- Accurately, these are a species of Comb Jelly (Mnemiopsis sp.). Comb Jellies are often confused with Jellyfish (Cnidaria), but are in a separate phylum (Ctenophora). The rainbow light show depicted here is a result of light scattering via movement of cilia comprising the organisms' comb rows (as well as a degree of bioluminescence).

Saw these jellyfish do this in person tonight while night diving in Key Largo. Awed….simply awed and humbled at their beauty.

I wonder if anyone of them have been brought to the surface and studied to see how they make that almost l.e.d/neon light effect. Super fascinating
They live close to the surface
For many decades, divers, biologists and other scientists have been hired to study these species and others. All creatures' nervous systems are electrical in nature, and that is what you're seeing. Decades ago, there used to be a PBS TV show called "Body Electric" that explained a few things as they did exercise. The entire neurology is electrical in its sending of electrical signals; it is essential in all Life forms.
