  • The US Army has recently conducted a test in which its AH-64 Apache attack helicopter fired an Israeli Spike-NLOS missile at a target boat off the coast of Florida. India is one of the countries that fly the Boeing Apache helicopter.
    The US Army’s advanced attack helicopter was equipped with the lethal Spike NLOS (Non-Line Of Sight) missiles with the aim to increase the accuracy of the strikes and enhance the helicopter’s ability to strike moving targets.

    As a old school, map and compass forward observer, this weapon is super awsome. I was expecting the target would need to be painted, but now with GPS, no need. The fine tuning in terminal phase, thats just next level. Like using a pigeon to get the missile on target.

      @Rico Suave Well truth be told every time Army talks about it they always use the word "interim", so they do plan to replace it down the line. That said I don't disagree with the view because for what they want it to do, Spike has its fair share of shortcomings and some features may not be fully exploitable by the Apache. So there is room for more, it's not just the "made in USA" sticker.

    • @namrur2
      @namrur2 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, it's s known practic of the US that is guided by proud more them logic. US can't afford themselves to use an israeli wepon, as they want to sell their own. Unfortunately that what causes the US to test every top of the art Israeli weapons, and then decide it's better to be without anything while they copy and work on their version for a few years. In the meanwhile, they are paying with their soldiers lifes. What funny is the fact that when the US copies these technologies, Israel already developed a newer ones, that again- US will not agree to use. Israeli technologies are welcome all over the world, beside the US that finding every time a reason "why it's not good enough for us". Kind of sad practice that based more on politics and US weapons industries, else then expected security calculations.

    Interesting! When I flew it was Hellfires, but they are actually part of an entirely different and integrated tactical targeting system so I can see why it does not replace it. This could be leveraged more strategically in the battle area. Example: You could be fed coordinates of an opponents AAA assets from AEW&C that were betrayed by airborne sensors or other reconnaissance. Aircraft could provide highly mobile platforms to deliver smart munitions at lower cost and lower risk. It would be interesting to know if it has some of the same technology as the Maverick to work under varying conditions, with the addition of the video feed. I would like to not be involved in the video feed after launch so that so I could give my full attention to taking care of business, and have the missile flight managed by someone already in the loop about the target, who could provide their full attention to the final flight stage, and provide feedback for subsequent launches based on success, miss, regrets after it was too late to re-target, feedback of further worthy opportunities, and other intelligence that can be integrated into other systems and planning.
    BTW, I thought they were telling us real classified information in the red light briefings. I learned later they were lying through their teeth and it made total sense as to why. The truth would have been in violation an international treaty and tipping our hand. We are high risk, and all they need to do is shoot down one of us, and pump us full of drugs, no torture required. The useful thing we learned was the high cost of not following procedures. Capabilities are often not known until there is a conflict and we find out where there is a high probability or proof the opponents know, and nothing more. Everybody else knows not long after. Need to know is alive and well. I also learned these systems were developed long before I could have imagined the technology existed to create them.

      The key to actually being able to wage warfare is just not the fact that the most cutting edge weapons exist.
      Being able to manufacture them at industrial scale at high quality to implement it in large scale warfare is the most important thing.
      In WW2 Germany had cutting edge tanks that were powered with Porsche engines which were seen as the best performance in their day the issue was they could not maintain them at a satisfactory level. They were hard to maintain and hard to manufacture.
      It takes decades to be able to develop the production pipeline never mind the actual weapon it self.

    Ahhh, so the missile itself is the repeater, providing the com/telem link to the aircraft... but when it's in NLOS mode, how's it establishing the link? Is there a satellite, or forward telemetry vehicles involved? With multiple geographical points it could create a mesh network Does anyone know how these keep the link established for the visual feed in NLOS mode? Maybe they're just using very high power and something that'll give decent data rate but reach beyond LOS, like 500mhz to 1.5G or so.

    • @syberphish

    6:50 you showed me animation of the Comanche I'm curious why that program has been cancelled and will not be brought back it looks good but is not effectively or efficient in the modern Battlefield it was designed to fight the Soviets and they're massive tank inventory if the Soviets decided to make a move on the west it would have been tens of thousands of Tanks screaming across Europe and that's not realistic anymore nor is that program why you show it? I apologize for the lack of punctuation and grammar I'm having to use voice activated text and they are prohibitively difficult I do sincerely apologize

      That’s a Bell 360 Invictus, a new scout helo the army is looking at in the FARA project. Looks kinda similar to a Comanche, I suppose, but not too much if you pay attention to detail. No relationship or shared development between the airframes.

    Spike NLOS is a great weapon. However it is an interim solution. The more cost effective weapon would be the new M109 with the 58 caliber Howitzer gun 155mm. With precision rounds like excaliber, the cost per shot is significantly lower and is even more powerful to take out armored vehicles, bunkers etc than an ATGM

    • @kreb7
      @kreb7 2 роки тому +1

      Yes is can see moving the Howitzer at a speed of 300km/hr. In a strait line without issue of mountains or bridges

    • @ConstantineJoseph
      @ConstantineJoseph 2 роки тому

      @@kreb7 armored SPH or self propelled howitzers are far far cheaper to operate and to maintain.
      Helicopters may move at the speed of 200-300kmh but they need air cover and lots of support.
      They are also highly vulnerable from SAMs both main line and shoulder fired.
      Modern AAA auto cannons also have superb range and firing targeting systems that can easily take down helicopters moving at high speeds due to AI prediction system installed.
      On the other hand the US 58 cal 155mm can fire at up to 70km and could improve that range even further. Increasing precision from projectiles like Excalibur or even standard 155mm projectiles have very good kill radius and accuracy, closing in on 10m of the firing target.
      The Russians already can fire at 70km range and the Chinese will soon have such developments.
      Not only is the ammunition so much cheaper, they are also impossible to detect and intercept from anti missile systems like APS on tanks or CRAM ground based anti ballistics technology. This is down to the high supersonic speeds 155mm have when leaving the barrel.
      Yes the attack helicopter has her use. But I see an ever increasing reliance on lower cost precision artillery that is both long range and are available in mass quantities.
      The future really is still the king of the battlefield, the artillery. And air forces will be considering them as the primary ground vehicular threat in the future.

    • @kreb7
      @kreb7 2 роки тому

      @@ConstantineJoseph You think that Howitzer dosent need air cover. Not only needs but because of the slow moving compare to helicopter needs to be sustained over a long period of time. Plus you need to posses the ground. Were helicopters can dip in and out. Also can be hit by counter battery fire if they are in range so are you. If the 155 dosent hit precise it will not do much on the armor. Also excaliber requires the target to be painted to hit a tank ie some one or another asset to do it. Is 100k each not that cheap. It is much better to use SMArt 155 which is fire and forget and has two submunnitions or even the vulcano which has double the range of excaliber. And still dont have the flexibility of a helicopter

    • @ConstantineJoseph
      @ConstantineJoseph 2 роки тому

      kreb7 helicopters definitely have a lot to offer. However they are limited in quantities and have to be selected for certain missions like taking out the most important armoured formations having the best tank units or best mechanized infantry formations.
      They do not have all the firepower in the world to take on entire armies at one sorties. However artillery can do that job.
      Helicopters can pop off perhaps 8 of these missiles each before returning back for rearming and refueling which will take time.
      Artillery is a matter of positioning the artillery and using rapid shoot and scoot methods.
      There are two methods where artillery can be highly effective. As mentioned shoot and scoot which is to fire a quick barrage for a few minutes before redeploying somewhere else.
      Secondly is concealment in denser forestation behind tree lines or within pockets in the jungle or forests along with camouflage nets to reduce signature for aircraft detection.
      With a longer range rocket assisted 155mm projectile, cost of the munitions is lower. Longer caliber 155mm barrels mean longer ranges as well. Being able to fire hundreds of 155mm at any armored formation or threat at really Long ranges.
      If painting is required, the vast amounts of UAVs already have such capabilities. Often operated by recon, scout or pioneers, they are able to stealthily deploy UAVs to paint armoured threats where these 155mm rounds will land, on them.
      A strike to the TOP any tank in the world is a 100 percent kill. This is down to the extremely thin TOP armor.
      Secondly 155mm is a very powerful HE round with around 1900 or more fragments shedded, resulting in optics being destroyed, gun barrels being perforated, tracks being damaged, which is as good as a tank being taken out of action.
      Unless of course if you are talking about 105mm, many tanks are able to withstand 105mm HE as the power of those rounds are significantly less lethal as the mighty 155mm.
      155mm is highly effective against armor and will remain so for a Long time to come.
