I'm Canadian from Toronto and this is one of my favourite songs. The great thing about Canadian music is that it always represents Canadian values and with this song and video just re-iterates it. To me what Sam is getting at with song is that right now Detroit is struggling but let's get back to the basics and remember Detroit for who it really is. I love this song!! Makes me feel proud to be a Canadian!. Detroit is on it's way back up.
@@RPMZ11 If by that you mean we have a fast growing tech industry, then you are correct. If you are trying to say it is some dystopia, you are completely wrong. I was here back in the day, and I am here now, and lived many places in between, and Detroit is earning the title "the Renaissance City." It is like night and day from the 80s and 90s in many parts of the city. There still may be work to do, but we are one of the few places in this country not afraid of that.
Sam Roberts knows his history. He graduated from college with a Bachelor's in History. He's from Quebec. Quebec, Ontario and Detroit, down through New Orleans, were all part of what was known as New France, until about 1760. And Mr. Roberts wrote a song chronicling Detroit, pronounced as "Day-twah" in French. It's refreshing to have someone sing a positive song about Detroit for a change.
My grandfather told me that Detroit was called "New Paris". He might have made a mistake. (New France = New Paris. Eh?) Grandfather Gilbeaux was French Canadian but we grew up in Detroit City. OMG. His stories about the riots of '67. I was born in Detroit in March of '67 just before the riots.
@@ryanallen1396 You and Joker6.0 responded to my comment that I wrote in 2010, lol. I had to refresh my memory. Detroit was called "Paris of the West" in the late 19th, and early 20th century. I was born in late July of 1979 - exactly 12 years after the riots.
that's hilarious, because I never thought they were personally, like to me they're gods, I didn't know that so many people weren't into them or didn't know of them, yuh know what I mean?
My sons were going to a triple AAA high school. All their friends liked Sam Roberts music. My sons too, until I bought the CD and played it so much that I they hid my CD on me.
Detroit was my first real big city, after growing up in Seattle. I've lived and worked in industry extensively in Philly, NYC (all buroughs), Milwaukee. America is badass. Then. Now. Forever.
The city looks so much different now. They drive past so many landmarks and about half of them are completely restored. Detroit is one of the most exciting places to live right now... at least until the rich forces us all out. 600 dollar pieces of land going for 100000 k now. All of north end is owned by a few companies.
Yeah, it's funny-- I found this video back in 2010. Watched the bejeezus out of it and recognized 80-90% of the streets and buildings from when I used to work downtown. Almost 10 years later, I watch the same video and I note all the places that have been restored, redeveloped, or renovated--for the better, of course. But it's funny: the video intended to capture the grit and blight of a city in decay . . . and it inadvertently became kind of a time capsule of the "last days of decay" before a major surge of reinvestment, redevelopment, and and restoration began. Downtown is again alive and vibrant--which is a LONG WAY from when it was empty and desolate on nights and weekends--and Midtown continues to attract as the university and cultural center. The neighborhoods still need a lot of work, and hopefully their day will come as well. Here's to better days in The D.
jane doe: Yeah, that's what you get for your efforts. hahaha. Edmonton is like that now too, but not to the same extremes. A few more years and we'll be the coolest cities in our respective countries. I hope you bought in before everyone else caught-on.
The speaker at the very beginning was Jerry Cavanagh, who was mayor during the '67 riots. It came from a promotional film that was shot in '63 or '64 as part of Detroit's bid for the 1968 Olympics, which were awarded to Mexico City.
Some of those downtown Detroit walking clips looked like the same places Sixto Rodriguez walked in SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN! And great music too from BOTH artists by the way!
I'm Canadian; love Sam. Loved this song right off the bat. BUT... about 1:30 into it there's a couple of flashes of the Chrysler assembly line of **OBVIOUS** Barracudas! My mom had one in 1965! Another HUGE reason I love this song!!!
wow...great video, great song! love the old clips, I was just using one of those multie-guns for the lug nuts a couple weeks ago! Go Detroit!....and Flint ;-)
Man I know you guys from way way back....Well maybe not all of yas,but most.Anyway your one of the most underrated bands ever. Love your music and hope to see you soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great tune. I think the hockey clip at 3:30 is Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe (#9) scoring against Sam Robert's native Montreal Canadiens. '67 was the last ear of the Original Six teams of the NHL.
This album was released just before the economic recession in 08. While the extent of the damage wasn't yet clear, most people knew a crash was coming, and that the car companies were going to be hit pretty hard.
I have my ticket to see SRB perform in Detroit on Saturnday, 26 April, at the Fillmore. Greet me there, and I'll buy you a drink. (I'll be easy to spot.)

@in2itivelady Really? So I guess that's why Ford's products have been steadily improving and GM has been staging a big comeback? Not to mention Japanses quality has been slipping over the last decade quite noticably Exactly what industries are you referring to?
You're from Detroit, you're watching this and getting goosebumps in 2022!

Very cool B.
Now 11 years later the once great & safe T.O, is fast becoming a scene from Blade Runner.

Not at all. I was referring to the writer's Toronto.
I worked in Detroit/ Windsor for six years...97-03 and enjoyed it very much.

Who doesn't love a good dose of history? 💋👌

Anyway, being born in Detroit City in 1967, I love this song; not just because it's a great song, but nostalgic for me.

Went to school with his daughter Kelley, SMR, nw Detroit.
I visited Detroit from Toronto, and listened to this while I was walking around in the city. Lol. I went to see Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

I've loved this song for so long now! Great appearance at the SARS concert too 🥰
One of my favorite song writers SamRoberts. I had an industrial job and this gives me goosebumps.
This Canadian captured the essence of D-town better than any American.
Absolutely. Better than that awful Sammy Davis Jr song. This sounds like Detroit music.
one of my favourite songs by sam roberts
Some of those downtown Detroit walking clips looked like the same places Sixto Rodriguez walked in SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN! And great music too from BOTH artists by the way!
This song is incredible. So underrated!

There was no place like home. I was 7 years old during the riots and remember them well. Frightening times. Sadly it will never be what is once was.
No place ever is.
Detroit still rocks!
Looking for a song to listen to and I can't seem to think of anything cooler than Detroit '67
This song is amazing! The Sam Roberts Band is by far my favourite, and plus, Sam is hot. ;)

This song makes me want to drive around in Detroit, maybe ill do that in the spring.
I lived thru those riots. It was a frightening time.
A great example of how riding the tonic note builds tension.
Great tune. I think the hockey clip at 3:30 is Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe (#9) scoring against Sam Robert's native Montreal Canadiens. '67 was the last ear of the Original Six teams of the NHL.
I love Detroit
This song of 2008.

Many wishes i was working at the dertroit abattoir when Sam walked by. love animals
Love this! it's my personal fave of all Sam Roberts tunes. I wonder what made them write this. Seems like it has become the anthem of a dying city.
This album was released just before the economic recession in 08. While the extent of the damage wasn't yet clear, most people knew a crash was coming, and that the car companies were going to be hit pretty hard.
The opposite. There's a rebirth going on. Don't miss it.
