- Disappear and Disappeared are words which have taken on a more sinister meaning due to the actions of oppressive regimes, according to our researcher.

This man clearly is a cunning linguist, calculating every word and almost seems to taste them as they leave his mouth. Really fun to watch.
He has such a calming voice and phrasing.
Wait wait, he never talked about European equivalents like he said he would at 2:24. Or was that edited out?
2:44 - I was in Buenos Aires during one of these demonstrations. So sad
Wow very enlightening. Great video.
This subject is incredibly depressing...
But I find it really interesting how English and apparently Spanish, can work like that. This sense of the word would be impossible to translate to Finnish, I think. Partly because there already is a word for "to make disappear": hävittää. (From hävitä = "to disappear") It can in rare cases mean "to lose" too (then it sounds scolding, like "did you have to go lose the key!") but usually it's intentional. The typical implication is "to destroy completely".
"our researcher" is a pleasure to listen to. (not that the others aren't) I feel like my IQ was raised just by his wording, not even regardless of the (excellent) content! Thankyou. :)
Hmm, I'd enjoy hearing more on the subject but this was interesting indeed. The paralell changes in different languages is fascinating.
masterful eloquence
The practise of converting adjectives into nouns on the fly, as it were, is a common one in both Dutch and German.
THIS MAN ALMOST MADE ME LOSE MY MIND BECAUSE OF THE WAY HE TALKS W T F
There is a bitter humor in the transition from being an intransitive verb to a transitive one, isn't there? As when we say, as so often happens in detention, "That fellow was suicided" - murdered, and the murder covered up by claiming the fellow committed suicide...
@FFSray A linguist would have a field day with this sentence, not grammatically but concerning its denotation.
Actually the positively funniest thing I've read in a while! :) You win one 'thumb up'.
Cool video btw, I like how an intelligent and learned person can analyse things and make them relevant when normal people don't even notice that there is something more meaningful about those things.
When I saw the title, I was hoping you'd cover the aspect of this word--I'm fascinated by the transitive verb of disappear. It's a very odd use.
This was an interesting topic. can you do one on the word kidnap, I've always assumed this had something to do with people stealing children.
@RavnoUK this channel is about language
@Doomside I guess is not quite "right" to get into those topics in a science channel. But we all know something like that.. basically any militar ditactator in europe (i.e Franco in Spain) has done this.
This new definition of "disappear" is VERY Orwellian. Reminds me of Winston Smith's fear of being vapourized.
make some videos of hard words such as contentious
I'd rather see those regimes disappear in the intransitive sense.

I listened to this song growing up and only learned of its meaning much later.
@puretroubleman Right sorry.
The catholic church were complicit.
