To be more precise, the person talking in the video is Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla Motor Company and designer of the car. He also is the owner of the other company he mentions in the video "Solar City" who is the company pairing with Tesla Motors to produce the chargers to be used by their customers to charge the cars.

By the way, what do you think is inside that white tower, the charging station? Obviously it has to store energy, since it delivers 120000 watts on demand even at night, far more than solar panels can produce. I say its big flywheels stored in vacuum, these can store that kind of energy very efficiently for days, and can be charged slowly and give off the energy rapidly. It could also be condensators or rechargeable batteries, but the speaker mentioned the system is low-cost.

How many ports at each station (and thus the max total Wattage draw at each station)? How much kW of solar at each station?

  • @ibainesy
    @ibainesy 11 років тому

I'll suggest something, create a few spots at each shopping mall/complex, a little bit wider than the average car space to accommodate the chargers (hooked up to solar panels on the roof if its a multi-level car park.) hell the mall/complex owners could charge $1 to use the station if they wanted and it would still be cheaper than petrol.
Also would the connections be available to purchase to fit 1 in your home?

His stuttering is due to the fact he has so much knowledge and his vision is so huge that something as simple as public speaking is actually very difficult (you can tell he's trying to figure out which synonyms to use to describe what he's saying so others can understand). This is pretty common in people that are able to achieve huge tasks like run a company etc.

Does anybody ask themselves how many vehicles a day these solar panel stations can handle? How long will the lines be before you get your turn at having your vehicle charged? Having a station three hours away only having to wait for everyone else to charge their cars, doesn't sound very convenient.

  • @MessyBeaver

... Alot of gas stations don't even take six at a time, solar panels can be put on the roofs of existing gas stations (no, they don't need fields anymore for anything below a MW) and it's an emerging tech. It's a massive leap forward from what we have now and it can (and will) always improve: just give it time.

I think it can be used in a long term way but your right until more charging stations pop up specifically superchargers across the country it will likely not be as wide spread. I myself live in Michigan and there as far as I know are no super chargers anywhere near me so if i had a Model S i would be forced to use the Public Level 2 chargers when going cross country.

Actually, solar panels have an expiry date so if you divide the energy used to manufacture it by its lifetime, you are still using petroleum, embodied in the production of solar panels and in the transportation of it from the place of production to the station.

A great presentation - undoubtedly the future of transportation right there. For me though, there was a little something missing from proceedings. another thing thats pretty amazing is the concept of wireless charging...currently its not very efficient and its pretty slow but as it develops and becomes like superfast and it gets combined with this...its a pretty fascinating view of the future. instead of pulling into a gas station and doing what u do today...in the future u would pull into a charging station, not hav to get out the car and drive off fully charged for free in sunlight in 30 seconds or less. damn.

It's a very nice and hopeful vision.
However, what happens in the winter with those who travel in snow.
Say, you get caught in a storm.. How much energy can these(sorry for the lose term) storage bins hold? Also, how well can the solar panels absorb light during a period of consecutive cloudy days?
I ask these things, because this is what I've been waiting for. Hopefully there are logical answers to these questions.

    1. Is the supercharger station compatible with what Toyota and Honda offers now? If not, why not?
    2. Battery decay?
    3. All supercharger stations will be provided solely by the Tesla company, what if someday they suddenly decided to charge you again?
    4. The supercharger stations are putting electricity back into the grid now with few model Ss, but what if there're hundreds of thousands of people driving? Will the solar power be enough? Will they eventually need to pull electricity from grid?

Each battery is a 3.7V lithium ion battery; to do say 100kW charging, you'd need 27,000A per battery. And thousands of 27,000A power supplies are not cheap, not to mention wiring etc. Charging in series makes complete sense.

No doubt it will eventually entail a fee, as much for the installation of the Superchargers, but this guy is thinks in a language called 'revolution'. At one point in history, there were only half a dozen gas stations. Today, there are only half a dozen supercharger stations. Now watch history unfold before your eyes. A great day for humanity!
