Very good performance, especially from Whitehorn, in my opinion better than the Union Chapel one, at least on par with the album version.
This is such a great piece of music ! The master Matthew Fisher gave Procol Harum a level needed today. Procol Harum will live a long time because their ( Gary & Keith)material was brought to such an enduring level because of all the great musicians tthrough the years and continue now! Thanks so much for uploading this! I hope alot of people get to hear this and alot others!
I've heard 20+ live performances of this tour de force, and Maestro Whitehorn always lays in new variations; which adds excitement in the course of the moment and ensures that Weisselklenzenacht never grows stale. However, in this case I think he mixes in just a bit too much fiddlery, which breaks up the flow and detracts from the sheer majesty of the studio version where every single note is meaningful and perfectly to the point. This is exactly what the Master of Majesty, Mr. David Gilmour, Sir, never does on Comfortably Numb - his variations are always interesting but also always subtle, close to the core and following the pace and flow of The Big[gest] Solo, never losing the momentum or the fascination of the audience. And this is what M. Whitehorn achieves so perfectly in the studio version of WKA.
Wow! I have heard several live performances of this piece of music and I have to say that this one may top them all. Geoff Whitehorn's performance is a STUNNING departure from his original and from subsequent live interpretations. A tour de force!!!!!
Have to disagree.The Union Chapel version is technically and musically superior in my opinion. Plus the setting and background adds that extra special edge to the performance.
A wonderful piece...and played with such sensitivity, allowing for the majestic climax of Whitehorn's guitar.

The performance is very good and Whitehorns play in Mainz was much better than at the Union Chapel.

Union Chapel is miles better than this and is maybe better than the recoded version - I certainly prefer the two chords at the end and not one on the CD. One or two occasions here when Geoff loses his way and is off-key. And a couple of over-twiddly bits too.
Agreed. The Union Chapel is far more polished in all areas and closer to the original except for the climax which surpasses the studio version. It’s the ‘short intermission for a beer’ as they walk off the stage which clinches it for me. Sums up the ethos of the band and it’s affinity with their audiences wherever they played. RIP Gary Brooker MBE and long the music of Procol Harum and Matthew Fisher be played and heard.
