They are two deities of South India( coastal karnataka) Panjurli(Yellow face one) and Guliga(Black faced one) They are Regional Gatekeepers of their individual region .They protect people and villages from all kinds of negative energy.Basically they are Assigned as Guardians of their region (villages)By goddess Chamundeshwari ( one of the fierce form of Goddess parvati )These two deities also regard Goddess parvati as their mother.

Ohh...thanks for the information😅 but if you don't mind me asking I saw somewhere in comment section some were saying they are ancestors spirits who were getting worshipped way before Hindu religion came forward(which I personally disagree upon but since I am not the native of that region so better to be silent) So I was wondering according to your info the link with Hinduism is quite evident then some making noise of ancestors is quite confusing...Anyways its totally fine in case you don't wana answer/explain...Thanks 😌

@@runali4065 In one way it's right... The 9 avatars of lord Vishnu is nothing other than evolution just told 15,000 years ago by Adi yogi himself. Matsya avatar - life started from water, Kurma avatar - life started to advance to land, Varaha - Life very rooted into the body and so on. You can get the reference to this if you search. In this context, it's right to say they are our ancestors. And this is the only culture where we make our own gods not that we see gods as separate. We see god in everything.

@@runali4065 Before Hinduism means what you called hindu religion it doesn't exist according to Hindus , it was named by external invadors. We hindus are not religious people we only follow only Sanatana Dharma means eternal law, nothing else. Hindu is a geographic term means whoever born in this place ( Indian subcontinent) they are hindu. So one way what they are trying to say is correct. It's that those comments are trying to say and you can't get it.
For additional information most South Indian people very aware about this above fact so whenever misunderstanding come they always protest it and called out "hindu religion " word but Most North Indian are not.

I am from coastal Karnataka (Mangaluru city) and Boota Kola is integral part of the culture here. As a kid I was scared to attend Boota Kola as the vibe and environment is intimidating and scary often (for me as a kid) and I used to stand behind my dad legs holding onto his hands tightly. Only when I turned 15 I started to understand the importance of it and how it brings kind of soothing effect to one mental faculty. There is devotion aspect to it obviously but its cultural and social impact is underrated but very important.
P.S: Boota Kola is also there in Kerala. I think it is called Theyyam.

Also there in TN, (Tamilnadu) as "kolavai" and they make sounds with their tongue and also talk..but as with every good, natural and divine thing, humans misuse these people for their vested interests, as shown in the film, where the landlord asks the kola performer to do kola in his favor...such people would go to the extent of bribing even the purest and highest and noblest God's, without knowing that will be their end..

This culture has nothing to do with Hinduism. The word Hindu was introduced in 1798 by Sir. Williams Jones . Brahmins (who don't belong to this land) are trying to swallow all the indigenous cultures in name of Hindu. That's why Lingayaths(Kanada) and Saivers(Tamils) are saying that they are not Hindus.

Varaha, the third incarnation of Lord. Vishnu, the supreme among all Gods. The belief is that the holy guardian forest sprit Panjurli (which is in the form of a wild boar) and Guliga protect the forest and the people living off of the forest. During this dance performance its believed the dancers go in trance and divine sprit communicates thru them to address any concerns devotees would have. For example if I have a difficult decision to take like should I pursue a certain job or sell a certain property or family disputes and problems they seek audience with the divine sprite communicating thru the dancer. The gesture of dancer tapping hands in there chest is a sign of assurance of protection ( meaning I am there for you ). The different gestures mean different things and it can vary from assurance, warning to touching of hands to warm hugs. Its said out of the audience the sprit will read your heart and choose who to communicate to. I different parts of India there are different local demi gods called Kshetra (place in Sanskrit) Palaka (protector in Sanskrit) Daiva (god). In Tamilnadu there is similar tradition of Ayyanar, Karuppu Sami, at time it would be a demi goddess as well.

Apart from all the details added by numerous people about the two dieties, I would like to add that I could connect to this movie as the concept of Kula-daivam (ancestral gods) is native to every village in india (north or south) and this point really helps people outside of Karnataka to really connect with this movie.

You are absolutely right. This dance form which is a part of a practice called Bhoota Kola is unique to a small region of Karnataka state in India. Each small region of the state has some unique form of worship of god and ancestors. Here the worship is that of a spirit of ancestors who have come down to fight injustice.
The whole thing is an experience as you said, takes hours to prepare and unique in visuals and music. This form is hundreds of years old and has influenced the newer form called Yakshagana that came into being around 1300 CE.
The movie itself has cultural, political and ecological overtones but this particular piece is a very successful mix of Paaddana (folklore oral narrative), Carnatic classical music and Hard Rock. The music and video together not only show how music from different cultures can mix, but that practices of any culture can mix with another, and nature and humans co-exist.

In different parts of India there are different local demi gods called Kshetra (place in Sanskrit) Palaka (protector in Sanskrit) Daiva (god). In Tamilnadu there is similar tradition of Ayyanar, Karuppu Sami, at time it would be a demi goddess as well. You can say its like an Indian shaman tradition. This tradition is still prevalent in the rural parts of India where people are still rooted the soil. In this movie they have focused on south Karnataka state region called Tulunadu bordering Kerala. The belief is that the holy guardian forest sprit Panjurli (which is in the form of a wild boar) represented with yellow face paint and Guliga ( Panjurli’s associate) represented by black face paint protect the forest and the people living off of the forest. They both have different origin stories based in local folklore. Panjurli is said to have been created by Lord Shiva’s wife mother Goddess Parvathi as her pet boar in Himalayas, but it’s really naughty and Shiva hunts it down. Parvathi becomes furious and Shiva to avoid her wrath revives Panjurli’s sprit and sends him to Tulunadu region to protect the forest and its people in its sprit form. Meanwhile Guliga has a more darker origin story. Both Panjurli and Guliga have kind of sibling bond ( they fought each other onetime and then with higher divine intervention dispute was resolved and they were blessed to be as inseparable as blood siblings). Its more like classic buddy cop story of the good and bad cop. Panjurli is more people friendly approachable and is often worshipped with other deities within home. Whereas Guliga is represented in form of an irregular shaped rock often half buried below the tree within the boundary of the property said to guard the border and keep evil entities out of the property. Guliga is known for his voracious appetite and standing up for Panjurli. Hope this would help in understanding references when you eventually get to watch the movie.

It is one of thousands of rituals across India worshipping Gods. There are many native instruments perfectly fused with Western ones. The main instrument, is completely indigenous and has different names in different Indian languages. It is generally called Shehnai, a piper. The language of the song is Sanskrit, tune is Indian classical, dance and costumes ares a version of Kadhakali, many ingenious instruments with a western touch.

Varaha means Boar (wild Boar) which is one of the incarnations of Vishnu.
This movie has some extremely deeper connotations of Sanatan dharma, rutuals, traits. The protagonist of Kabtara is Shiva, the ranger has been named as Murali (which means Vishnu). They fight and then becomes one. The represents non-duality.
If you are clueless about what I said, but if this interests you. You will find out.

I have seen this movie yesterday and movie is excellent.
I am from West India and this movie have refreshed my memories with my Lt. grandmother. When I was kid, she uses to tell me bedtime stories of our ancestor village. One of the stories was of Lord Kshetrapal dada. She told that when she was of my age (may be 5-6 years) she has experienced the presence of Lord kshetrapal (guardian of village and people). Lord use to guard the village at night and use to patrol on his white horse. They used to hear sounds of mystical bells ( ghungharoo ) tied on horse legs. No one tries to follow him or see him. As a kid I was amused by this and asked still he guards the village. She told yes but no one now experienced him after one incident. Once, a man tried to follow him and lord got disappeared at the outskirts of the village near riverbank. Now, at present there is very big temple build at the same place and whenever we use to visit our village, we use to take blessing of Lord Kshetrapal Ji. My father and uncle always narrated the incidents of thieves who never got success to cross the river before temple in taking stolen things out of village.
Gramdevta , Kshetrapal or Panjurli is nothing new in our sanatan culture. Almost, every village or town in India have their Gram Devta. Majorly gram devatas are Gods like Hanumanji , Kalbharavji , or relative to supreme lord shiva. However, in many places gramdevta are goddess too.
We have very reach culture, rituals and traditions in India. This is one of the stories of Kundapur village of udupi district. We have thousands of villages in India and each of the villages will have something to share. We need many more films like this.

Varaha form, the third incarnation of Lord. Vishnu, the supreme among all Gods.
He who assumes the form of a wild boar; the greatest of the demons.
With teeth as hard as diamond, he who protects us like a shield.
He who embodies the essence of Shiva; the one who thrives on earth.
He who gives refuge to those who believe in him.
