ORS Cross Country Skis Direct Video Productions presents " How to Cut Ski Poles ", a video demonstration on how to cut down the length of any nordic ski poles to any custom size. This is a convenient do-it-yourself way to make shorter length ski poles, as often times retailers only have certain longer length ski poles available (or you may want to just cut down a current pair of ski poles). All you need is a pot of hot water to soak the pole grips and loosen the glue adhesive, a basic hacksaw, measuring tape and any glue adhesive or epoxy etc.
I just cut my brand new madshus redline carbon racing poles. Was terrified I would cut then to the wrong size because I am pretty specific, but I did it perfectly.
They are not round, meaning I couldn't rotate them easily at all. I just moved my blade back and forth without putting any downwards pressure at all (let gravity do the work). I used a hacksaw, but a finer blade wil work even better.
Also to note is that it can fray no matter the blade you use, so putting some painters tape where you are gonna cut it will prevent chipping generally. Also you can mark the cut line on the tape with a ballpoint pen easily. I usually allign the bottom part of the blade with the cut line so I actually cut slightly above the line. I do this because my saw blade has a thickness too. I learned this from cutting carbon steerer tubes where millimeter precision is needed for everything to fit correctly.
Also aligning grips on non round poles is very easy, they only go on the correct way round😂
Great instructional video!! So weird that REI no longer provides this service! Guess I'll have to go skiing at Sun Valley to get my new poles re-sized (or find that vice and pole cutter myself...in smallish NYC apartment. 😎
I still love those types of pole grips (even though they make it easier to break your thumb on a fall...) Wish I could find those grips and encircle the bank of the hand... My fave style were made by Scott.
Thanks Onionboy, especially the part about realigning the basket and grip. I had some swix poles that the grips were on tight. Didn't want to twist it to break the cork structure so stuck pole in between door and frame and pulled it through to get it off.
Thanks Ryan... saved me at rip to town!
May I suggest that after cutting a carbon pole you should put some CA glue (crazy glue) on the end where it was just cut. This will stop the fibers from fraying and weakening the pole. Park Tool also make a Carbon Fiber specific hacksaw blade. It will cut carbon much better then a metal blade.
Thanks! All clear and plus good tips!
Good video but I would like to emphasize the importance of cutting carbon/fiberglass poles with extreme caution. Like he mentions - cut gently around the circumference. Rotate the poll as you cut through it. Don't be aggressive - cut very gently. I know because I just cracked a carbon pole while cutting through it.
Big help. Thanks for posting.
Thanks very much. This was helpful!
Thank You, it works well !
Thanks
Thanks a lot :)
