However, by the time official production began it was decided he would be a "different" Ultraman, albeit one that looked nearly identical to the original. Before 1984 he was referred to in English as "New Ultraman" or "The Ultraman Who Returned". This changed in 1984 when Bandai acquired the toy rights for the series and held a contest alongside Tsuburaya Productions (Creators of Ultraman) to rename this specific Ultraman. The winning name was Ultraman Jack, and so his name was subsequently retconned to Ultraman Jack.

Ultraman Jack was supposed to be the original Ultraman but was at the last minute changed, hence why this series isn't named Ultraman Jack.
They named him Jack in 1984. Before that, he was known as Urutoraman nise (the second Ultraman)
