Reason for Gambit's wrong name & stage: SNES version came out about a year before the Genesis. During development of the SNES game, Gambit was barely a known character (used as the "new mutant" that the comics were pushing) with barely any backstory revealed yet. At the time of the game being developed, Remy's last name was unknown, but the comics _had_ revealed that he was "married" to Bella Donna Boudreaux. Which is also why Gambit's stages are so random - the devs knew he used poker cards, so using cards and chess/gaming for his stage was all they had. Oh, and at least on the SNES game there's a stupidly easy way to grab 40+ lives in the 1st Gambit stage, and since everyone shares lives...
oh yeah I remember that trick was in one of my old Nintendo powers, you were suppose to jump into this empty gap in the top part of the screen and collect a TON of stars, this way you can collect 1 ups until the death wheel catches you but the more lives you get more then makes up for it lol
also I suppose the reason Gambit's cards don't work like they do in the comics (I always thought it was weird how they flop around like he's LITERALLY throwing cards) is due to this new factor as well?
Criminally underrated. Thank you guys for keeping this sort of thing alive, not ridiculously polished although very well-presented and not fake, it’s clearly a couple of friends having a great time. Reminds me of better times here on UA-cam lol
Yeah it's a bit silly when people making fun of old games aspire toward Hollywood-tier production values when their content is basically "doesn't this pixelated enemy kinda look like a hotdog?"
I'm not sure how intentional this is, but this show gives me super strong early UA-cam vibes, in an absolutely good way! We're talking about shows from nearly 20 years ago, like early AVGN, LGR, and so forth, so as weird as it may seem I'm nostalgic for those type of nostalgia videos. Over the years a lot of youtubers have tried to copy or just recapture that style, and the thing that was always missing to me is a true sense of discovery: a lot of times those videos were our first introduction to these games, so they were genuinely informative (and at that time gameplay videos were not yet a thing), so seeing somebody to try and do yet another video on how hard TMNT on NES was, or how bad LJN games are, etc. just felt rehashed and uninteresting. Now THIS series recaptures the humor in its skits but also manages to shine light on details I never knew about these games by featuring direct comparisons like I've never seen in some cases... even detailed sites like Wikis often fail to really point to gameplay details or unlockable content instead being 99% about lore! While gameplay videos most of the times are simply one single game from start to finish without intentionally exploring details or additional content and modes (like it's incredibly rare to find gameplay videos on multiplayer modes or secret content in these older games)
We’d be stoked if you checked out our channel! Our guy Paul experiences most of the games for the first time, and I agree, it’s tougher to experience that sense of discovery these days.
“You will _not_ have happiness as long as I live.” -Pat. Best line *ever!* Really wish y’all could go back and redo some of the older episodes and present them in the current review format.
Gambit refers to the "Queen's Gambit" in chess, so its not as random as it seems. The queens gambit is an opening move in which a pawn is to be sacrificed.... the opposing player can accept or deny the gambit and the match goes one of two ways..
The SNES OST is not only my favorite Tim and Geoff Follin work, it's also one of my favorite video game OSTs of all the time, Gambit's level theme and Spider Man's level theme are my favorite tracks. Oh, and great video guy!
Oh, I totally agree with that, it’s not even close the SNES version absolutely stomps a mud hole in the Sega version and walks it dry especially in the graphics and audio department. There is simply no contest here if this was a boxing match that have to stop the match at the end of the first round 😂😂😂
Back in 1993, a new kid came to my school. He was the son of Bolivia's ambassador in my country. One day he invited me and some other classmates to his fancy house to play with his SNES. I remember it exactly: he had Axelay, Mario World, WrestleMania and this game. I was specially amazed by Axelay and Arcade's Revenge and at the time my family didn't have the money to buy me a SNES. I promised myself that in the future I would get the console along with those games, and I did. Now I have a huge collection and of course, I always spare some time to play my beloved SNES cartridges.
I don't think the Follin bros. worked on the music for the Genesis version (and it shows). In the credits, Sound Images is listed for music instead of them.
A single Wasp sting is better than a single Bee sting. Wasps deliver less of their poison in a single sting, but can repeatedly sting. Bees can only sting once, ripping their stinger out in the process leading to the bee eventually dying. After the bee’s stinger has been ripped out of it’s bee-hind what remains continues to pump out the toxins every time it’s disturbed. You need to use the backside of a knife or some other straight edged object to scrape the stinger off, DO NOT use tweezers as it can cause the venom sack to release even more of the poison.
You guys keep getting even better and Weird Al video at the end used up my capacity for creativity! But seriously if you split this video into several separate ones all of them would make it big on TikTok or whatever trends now. Thank you for another genius episode!
This channel really IS the reason I may grab a particular title for one console over another, and by the numbers, I'm curious as to how many others are similarly influenced. Thats so many markets shifted due to the information provided and the depth of the reviews leading to a solid choice.
He's not _too_ bad. You just need to learn the stage to know where the upcoming walls to claw through are. Juggernaut _requires_ 25 anvils to be dropped on his head - and they _must_ hit him on screen from my play experience. So, it's a delicate balance of staying close enough for the anvils to hit from above yet giving yourself enough room & time to claw through the obstacle walls - a claw swipe to the head will slow him down for a moment. While understanding that you will take all-but mandatory hits from the acid cream pies from the Obnoxio robots. Once you've hit him with 25 anvils, claw him to death.
@@ryandiggs750 the issue is that the damn anvils don't always drop when slashed and even when I go back to slash at them nothing happens. The hit detection is crap on those so by the time I make it to the end of the stage at least 2 anvils did not drop on him. I even made a cheat code (Game Genie) that kills everything in 1 hit and he still has some part of him in code where he still comes at you and you die. I'll see if I can just make a code to stop or slow him down more BUT those damn anvils not being hittable makes this a pure luck thing.
I love you sketches guys! Make me happy as always, also the next one is Art of Fighting! On Genesis ver you have the cutscenes and gameplay more like the arcade, that episode is gonna be good! Edit: you forgot to say on the Snes version Spiderman says a voice when he get hit

5:30 This is, because you are playing on a modern display. On CRT these transparency effects looked much more like on SNES. So you can't blame them back in the day. Off course if you want keep playing these games without special filter or monitor, then its an issue. But its not an issue with the game itself, because you are playing the game in a way it was not intended.
Really wish you guys were still using Composite video for the graphics comparisons. But yeah you nailed this! The joint was always better on Super NES.
Woke up this morning to see the new vid…that opening skit legit had me howling. Great start to the morning! I have been waiting for you guys to cover this game
*plays guitar* “What? That’s it! Are we doing DIS!?” 😂😂😂 Also, no matter which consoles music you listen to…both are so good! I still rock out to them today. Great episode.
You know, the more I think about it, Fraiser playing The Beast was a peak casting choice... but NOW the idea of a Danny Devito Wolverine is something I never knew I needed. Feels like heracy as an Aussie not to prop up Hugh Jackman, but that opening skit was fantastic. Also I was cackling at "No, you will NOT have happiness." 😂

Finally! Glad you guys review this game for both SNES and Genesis. Yes I remember playing this as a kid even my brother on the SNES version and yes it's incredibly hard for all characters especially Storm's stage that took us months or years to beat this game. To this day, we STILL haven't beaten the game we still got the copy of the game but yeah. Oh yeah I even bought a Sega Genesis as well and I even bought the complete in box of Spiderman X-Men Arcade's Revenge it still hard as the SNES version. Also, I agree on the music by Geoff and Tim Follin who made the music, sounds freaking amazing yes my number one favorite is Cyclops' Stage, I even like Wolverine's Stage with the creepy clown music in the background in the music and Storm's stage with a dark ambient music that felt like your in underwater. Anyways yeah I'm so happy you guys review this game from my childhood, thanks guys keep rockin' and keep up making other SNES & Genesis reviews.
What's funny about the "exclusive SNES music tracks" for Storm and Wolverine, is that the Mega Drive version DOES ACTUALLY HAVE THEM, but don't use them for some strange reason. Maybe the developers thought the Mega Drive renditions weren't good enough and prefered to reuse the other tracks from Cyclos and Gambit, but as a matter of fact, they are present within the code of the Mega Drive version and can be enabled/used through hacking. ua-cam.com/video/ddUxPyNkOfU/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/oJP305xiyls/v-deo.html
Nice episode cover of this unique Marvel game from the 90’s. Great job spoofing both Saturday Night Live and Weird Al as you capture the moments of them very well. Keep up your wonderful work on these fantastic videos.
Well I for one, old as I am, actually like the skits so THERE. Also, a point in favor of the skit here over the game, is that the celebrity cameos at least felt like they had some thought put into how they could be as "SNL-dull" as possible. The game feels like each level isn't like, SUPER-adapted to bring out the best in each character. And the concept of a game where you just control a character per level feels like it wouldn't really satisfy any fans- just wet their appetite, and then leave them high and dry.
First Happy Birthday Dan! Second I played the Genesis version of this game and I only passed Spider Man’s sections while finding the other stages (besides Wolverine’s) to be difficult. Last it feels like every time I have a crappy day and you upload a new episode, I feel better, thank you!
"...you will not have happiness..." So good!!! Happy birthday and thanks for another fun video. The lack of love for the player makes me believe that if I had access to this game back then I would have played it exactly twice and then never again. I never liked the BS towards the player. OK ok, I rarely liked platformers, but still... Otherwise, it looks interesting with the diversity and the vibrant look. As a home computer guy at the time, I never even knew of this, still, cool. BTW, is it me or you guys are getting even better at acting? Well done.
Wow! Even a cameo by Led Zeppelin. Didn't see that coming. And I've been on a Zep kick for a few days, so that's a fun coincidence. The music used for the conclusion kind of reminded me of Boston. And that reminds me how Biker Mice from Mars has a track that is a SNES adaptation of Riding on the Wind from Judas Priest. So all that is fun, which is more than seems to be the case for this game. As for the game, I'd say in some cases that missing sound effects are better than bad ones, but that's a small thing. This game is really odd. It was unimpressive when it came out. I had a Genesis already, and the Spider-Man game from Sega looked amazing to me at the time. This one, not so much. I recognize some of the sprites from the Wolverine game on the NES. I don't know if this one was originally intended for the NES, and then it was switched, or they used the NES sprites as a starting point just to cut down development time. The 8-bit ports of this game came later, so I doubt it was done for that reason. But I was really into Spider-Man and X-Men when this came out, and I just had no interest in this game just from seeing the advertising. I'm surprised the music turned out pretty good.
@@ConsoleWars I'm getting sentimental in my old age and it's nice to see good old channels like yourselves still going strong. There are a lot of old gaming UA-camrs who are kinda fizzling out or changing the way they do things from what originally made their channel special. I hope to see some more Greg cameos in the future. The Pat comment regarding " you will not have happiness as long as I live" was GOLD. Anyways.... Thank you.
1:59, plus that's very clever considering what he does. 3:14, the commercial on the other hand..is BADASS. 14:00, whooooooa!!! With a game like this, a password is welome.
Interesting that they didn't use different themes for each characters in the actual gameplay, since they're present in the game. Anyways, great episode as usual.
You guys are hitting it out the ballpark loving the content that SNL skit LOL. I remember playing the heck out of this game back in the day an you guys are right how hard this game is. A save feature or checkpoints was a must to have for this game. Man the Weird AL song was on point an I am drinking Bacardi right now LOL AWESOME VID GUYS
As a kid I mainly knew about this game from an ad on the VHS for the Pryde of The X-Men cartoon. Of course not having an SNES or Genesis at the time I wouldn't have had any idea on just how difficult this game actually was. Will look forward to your eventual console war on The Death and Return of Superman. I'll just say already that I think that game's soundtrack is better on the... Super Nintendo.
Nintendo won with LJN power, we need a LJN power magazine right now. Love this episode guys, glad I got to catch up on this one :D stay cool and safe guys. Also love hearing your own music n parody music again
Great episode. I used to have the SNES game, but I can never beat any of the levels after the "Spider-Man" Security stage. I haven't watched modern SNL, but I can already say, the "SNL" skit here is a crap load better than a majority of the modern skits on that show (even though some stand out). Also great "Weird Al" bit, cool to see a parody of "New York" by Alicia Keys.
You guys are Gems man. 💎 sometimes its not even about the games because ive never played this but your analysis and banter is always refreshingly hilarious
I forgot where I read it (it might have been Wizard Magazine), but when using her lightning powers, Storm's powers are kinda work similar to that of an electric eel. So, basically, if an eel doesn't harm itself when using its powers, neither does Storm.
I remember renting this on SNES as a kid, I wanted to like it so bad, but just couldn't get into it. The music is awesome though. Great episode as always guys. I do have another suggestion, how about Championship Pool or Side Pocket? One of the pool games on SNES and Genesis. That could be fun.
7:08 why does it look as if the background images are disjointed? As if someone was combining the second part of the image (with some overlap) but didn't bring it all the way in...

As a home computer guy at the time, I never even knew of this, still, cool.
BTW, is it me or you guys are getting even better at acting? Well done.
“You will not have happiness “ was an ad lib that was too good to cut.
@@ConsoleWars Good choice to keep it. :)
That was a good episode! I like the skits in this video! Can’t wait for the next episode!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool episode guys
Another awesome episode.
I always look forward to your content, keep it up!
Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Happy Birthday Dan! Glad I got to finally watch this on your birthday! Great episode!
Also can't wait for the next one for some "callbacks" ;)
This was hilarious!
Keep up the great work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good god this channel deserves more love
Even though the SNES version won, nobody wins when playing this game.
Wow, you guys killed it with this one! Love yall, keep it up 👏🏾
Thank you kindly
if you think about it. the graphics between xbox and playstation now are more similar than genesis and snes. i wish I was a kid again
Three wins in a row!? We're back in the game, baby!!
Excellent review, guys. How about a review on the SNES and Genesis ports of Terminator 2: Judgment Day? Time for a "Worst Game" episode, perhaps?
Danny Devito as Wolverine!?!? 😅🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
You were expecting Peter Dinklage?
I wonder how Storm's stage looks on a CRT, where the dithering can look really cool
Nintendo won with LJN power, we need a LJN power magazine right now.
Love this episode guys, glad I got to catch up on this one :D stay cool and safe guys.
Also love hearing your own music n parody music again
LJN makes bad games sadly
Great episode. I used to have the SNES game, but I can never beat any of the levels after the "Spider-Man" Security stage. I haven't watched modern SNL, but I can already say, the "SNL" skit here is a crap load better than a majority of the modern skits on that show (even though some stand out). Also great "Weird Al" bit, cool to see a parody of "New York" by Alicia Keys.
Glad you enjoyed it
Somebody call Weird Al; I think we have his next song parody! 😆
Welcome back
I wish more than anything that I could get more people to enjoy the brilliance over your channel. This deserve at least five times as many video.
Thank you so much!
First Console Wars Video of 2024
And Now I'm Gonna watch it 😁👍
It took this video to get me off my butt and start working on a cover of the title screen. Thanks for the motivation!
Sweet! I would love to hear it
SNL has two jokes. Either one person is crazy and everybody else is sane. Or one person is sane and everybody else is crazy.
🤔 ha
You guys are Gems man. 💎 sometimes its not even about the games because ive never played this but your analysis and banter is always refreshingly hilarious
Thank you!
...Wait, how can Storm use her lightnings UNDER WATER?? Wouldn't she pretty much kill herself by doing that?
I forgot where I read it (it might have been Wizard Magazine), but when using her lightning powers, Storm's powers are kinda work similar to that of an electric eel. So, basically, if an eel doesn't harm itself when using its powers, neither does Storm.
@@RocKnight11 I see. Thank you for the explanation!
Love that Super Nintendo Tim Follin guitar
I remember renting this on SNES as a kid, I wanted to like it so bad, but just couldn't get into it. The music is awesome though. Great episode as always guys. I do have another suggestion, how about Championship Pool or Side Pocket? One of the pool games on SNES and Genesis. That could be fun.
It had AWESOME music thouhh....ya know...for the SUPER NINTENDO.
You guys give me hope for New Jersey.
7:08 why does it look as if the background images are disjointed? As if someone was combining the second part of the image (with some overlap) but didn't bring it all the way in...
Software Creations definitely got their practice in on this game on the music front before making Plok for the SNES
You guys are gonna win another Emmy this year, I know it!
🤞
I actually prefer the dying and breathing sounds on Genesis.
That Weird al impression is JUST good enough to sound legit and i absolutely love it, its hilarious, and sounds like something hed actually do lol
Thank you!
Best way to start my morning🎉
Morning!
Love this one. You guys are so awesome. Keep it up.
Thank you!
Does anybody know what movie/show had the jon lovitz “nothing” part. Thanks
Movie, Loaded Weapon 1
@@ConsoleWars thanks
Subbed just for the intro music lol good video too
Thanks for the sub!
It’s nice to see a good comparison of 2 versions of a game that I love despite never being able to beat Juggernaut as Wolverine. Anyways, nice job
Art of Fighting is the next Console Wars episode.
