Carpenter Bees Damage Wood by Boring, Male Carpenter Bee

  • This video shows the damage carpenter bees can do to unfinished wood. Particularly in the soffit area and generally on the north side of my out-buildings.
    See the Male Carpenter Bee up close. The Female carpenter bee appears much the same, but she has no yellow square on her head and she does have a stinger.
    The female excavates the wood and through the years, can construct tunnels that are several feet long, weakening structures.

    Thanks a lot for the video! I had a carpenter bee stuck inside my window in NYC and I was very afraid of being stung because of a mild bee allergy, but after watching your video I figured out it was a male, so I managed to release it without fear.

    Every Spring there's always a period where these things turn up dead/dying on my driveway. during summer they ALWAYS hover around a particular high traffic deck area, I have heard they actually chase wasps but they just seem to get out of the way when people pass by

    Carpenter bees don't chew out the base of the flowers they pollinate just like other bees, seconds of honey bees and bumblebees

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 місяців тому

      Bypassing Pollen:
      Yes, in some cases, carpenter bees do bypass the pollen anthers when they chew holes at the base of flowers. Their powerful mandibles allow them to create shortcuts directly to the nectar, ignoring the reproductive organs of the flower. This behavior is known as nectar robbing and while it allows them to access food quickly, it doesn't contribute to pollination.
      Pollination:
      However, it's not always the case that carpenter bees bypass the anthers. They can also legitimately visit flowers, entering through the natural opening and brushing against the reproductive organs during their nectar collection. This behavior facilitates pollination, just like other pollinators such as honeybees.
      Factors Influencing Behavior:
      The flower species plays a role. Some flowers, with deep corollas or hidden nectar, might be more susceptible to nectar robbing by carpenter bees due to the difficulty of legitimate access.
      Carpenter bee species also vary in their behavior. Some are more prone to nectar robbing than others.
      Overall:
      While carpenter bees can bypass pollen anthers through chewing, their impact on pollination depends on specific circumstances. They can be both contributors and robbers depending on the flower and their own behavior.

    One thing I noticed about male carpenter bees is because don't have stingers, they just buzz all around you, as they are trying to get on your nerves.

    We have carpenter bees on our deck. I sit out there to read and I think it's HILARIOUS when they hover around trying to intimidate me. I quite like carpenter bees, but we really can't afford to be rebuilding our deck. Any advice on which trap to buy or how to make one? Or if I can make them a house they'll prefer to our deck?

      I just use 4 x 4 stock and cut holes into it on two faces at 45 deg angles going up and in. The center, I drill a 3/4" diameter hole straighe up from the botton - the 1/4" diameter angled holes go into the center 3/4 inch hole. Then I screw a peanut butter jar lid to the bottom and make sure it also has that 3/4" hole in the center. I have them on all of my sheds under the soffit areas and never take them down. I found that by leaving dead carpenter bees in them, new bees are encouraged to investigate the hole and ker-plunk, another one falls in. They average 18-23 females per year per trap. Easy to make, Observe where the females are already scouting and put your trap there, they definitely have location preferences.

    I have an ongoing battle with these little guys. Doesn't matter if it's painted wood but the worse part is when the woodpeckers come along and rip bigger holes to eat the baby's right after they hatch! I've tried plugging the holes but they clean them right back out. Only choice is to spray to kill! Thanks again Fred for reading my mind! ha ha. Cathy Wv..

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому +1

      Hi Cathy... here is an idea, I'm not sure if you have access to saw dust? Get a bottle of exterior/water proof elmers (or similar) glue... get a hand full of saw dust and squirt the glue into it until you make a gooey putty and pack that into the holes you can find. If you do that this time of year, you'll get ahead of them and it's what I'll be doing for the holes shown. They hatch at the end of summer and winter over in these tunnels... it's a game of wits :) Always nice to see your comments!

    Hi Fred, I just noticed one of these bees eating at my relatively new deck. I can see its rear end sticking out of the hole. I guess I need to fill the hole when the bee is away. Are you planning on doing any more honeybee videos this year? Yours are the best quality bee videos on UA-cam by far.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому +4

      Thanks for that comment and yes, I will be doing more honey bee videos this year, have one in the works, but because it involves some various stages of work by the bees, it takes some time to do.. but yes and thank you. Mush that bee while you can or you'll have a cheese house like my chickens do (">

      @adoptedchineseboy 7 років тому +4

      Oh u think just kill it? I've noticed 2 holes on my hand tail. 1 of them is the one where the bee is gnawing on. I kinda felt guilty just killing it because of all the problems surviving bees have had. I guess that has more to do with honey bees though?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  7 років тому +5

      You're right, the "at risk" bee species are the pollinators and general bumble bees and their sub-species. The Carpenter Bee is not at risk or in decline. You can also just encase all exterior wood with aluminum or vinyl siding to help deter them. If I want my rough cut wood structures to survive, I have to trap or kill the carpenter bees. Problem is, that the more I study them, the more destruction I allow so I can learn more, but that's not a wise approach :)

    I once owned a swingset in my backyard when I was younger. these things used to drill holes into every part of the swingset they can find. we tried everything. we plugged up the whole but they would chew through it within twenty four hours. we tried spraying them but since they are always in the the swingset we can't spray them. eventually the whole swingset collapsed due to damage from these things. Yeah. I hate these guys.

    I have a huge shiny looking bee in my yard, that was goes behind each periwinkle flower and makes a racket, sounding like it is attacking another insect, then finding out (with my lens app) it was actually a carpenter bee. My question is, why was it going behind each flower and making a racket like that? only thing I can come up with, is it was drilling a hole in the base of the flower to get at the nectar. thoughts? I have done some research and found nothing, thus far. UPDATE: LISTENED TO THE REST OF YOUR VIDEO, thanks, I have my answer :)

    I tried to caulk a bee hole in my porch beam, but they found it and chewed it out every time. The last time I caulked I waited just a few minutes then painted the whole beam, waited a bit and did a 2nd coat. It's like the caulk and paint hid the hole and I had no further problems with them.

    Wait that means males dont die after mating because if they died then there will not be a male bees protecting holes with eggs inside right?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  5 років тому +1

      Males will die shortly after mating, much of the defense males are still attempting to mate with a female. The guarding flights are intended to fend off other males, so it's actually sort of a mating competition. And the female will die soon after laying her eggs...

      I am taking care of a male carpenter bee that can't fly. I hold him all the time. He does not bite. I have held other male carpenter bees from off of flowers and they do not bite.
      They also pollinate like other bees. They are great pollinators. My bee drinks the nectar from the tops of his flowers like other bees do. If carpenter bees need to cut the flower to get the nectar, it must be very rarely and for only certain circumstances.
