  • I can never say enough how much I appreciate all the support from the people on Patreon and all of you who watch my videos! I like to do video chats with my Patreon community and give them the most up-to-date updates from the trail, but since I think other people may have some of the same questions I still want to share some of the information from these Q&A's with everyone. So as my regular CDT episodes catch up, I'll post an edited version of each Q&A publicly on UA-cam just like I did from the PCT.
    It can be difficult to find reliable WIFI from the trail, but I hope to do these more in the near future. If you want to participate in the next Q&A head over to / homemadewanderlust . Every patron, no matter how much you pledge will have access to all these Q&A's, and I will try to give as much notice as possible before they start. Hope you enjoy and thank you again so much for watching this channel!
    If you'd rather not sit through the whole video I made a little table of contents below so you can click through the topics that interest you.

    “Well hello there darlin”. Haha. I’ve never commented before, but I’ve watched every single video you’ve made. Most of them at least twice. Your videos (and others) have gotten me obsessed with hiking the AT and I’m planning to start NoBo next March. I live in rural upstate NY. Most people don’t know that NY state has one of the biggest wilderness areas in the nation, bigger than Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Canyon and great Smokies COMBINED. When you want to summit the highest peak in NY state, I would love to be you’re guide. It’s a majestic mountain surrounded by numerous other beautiful mountains. Anyways.... we are BIG FANS and we wait every week for your next video. Can’t wait to hear about that mountain lion! Be safe. YOU ARE AMAZING

    I live on the eastern edge of the South San Juan Mountains and it is an extremely dry year with fire restrictions already in place in many parts of the forest. I don't think you'll have much trouble. Snow pack at 10% of normal in much of the San Juans.

    Does anyone like climbs? Hehe. When my partner and I hiked the Routeburn (NZ) last year he had some heart problems and I had some knee problems. Neither of these were news to us. But the way it turned out was a bit funny - I loved the uphills and hated the downhills, and he hated uphills and love the downhills hence we rarely walked together except on ridges, through valleys or when he were supporting each other through these trials. A wonderful experience. Thank you for making that comment Jess which brought those memories to the fore.

    Beautiful country for camping out. Boiling will kill anything bad in the water. Conventional wisdom is that boiled water is safe from the point that it starts a rolling boil, but some people like to boil it for several minutes. Plain chlorine bleach (unscented, 5% sodium hypochlorite solution) will also kill any of the bad stuff. Again, conventional wisdom is 4-8 drops per gallon (1-2 drops per quart or liter), depending on the water source and clarity. Bleach works pretty fast - water should be safe to drink within 30 minutes. Potable Aqua tabs also do a very good job and work in 30 minutes. Their drawback is the taste and color they impart to the water, which some people don't care for. It's never stopped me from drinking it, however - whenever I had to use them, getting safe water was far more important than the flavor. Best wishes for your hike. Stay safe out there. Happy Trails.

    Tell the people a the prescription counter in drug store what you need to do, and ask for help. They have all kinds of bottles etc. A pill bottle packed tight with cotton balls will keep bleach from spilling, push down on cotton and liquid will appear. I like to whittle a stick so its
    clean. If you tap the stick it will shed a drop. if the bottle is glass wrap with tape cushion it. This also gives you tape to use for repairs.

    Colorado, especially southwest CO, is facing a drought. That is, snowpack is way below normal, maybe down to 33% in the San Juans. From what I understand, almost all snow is gone there now. The problem will not be too much snow but finding enough water to drink.

    2 drops for a liter for clear water, 4 drops for cloudy water. Shake it up and loosen the cap so the water sloshes over the threads then tighten the cap. Wait 45 min to 1hour then is safe.

    W used tablets when I was a kid and only had lake water to drink. The idea about digging a hole near the water and letting it filter is a good one I thing it is a coyote hole or something? Then purify it. (Yes I know this is an old post im just sort of talking to the TV.)

    Folks covered how to treat water with bleach well. The only point I did not see made is bleach degrades relatively quick so it is better to use unscented plain bleach that is less than 6 months old otherwise one does not know if 2 drops per liter and smell test are effective.

    Iodine is a more effective water purifier than bleach; when I was in Nepal I used it to purify the Holy waters of the Sun Kosi for 10 days ie waste disposal system ; It worked really well but it does leave a taste. A filter is a much better option get one as soon as you can..

      Spurious Effect she made a comment about that Perk did share his filter but she felt like he was concerned about that so she chose the other method. Plus they all don’t stay together hiking and I’m sure it’s a pain to switch it back and forth. You usually leave it attached to your bottle while hiking for easier drinking.

    This.. is a timely task, but, if your tired of warm water, at night or day.. stroke up a fire, get some charcoal, cut the bottom off a Gatorade or water bottle.. put cool charcoal in bottle, 1/4 way, sand 1/4 way, gravel 1/4 way.. pour water into bottle lety drain into another container and repeat 4.. to 5.. times until clear and it will clear.."crystal clear" then it will be almost as pure as a sawyer.. its... a natural charcoal filter.. time tested mountain man approved!

    You keep mentioning that tabs take too long to purify water. You’ve said they take 4 hours to work, but I thought that was to get rid of everything, including viruses. But a sawyer doesn’t get rid of viruses either. I thought tabs only took about 1/2 hour to purify to the level of a sawyer? Idk though

    • @KuntryRD
      @KuntryRD 6 років тому +1

      The tabs get rid of virus and bacteria very quickly, about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. Giardia and cryptosporidium take up to 4 hours depending on water temp and clarity.

    Hey Dixie; CDC they basically suggest 2 drops per quart/liter of 6% bleach and let stand for 30 min or double the time if water is colder than 77deg. ////if using Iodine @2% five drop per quart/liter stand times same as bleach......... best way is to get a rolling boil of water for 1min if below 6500ft or 3 min if above 6500ft ! ...any method needs the time to kill the bacterias or cool to drink , so patience is safer ! cheers!... mark real good your visine /bleack bottle!!!

    As a user, I'm curious why your not using you're filter just because it froze. Is there a reason it won't work after it freezes. Good to know. Great luck and fun wishes for you.

    • @heathermac01
      @heathermac01 6 років тому +2

      The Sawyer squeeze works by passing water through microtubules which are small enough to exclude bacteria and protozoa and other things that are larger than water molecules. Because freezing causes water to expand, freezing the Sawyer can compromise the structural integrity of the filter by breaking the microtubules. This causes a loss of ability to exclude undesirable microorganisms.

    Question I’ve had watching all your thru hikes.. it seems like people split up a lot but always catch each other so it’s odd to me you split up.. seems more dangerous in all ways to hike alone. Why don’t people just stay together on the trail? like why would perk keep going when he has the water source if he isn’t planning to finish faster or anything?

    Morning Dixie! I have a technical question for you or anyone who knows about these things. I want to do a live q and a for my patrons eventually, but i have no idea how. Is it an option in Patreon I'm just not seeing, or do you use some other app for it?

      RiverWulf On the Road unfortunately you can’t technically do it through Patreon. This was a livestream on UA-cam with the privacy set to unlisted. Only people with the link can watch, so just post the link to Patreon before you go live. You could also stream through Facebook or Periscope if you want but I don’t know much about that.

    Welcome to the Rockies. They are not the Sierras or the Appalachians. Always prep for a freeze. Shoes..filters in your bag.

    Video was out of focus. Maybe because it was Live? Stay safe out there. :)
