    So I decided to stop at the florescent color step for a few reasons. 1) Right now the florescent colors are beyond expensive. 2) I wasn't confident I could do the florescence good enough and I didn't want to ruin all my hard work and 3) I decided I liked the non-florescent look better anyways. I've one more NPC, the Hill Troll, and then it's on to the fellowship minis. After that, I have to two small expansions to do. I also have War of the Ring coming (the Ares board game) and I've Hexploreit Volume 3 to paint as well. I'm really happy with the results so far. Thank you Sorastro!!!!!

    I love your videos - they are very informative, and I also find them relaxing to watch. Except this one! The background music, while perfectly suited to the subject, set my nerves on edge the whole time! The music on the other LotR videos is calm and autumnal, and great to hear at the end of a long day. Thanks for all your hard work!

      If you really want to see some of his dry-brushing sorcery (and when/if you watch the videos you'll understand why I call it) check his guides for the Star Wars Repulsor Tank, AT-ST and Snowspeeder.

      @@TheRunesmythe: I understand, I watched those. Perhaps to me is the different kind of applications that make the difference. Apparently in my mind drybrushing a cloak is totally different from drybrushing a vehicle 😂. I know, minds can be weird. But still thanks, I'll watch them again and try to combine the techniques into my miniatures.

      @@Sorastro I think I noticed something and would like your thoughts. The wight that was magenta changed to orange really captured my eye. I don't have a lot of experience with those specific florescent paints, but, think you gave me what my son calls a "brainspark." (Pretty sure its from a show he watches.) Perhaps if they were layered according to proximity, the way the highlights were, it would increase the illusion. In the example of the orange one (even though possibly unintentional) you have red furthest from the source, then orange as it gets closer, finally white-orange closest. I think that would also work with the green one; yellow to yellow green to green. I have some florescent paints coming soon and can't wait to try some of these out. Thanks as always for the inspiration.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 років тому +1

      Hey Rob - I think varying the tone of the fluorescent tones would work nicely! I guess it would make sense to start with a light glaze of the yellow - focusing around the skull area, then apply the blue or green, pushing more to the outlying areas, and overlapping with the yellow to create a transition..? :)

    Amazing job on the OSL or, to use the technical term, Glowy Bits (TM). That works really well - I'd never thought of using the flourescent colours for that. Also the Orange over the Magenta works better than I think either single colour would have. You need to be careful mixing too much white into them tho as they come a bit close to the tone of the light source in places, but still excellent. The one thing I am not sure about is rust and verdigris on the same metal. It looks ok, but I think a much darker metal with just verdigris would look more convincing. Or a very rusty Steel instead.

    You mention that there is nothing in the lore to suggest the glow, but when the hobbits were captured by the wight in the barrow downs there was mention of a greenish glow within the barrow. As there was no mention of a source of the glow and as the only unnatural thing within the barrow was the wight it stands to reason that the wight could very well have been the source of the green glow. 💀

    As always a brilliant painting tutorial, with a fantastic eye for detail. I believe you misspoke when you were detailing the sword. As bronze would not rust, but would tarnish and/or corrode. I'm not sure what part of the sword you were suggesting was rusting, and therefore made of iron? Please and thank you for any clarification in advance.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 років тому

      Thanks Mike! You are of course correct about bronze not rusting. Call it corrosion if you like, but it's the aesthetic effect I was after - a bit like you can see here: www.google.com/search?q=bronze+sword&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwil-cStopHiAhUK2-AKHX1-CRcQ2-cCegQIABAC&oq=bronze+sword&gs_l=mobile-gws-wiz-img.3..0l5.35105.40092..40847...2.0..0.244.1171.9j2j1......0....1.......5..35i39j0i67.ZBn4leRf9Xs&ei=apfVXKWcMIq2gwf9_KW4AQ&bih=718&biw=412&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=ivn&safe=strict&hl=en-GB#imgrc=fdD6ekQASl-I9M

    have you seen the new Citadel Contrast Paints? If so what do you think?
    Too me they look interesting but from what i have seen it is recommended that you use the new contrast undercoat/primer. In the back of my mind i am a little worried that they are just trying to sell more primer by making a thicker wash adding extra flow aid.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 років тому

      Hi John! I've had a quick look at them. I'd be interested in trying them out over different coloured base tones to see what variations of hue are possible, or perhaps trying throwing some Shades on top, because used on their own they don't produce any variety of tone (just value). Still, could be useful tool in the armoury when speed painting large numbers perhaps... :)

    Great work. When I do zenithal highlight I find that in order for it to have any effect I have to have the paint so much thinned that the black/white is showing through a lot. Feels easier to just basecoat with AB and make a highlight with a lighter base coat from above. What should I change?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 років тому

      Thank you! I imagine your best approach might depend on what you're painting; applying a base colour and highlights with an airbrush sure makes sense for a large creature that is mostly one colour perhaps, and I bet you could produce some really easy and effective OSL with the airbrush too! I find going with the zenithal highlights and thin base colours is a nice way to batch paint large numbers to an OK table-top standard however - it just takes a bit of experimentation to get a consistency you're happy with. And of course - as you've noticed - the tones won't be as vibrant as when applying opaque base colours because some of the black and white will (and should) show through - therein lies the trade off between speed and quality, but I do find the Citadel Shades go some way to offsetting that desaturated look however... :)

      Thank you! I do often use a wet palette, but chose to keep things simple for this series as it's aimed more for beginner painters. When you zenithal do you do the white as a dry brush because of the issues in getting a smooth coat with a rattle can or is it to give yourself more control? Do you prefer the rattle can or airbrush?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 років тому

      Hi John! I usually provide the zenithal highlights with an airbrush because the results are smoother than when using a rattle can (although rattle cans are OK if you don't have an airbrush).
