Jimmy Connors vs Aaron Krickstein in a five-set thriller! | US Open 1991 Round 4

- At the end of 1990, Jimmy Connors had wrist surgery. He came to the US Open in 1991 as a wildcard, ranked No. 174 in the world. Across an unforgettable Labor Day afternoon, Connors collided with fellow American Aaron Krickstein in the round of 16, and seldom if ever has a US Open audience been so enthralled over the course of a long match. That crowd in Louis Armstrong Stadium was riveted from beginning to end, and only a scant few were cheering for the earnest and likable Krickstein. Nearly everyone else was rooting unabashedly for Connors, who was orchestrating the fans with fist-pumping, imploring them to raise the level of their appreciation whenever he needed the psychological boost.

Krickstein´s complete backhand-side was such a tragedy!
Notice the they totally eliminated the argument between Connors and the Referee at the 19:25 mark, when after Krickstein said that Jimmy hit a ball wide, there was no call until a short time went by and then the Ref called it out! Connors then went to the Referee and called him "a bum" and said he was playing his guts out at 39 years old and the Ref was "doing that?" He told him to leave and this was the defining moment when the crowd from there on in were all in favor of Connors winning.
Very memorable...one of the most physical and grueling matches I've ever seen.
Federer have the age of Jimbo on this video. I hope he can do something big too at that age!
For some reason, Connors didn't speak to Krickstein for decades after this, despite the fact that they'd been good friends before.

I thoght it was the other way round
@@robtatum5277 It was yeah
@@robtatum5277 Na, Krickstein said they were practicing pretty regular together in California before this, and after this Jimmy never contacted him again lol
Aaron will only be remembered for one thing: losing this match 😂
47:08 Coolest clap ever
We expected the full match..
Remember this game...it was crazy. Like Jimbo😘
Krick won the rematch and it was a classy charity event!
Thank you so muchhhhhhhhh
I played on these courts. They were fast... not super fast like back in those days, but much faster than today's...
I was there that day sitting in the upper bowl. Even from the nosebleeds, you see that Krickstein was pensive off his patented forehand and he didn’t have much of a backhand. Plus Jimmy’s flat, low and grind away game just took Aaron out.

The line calls were definitely on Connors side. It really cost Krick a few games!
No idea what the score is: the movie
lol
Hasn't Aaron had enough of this match?

Interesting at 3:25 mcenroe enters the commentary and is asked who he expects to win. Even though krickstein is up 4-1, he predicts connors. Krickstein had clearly read the book on how some played connors: no pace slice backhands, looping topsin forehands with no pace either and let connors over hit. Unfortunately, Krickstein ends up being a bit too passive and reactive and jimmy starts to dictate. Remember watching this on tv at the time and like most, was amazed and inspired by that old connors magic. Watching at the end, one feels for Kricksteins dad who has to witness his son slowly being outdone with the crowd cheering so wildly for connors.
Jimmy should still be using the famous Wilson T-2000
Well, Wilson didn't manufacture the T-2000 anymore... if they had continued, I guess Jimmy would have used it longer than late 1986... I think he wasn't officially endorsed by them when he returned to the T-2000 in early 1985 after a brief period of using the Wilson Pro Staff..
51:12! Great!
is it raining?
Sound of camera shutters
Kricky!
Venus vs davenport 2004 plz
I didn’t get to watch this match live, thanks to the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Ok. Fine
Then Courier just dismantled Connors
Gen X
😀
Courier doesn't compare to Connors.
Then Edberg dismantled Courier.
@@blake7871 ...whom Connors dismantled two years previously in '89!
@@benphilips7235 Yeah he did. Crazy how that works.
No, he played Paul Haarhuis next and won that too.
It looks like bullying.
We expected the full match..
exactly!! I keep saying to them that they are disrespecting Connors, no full matches, just highlights! they're showing plenty of RN and SW grrrr!! greatest fighter Connors was!!
I don't think they have the cottage of the full match
We'll see what we can do! With everyone working remotely and also working with old matches on tape it's tricky. But thanks for the feedback - it's good to know there's appetite for full matches. Watch this space! 👍
@@usta thank you!! Federer v Hewitt 2004 @60fps would be awesome too! lol
