This UA-cam channel is superb, I cant say enough how great these videos are. Absolutely love this channel, Great work thank you so much I'll share and support as much as I can
If there's one Roman emperor I have always respected and looked up to, It's Marcus. Almost every single quote from the man is just downright enlightening.
I remember when I read 'Meditations' for the first time, I thought it was extremely thought-provoking and full of wisdom. It really helped me during stressful times.
I just recently discovered your channel and I have to say it is one of the best channels I have come across since Khan Academy. I am a complete newbie when it comes to philosophy and I have made it my goal to watch one of your videos everyday. Thank you for this channel!
I'm so guilty of binge watching youtube. To fair to myself I don't have a TV. The one thing I don't feel guilt about is watching your videos. Deep thoughts put into layman's terms so guy like me can understand them is so awesome! Thanks.
"Remember how long you've been putting this off. At some point you have to recognize what world is that you belong to, what power rules it and from what source you spring, that their is a limit to the time assigned you and if you don't use is to free yourself it will be gone and will never return." - Marcus Aurelius Realy nice quote especially I like this "free yourself" and also god video.
I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I absolutely love them. They are not only instructive, they also show you how to apply the knowledge in your life. Thank you for doing this.
Very comprehensive yet simple video. One of the best on stoicism. For orientals the idea is quite well known & is integral part of what Hindus call 'Sthita-Pradnya', loosely translated as 'equanimous' in English, for millennia before Epictetus or Aurelius.
Yeah very underrated, this channel has helped me grow and get a better understanding of the human phyche. Great job! Hope you keep this channel going and are successful!
Thanks for posting this. The perfect way to start my morning. This enforces the thought of the Buddha. There is no way to Happiness. Happiness is the Way. Live Strong Live Long and prosperous. Great video! The Meditations were my first introduction to philosophy and I still like to read them today :) It's just such a powerful and logical philosophy - put in relatively simple terms. I even gave copies of it to 2 of my friends who struggled with depression or anxiety in school and both of them reported to have gotten some form of help from reading the Meditations. Fun fact: I live in the city where Marcus Aurelius died - Vienna, Austria :P Anyway, how about doing a video on Daoism? I always felt like it had a lot in common with stoicism, but generally Daoism seems to have a stronger focus on more cosmological / metaphysical topics. But still, I think the resulting attitude is the same, call it indifference, wu-wei, "Gelassenheit" or letting go.
In a consumerist society Stoicism is such a well-settled philosophy to stop the anxiety of buying unnecessary stuff as well as to prevent the perfectionism. "If they want me to do something; I'll do my best to do so, but I won't push myself, for I'd be incurring in such an over demanding which makes to pay attention to the procedure of how I do the job rather than the job itself"
Remember how long you've been putting this off. At some point, you have to recognize what world it is that you belong to; what power rules it and from what source you spring. There is a limit to the time assigned you, and if you don't use it to free yourself it will be gone and will never return.
@@paulberent1896 No expert but I'd guess that both philosophies were developed independently. If you're curious, though, Siddartha Gautama lived about 200 years before the father of stoicism (according to wikipedia), Zeno of Citium, was born.
Incredible channel and content. I really appreciate your work and find it an inspiration as to stay philosophically curious and philosophically literate. I would really like to see a video on Transcendentalism. Being it related to individualism, independence and self reliance, we can always draw parallels between its philosophy as a movement with many others from Stoicism to the notion of Übermensch, even though having completely different backgrounds and core ideas. Thanks you!
+atomixfang Listening to it right now. It's been a game changer for me. I would also recommend "Justice" by Michael Sandel as a bridge connecting early philosophy to modern and how it is applicable to the most contentious debates in our society today.
As much as i agree with many points in stoicism, one must be caution to listen to other or he may unknowingly become arrogance and can never improve himself further.
Thanks, this is great. Fascinatingly there are many similar statements in the Dhammapada; a collection of sayings of the Buddha, e.g.: "Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow. -- Just as a storm throws down a weak tree, so does Mara [i.e. unwholesome impulses, unskillfulness] overpower the man who lives for the pursuit of pleasures, who is uncontrolled in his senses, immoderate in eating, indolent, and dissipated. -- There are those who do not realize that one day we all must die. But those who do realize this settle their quarrels. -- Let the discerning man guard the mind, so difficult to detect and extremely subtle, seizing whatever it desires. A guarded mind brings happiness. -- Few among men are those who cross to the farther shore. The rest, the bulk of men, only run up and down the hither bank. -- Those whose minds have reached full excellence in the factors of enlightenment, who, having renounced acquisitiveness, rejoice in not clinging to things - rid of cankers, glowing with wisdom, they have attained Nibbana in this very life. Calm is his thought, calm his speech, and calm his deed, who, truly knowing, is wholly freed, perfectly tranquil and wise." As far as I can tell, the practice of meditation is the core element for developing a "happy brain" and a more care-free, unburdened and present-focused conscioussness -- and modern neuroscience is beginning to catch up with the wisdom of the stoics, mystics -- and eastern thinkers such as the Buddha -- whose voices echoes throughout history. Cheers!
Willy John doesn't mean we can't bring it back or make it mainstream. Unless they bring down the statues. If they bring down the philosopher statues then we're erasing history. According to my alt right friends. So that's something to worry about.
Has similarities with Christianity - self reliance, personal responsibility, community for man, compassion, charity, etc...They're both based on classic Greek virtues and sprang/were popularized in the Roman world and spread to Europe. The great ideas of the Enlightenment were based on stoicism and Christianity such as individual freedoms...Adam Smith was a Christian who read Epictetus and Seneca regularly. Thomas Jefferson died with Seneca on his night stand. Benjamin Franklin was also well versed in the Stoics and stoicism. It's the philosophy for doers and on how to be resilient...
@@ThePolo77j Sorry to correct you sir but Christianity is not about self reliance is more on God reliance , is not about personal responsibility is on the devil made me do it etc.
@@catauzy it's my understanding that God is in all of us (according to my Catholic upbringing) if the reliance is in God and God is in all of us, why would it be incorrect to say reliance is in ourselves? Ross Robin Highly, highly doubtful. Marcus Aurelius was influenced by the Stoic philosophers that came before him, such as Epictetus, rather than the Buddha. The Romans, in all likelihood, had no knowledge of Buddhism.
Complaining Qoheleth A Greek named Zeno is considered the founder or father (?) of Stoicism in the year 301 BC. Alexander the Great died in 323 BC. Some believe the Greeks brought back Buddhist ideas from the east. There are differences but I, at best, a layperson sharing what was told to me. A major difference between the two is the motivation to practice. In Buddhism the motivation is improvement of ones station in the next life, with the ultimate goal of reaching paradise. (forgive me for not recalling the Buddhist name) One studies Stoicism to lead a better life for it’s own sake, and perhaps societies sake in the here and now. Personally, I value and study both. I hope this helps someone, on the odd chance it gets read. 😊
There is more wisdom in the ~100 pages of Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" than there is in the entire Holy Bible. I go back and read portions of it regularly to further internalize and assimilate his teachings into my own mind. It's one of those books that literally everyone should read.
