As CATS celebrates its 40th Anniversary, we reminisce about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic show with some highlights from the West End closing night in May 2002. The iconic final performance was broadcast live from London's New London Theatre on a large screen in Covent Garden for fans who could not acquire a ticket.

This brings so many tears to my eyes. Please make this full production watchable. It's been nearly 20 years, and we should all be able to experience this now. I'm sure I speak for many when I say I'd have no problem paying $25-30 for it.

Even if I had to give up a full amount of my monthly salary to see this I would, without hesitation
Would pay way more than $25-30 to see the whole thing of that performance if that would make them release it.
You can rent it on yt or buy it on DVD, and it wouldn’t cost $30
@@BongoBon360 Thats the 1998 movie version you are thinking about. We want the West End 2002 finale performance, where this highlight is from.
Now *this* recording should be released in its completeness on DVD/Bluray for the show's anniversary! It's a record of a uniquely staged and designed production that was never bettered - not on Broadway, not on video.
So nice to see footage from this historical show. What a treasure. And so great to see Bonnie Langford, the original Rumpleteazer, dancing with Tugger. Sarah Jane Honeywell is amazing as Etcetera, too. ❤️
The only shame is it's 15 minutes only.
Bonnie Langford was also in 42nd Street and 9 to 5 in London
cats revolutionized the way we see people move onstage. this is a perfect way to close it.

I think I watched him live in the late 80s or early 90s. And I remember that I fell seriously in LOVE with rum tum tugger (I was young, lol). My absolute favorite.

They screened this live at Covent Garden on 11 May 2002 so it was known to many fans this existed. I'm so happy they finally share these clips.

The tour was postponed but I am so excited to be able to see it in 2022. I'm a 1998 baby and thus, grew up with the recording that was recorded the same year. In 2020, I had tickets to go and see it with my father, sister and best friend, in Montréal. We will be waiting for 2022 with much enthusiasm!
Enjoy! I saw the North American tour three times in 2019-2020. It is an absolutely incredible production. I'm also a 1998 baby who grew up on that video; watched it so many times that I wore out the VHS!

The seating in this theatre looks chaotic but also amazing

It was the puuurfect venue! Saw it on Broadway as well, and the experience was not nearly as special.

this is such a pure version of cats i seriously love it so much… this is why it was successful because it’s magical. all the new choreo changes messed up the cat illusions for me… the only good new additions where the new props (like jennydots on the giant broom)
Why does this treasure not exist on dvd or bluray? Cats has only ONE recorded show, the 1998 vhs/dvd. other shows like Les Miserables or Phantom have different live versions, why not Cats? And now especially for the 40th anniversary.
Please Lloyd Webber, RELEASE this treasure, its the original production.

I saw this production July 1983. My first trip to London. Bought my ticket at a broker. When I got to my seat I was not happy to see the back of the set. Then the overture started and the set moved. I started crying right then and I don't think I stopped until we exited the theater.
Cats as how it's meant to be! Some shows can work as regular movies, but honestly the second you take the junkyard off a stage and onto a set you've kind of doomed yourself from the start. I can't wait for the tour to come back so I can go be home again
Its certainly interesting to see how the productions have varied over the years. Such as Growl tiger number being dropped and included in certain tours
This is so cool! I had never seen the original stage in London and wasn't sure what they meant when the show was originally done in a round theater but now I can see. Cool.
I never knew what "in the round" meant either, so seeing this is really cool! I personally prefer this to a regular stage! It allows more audience participation and interaction in my opinion.

@@Blunts_and_cunts That's about 80% of the show, and it's a lot better than nothing, but it is not as good as the actual show. This video exists but will never be released to the public thanks to paperwork. It is superior to the 1998 video in every way except that the 1998 video has the LSO.

100% needs to be released! I know fans would have absolutely no problem paying for it! First saw the show in 1986 & top price tickets were £19.50!

Aaaah so wonderful to see this! I remember this time so well.... I'd only just gotten into CATS the previous year, went to see it in London for the last time in the January of 2001, didn't see this performance but had online friends talking about it... amazing to see this now. Happy 40th ❤️

You have to question the mindset of whoever decided about the movie version of this show... when even a show is done in such "spartan" environment as this one... do a BBETTER impression of the Cats than a freaking multi-million dollar cinema movie...
Yeah the movie is terrible. People need to see it LIVE and in person.
