was a kid saved countless lives. No more do you have to telephone home from a lonely phone booth at midnight. Not safe to do that. Back then you would risk robbery to yourself or possibly be murdered.
I sure really truly honestly wouldn't advise any young people to hitch hike for it isn't safe to do. You could end up being killed by someone who you don't know anything about.

Do you ever find the outro music of UM is more creepy and unsettling than the intro theme tune? It's more subtle but also darker and more frightening. I remember seeing a photo of one of the alien beings from the Missing Time episode to this outro theme in the background. It was one of the most scariest things I ever saw and felt.
Great info/upload as usual! I have hitch hiked thousands of miles around the US and also stopped to help others point A to point B. Stopped that 30yrs ago. Got way too dangerous. Worried several times. "Teach Your Children Well". I don't recommend it. Godspeed!

I'm 58 & have lived in the UK all my life & although England is a reletively safe country, even as a guy,I wouldn't hitchhike or recommend anybody else should! Unfortunately there was a sad case not 10 miles from where I am now where an absolutely stunning girl was making her way back home from a music festival with her boyfriend. A guy had picked them up & they had dropped the boyfriend off first. The girl then disappeared & was only found, I think years later, in someone's back yard. The guy was arrested & charged. Don't hitchhike people!
In Sweden you could literally legally stop over and camp overnight on someone else's private property. Sweden had no such compulsion in hitchhiking in the 80-90s because it was one of the safest countries in Europe. Because of this, however, they tended to be clueless on how dangerous life in the US can be if you hitchhike. The segment also plays into the "Blue Swede" character type: the naive Scandinavian going in the Wild West and stupidly dying because of a dumb decision or saying the wrong words. It's there since the Wild West times.
I remember a long time a go picking up a hitchhiker in the rain with my mom and sister in law but I would never do it these days. More crazy people than ever out there.
Same here! I have some Scandinavian lineage and if I were driving and saw one or two females hitch-hiking, I wouldn't stop because I don't know if I was going to be the target of a car-jacking or worse!

We had a family car but my mother on occasion hitchhiked to places around town when I was a kid back in the 70's and we didn't have to wait long for a ride. Both parents worked but my father had main control of the car, not saying it was safer to hitchhike back then, nothing happened to us thank goodness.
Watching these episodes now I forget the crimes happened so long ago, and feel surprised when they say the criminals were in prison, but are now released. It seems like there should be updates to the other crimes they went on to do.

My theory is that it could be Robert Pickton. He's from Canada, Vancouver specifically. He was a pig farmer, but he also ran successful businesses and had many connections to crime and the criminal underbelly. He was extremely wealthy and could easily travel if he wanted to. He matches the description of thinning red hair (he eventually wore a toupee), and a long pointed nose (people said that he had a rat face), he wasn't tall but average height and skinny. The only two snags in this theory are that Pickton claimed he only ever left Canada once (although he likely lied as he is a serial killer) and Pickton did not enjoy bathing and keeping himself clean. No one would really want to get in a vehicle with him as he lived in a disgusting way.

I feel really sorry for him and the other victims of Ms. Bernard. It could be extremely difficult to know your real name, your real birthday, etc. Only genetic genealogy could help these people find their real families. Even that might not help in some cases.
Scandinavians didn't consider hitchhiking safe back then. Many hitchhikers have been murdered or gone missing in Scandinavian countries before the year 1983.
Some mysteries are just meant to be forever unsolved. And Gary Simmons and the two Swedish hitchhikers have always had forever unsolved written all over them
Lessons learned from the arrest of Bessie (hawk spit) Bernard: 1) When searching the apartment, always have more people present than are IN the apartment. 2) Always station at least one, and preferably TWO policemen outside the apartment door to prevent flight. 3) If the old fart still gets out, have at least a police car outside the building to cut him off. 4) Instruct all baby-snatching suspects present to SIT DOWN before you search, and not interfere, or you will arrest them. 5) When someone physically *attacks* you as you search their purse, it's no time to pull punches, old lady or no. Restrain them immediately. 6) If all this is too much, simply have the SWAT team raid the baby-snatchers, the way they seemingly get used to serve every other kind of warrant. Let old Bessie "go berzerk" on a half-dozen officers with AR-15s, and see what happens. There's a time and place for the use of force, and it just may look more like Bessie Bernard than some black kid.
I’ve never understood why adopted kids feel the need so bad to find their “birth parents”. Their adoptive parents literally wanted them more than anything in the world and they HAVE a family. Family is who raises you, not who shitted you out. And majority of the times, they didn’t even want them in the first place, that’s why they gave em up.
You have to understand the feelings of alienation and not belonging or fitting in with the rest of the family- i’m not adopted but always felt adopted due to never feeling like i fit in and belonged to the rest of my family - it gives a person answers to lots of questions and peace a lot of times to find their birth parents or family and enables them to move on with their life - also when you don’t know your birth family medical issues and questions can get complicated and make things harder in older age - you may carry genetic medical conditions and not know it and fail to get treatment- that is a very important reason to know your family history
The genetics and instincts don't lie. They're always in a person. It's something that goes beyond just personality or character, but it's a part of the person.
I can understand wanting to find one's roots, but the lack of gratitude to the adopting family sickens me to a great extent. People seem to really underestimate how much time, stress, and expense goes into raising a child. If I had been adopted (I almost was, thank God my father refused to let me be put up for adoption), I would be too ashamed to express the degree of ingratitude that goes into "needing" to "search for your roots".

I'm confused as to why they didn't go back to the original guy that told Gary Simmons about Tom Dixon in the first place. It seems that a lot of people knew who this guy was but yet the investigation never really got off the ground.
Worse than the ruin caused by all the criminals’ crimes and the pain and anguish they have caused, is the fact that many if the perpetrators, i would say MOST of them, even when caught, are given way too short of sentences and then set free to go right back to living as they did before, and in cases where persons have been bilked of thousands and thousands if dollars, nothing is ever said about any attempts to hold them responsible for repayment; moreover, they ate certain to go right on to another victim.

@@colleenvantrease4977 i agree i do once in awhile see someone hitch hiking but not that often and not nearly as much as i used to. we've never stopped either to give someone a ride though
Instead of Do not hitchhike, we should say Do not kill women

Do you ever find the outro music of UM is more creepy and unsettling than the intro theme tune? It's more subtle but also darker and more frightening.
I remember seeing a photo of one of the alien beings from the Missing Time episode to this outro theme in the background. It was one of the most scariest things I ever saw and felt.
I remember watching this with my mom every week.We rarely missed an episode..
Classic TV 📺 I MISS These days & Robert Stack
Great info/upload as usual! I have hitch hiked thousands of miles around the US and also stopped to help others point A to point B. Stopped that 30yrs ago. Got way too dangerous. Worried several times. "Teach Your Children Well". I don't recommend it. Godspeed!
The Swedish girls segment seemed to end abruptly and incomplete.
lame police job, in the golden state, as often, specially in the 90's. I had to say so
Yeah they cut out any mention of a man named Loren, there was a lifetime update which mentioned they had searched Loren's residence and would let us know if there was enough evidence to charge Loren with the deaths. I don't think there was but he fits the description and was still a main suspect. Loren Herzog died in 2012.

I got it too! It’s worth every cent!
Most recent update was she was now supposedly alive on the island possibly bleeding and at night by a fire coconut crabs came out and killed her.. They are vicious

I must admit I wouldn't put the Swedes as anymore guilable or naive than any other nation?

I am in Australia and still love the Binge watching we had these episodes back in the early 80's it was awesome and it still is
We had a family car but my mother on occasion hitchhiked to places around town when I was a kid back in the 70's and we didn't have to wait long for a ride. Both parents worked but my father had main control of the car, not saying it was safer to hitchhike back then, nothing happened to us thank goodness.
That there is an unbroken chain of good luck; very fortunate.
Sad that he came first and she had to hitchhike with a child.glad you are safe

I cry every time I see these lost loves episodes.
I always wanted to have information on a case... never did!
My fave tv show ever!! I still listen now nearly every day and evening to wind down takes me back to my childhood
Watching these episodes now I forget the crimes happened so long ago, and feel surprised when they say the criminals were in prison, but are now released. It seems like there should be updates to the other crimes they went on to do.
I hitchhiked in my teens, usually with a friend... sometimes I was alone,I was lucky enough to not get hurt or worse....but did meet some scary people by doing that!!
Can anyone imagine Robert Stack telling a joke?? Lol like could you even laugh.....😂

@@egala005 I was just about to say. Hard to believe watching "Unsolved Mysteries" but he's hillarious in "Airplane!"
He had a great sense of humor. Starred in Airplane! Did a spoof of himself in a cameo of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Baseketball. He also did voicework for Mike Judge on Beavis and Butthead Do America (FULL CAVITY SEARCHES) and guest appearances on King Of The Hill.
He said one at the beginning..."others say perhaps he was plane wrong"
Wasn't there a composite sketch of the killer of the hitchhikers? I believe I saw it when it aired on TV!
Its rumored that the swedish hitchhikers were murdered by the speed freak killers Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog
leofunkhowser33 🤦🏾♂️ Jesus, there’s more than one guy in the world named Loren lol. This case has nothing to do with the Speed Freak Killers. That Loren doesn’t even come close to matching the description. In addition, he was not Canadian lol.

The anonymous caller later came forward and helped police locate the man named "Loren". However, there was not enough substantial evidence to convict him for the crimes. "Loren" was later arrested and convicted in other crimes, but has never been charged with the murders. "Loren" is believed to be Loren Joseph Herzog. He and Wesley Shermantine were dubbed the "Speed Freak Killers." Herzog died of suicide on January 16, 2012, and Shermantine is currently on death row. This duo is suspected of the murders of at least 15 people, including possibly Michaela Garecht.
@@g.b569Turns out none of them were involved. It was serial killer David Misch.

@muhglenschlop2770 how do you know this?
Lessons learned from the arrest of Bessie (hawk spit) Bernard:
1) When searching the apartment, always have more people present than are IN the apartment.
Because they wanna know where they come from
You have to understand the feelings of alienation and not belonging or fitting in with the rest of the family- i’m not adopted but always felt adopted due to never feeling like i fit in and belonged to the rest of my family - it gives a person answers to lots of questions and peace a lot of times to find their birth parents or family and enables them to move on with their life - also when you don’t know your birth family medical issues and questions can get complicated and make things harder in older age - you may carry genetic medical conditions and not know it and fail to get treatment- that is a very important reason to know your family history

AGREE i wish they did. Maybe they did but police kept this part secret...
Can you point to any cases covered on the show where people were released after serving their sentences and re-offended?
