I just commented on a video which asked what your favorite old-style video game is, and I said "Flashback" for Sega Genesis, which led me to see if anyone had done a video on it, and here I am. I agree about the "fetch" part, and that working out solutions to the puzzles makes it worth the hassle of getting through it. The character movement being so natural is a plus, as well. It's a really great game.
I liked the fetch quest part myself. My fav item wasn't even a weapon of sorts, it was the teleporting device that you could throw, hit the button on the remote and zap you were now in another place. That was cool. I beat the game a couple of times. It kept my interest for a long time, I'd give it 9/10
Great review! Oh, and thank you so much for describing the running jump. I got stuck on the second level for so long until I saw this video. Yeah, that control scheme is weird.
Yeah, that was the level when the power generator core was melting down and you had to stick in a new power cell to stop it from exploding. It does'nt tell you that the item is there along side your gun, shield etc. You had to find out the hard way by dying about a hundred times.
(cont.) Upon completing the game, it was one of the biggest accomplishments of my young life at thee time since it took so long and the final level and especially final sequence took a great deal of strategy to overcome. This game was, and still is one of the greatest action/adventure games ever created, and in my opinion remains second to none for the genesis or snes, (and that coming from a crazy super tecmo bowl fan). I'm just shocked as to why it has never been remade for the PS3 or xbox.
I liked to have seen a movie rendition of this game to tell the truth and I even liked some of the music in this game. I would give it a 9/10 because of the myriad trial-error-death replays on the very first level when I first played this.
great review. you nailed it on the fetch quests. but i thought that traveling through the future city was still pretty cool. great ending to the game as well
You must be VERY tough on rating games. I must've played over a thousand games since the Atari days up until now. And yet this game still manages to hold a spot within my top-10 all-time list.
This this definitely resembles Oddworld in more ways than one, right down to the rock throwing and the way he turns around if you press up while standing in front of a ledge. There's no way the OW creators hadn't seen this game before, although OW is the better game.
I never knew that I had a shield. So it took me ages to luck out and win fights against cops. Then I didn't know about the "auto jump" so I couldn't get past the first second of the 2nd level.
Great review pal, I played this game a lot as a kid. I even managed to beat it eventually. I felt so accomplished :) I think the running jump does tend to confuse a lot of people though, I was stuck at the beginning part of the second level for the longest time (since you can get through the first level without using it)
There is a new officially licensed FLASHBACK re-recording available on itunes, amazon, and loudr! It features the complete SNES / Genesis score redone as an all synth 80s throwback in the vein of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter. More info, clips, and purchase links can be found via the site here: richdouglas.wix.com/flashback-synth
I cant believe this review. I respevt the reviewers opinion and all but tthis game was sooooo far ahead of its time from every aspect from the incredible graphics, that were nowhere near this point at this time for any other game, to the concept of "missions" which are found in almost every action/adventure game out today. there was nothing tedious about it, as the missions helped you along in the story, and helped you become more familiar with all of the gameplay aspect.
man this is a great review but flashback was a completely hard game game for me cause of the controls ...thats why i couldnt get pass some levels other than that flashback was one of those great games that i grew up with one thing that attracted me to the game alot was the music...its was bad ass and fitted into the right moments
I loved this game! unfortunately I discoveed the wall hack by accident and that ruined the game for me a bit. I still have it for my genesis system i'll probably play it again in the future for nostalgia :P

I thought this game had graphics that were beyond its years from back in the days.

man i loved this game! played it again a couple of years ago it still kicks ass
This remains my favorite game of all time--even the second level.

If I'm not mistaken, you did the wall trick,by running towards the wall, and just before hitting it push back on the d pad then push foward again.
Did anyone ever feel this game resembles the movie 'total recall'? Wish psn and xbl release this, last played this over 10yrs ago :(

great ending to the game as well
still in my top 10 games of all time
The Job thing was sick
my favorite genesis game when i was 12yrs took me monts to pass it👍💯✔
Hands down one of the best game ever on the genesis.
You must be VERY tough on rating games. I must've played over a thousand games since the Atari days up until now. And yet this game still manages to hold a spot within my top-10 all-time list.
Reminds me of the game Another World also on Genesis, same concept as this, same animation, great game
The graphics are awesome for the Genesis (especially the cutscenes), but graphic-wise "Out of this world" was better, due to the 3D space of gameplay.
Some good points there. Personally I found the controls quite intuitive. Depends on the person I guess. Good review.

I still have nightmares about the morphs. Could never shoot those things.
Also I could never figure out how to catch the taxi at the taxi stand in what looks like the open air scene.
Brilliant game, I agree with everything in this review except the score, I'd definitely give it a 7.6
great game. i completed it back in the day but i played it on the snes.
Hope Nintendo release this for the Wii shop either from the Genesis/Megadrive format or the SNES

7.5??? For me this game is 10/10... I loved to play.. it is a really amazing game.
the animation in the game reminds of Prince of Persia.
it looked so much better on genesis, I loved it though -_- even the fetch quest cause i was totally in to finding out what happened to conrad haha
man this is a great review
but flashback was a completely hard game game for me cause of the controls ...thats why i couldnt get pass some levels
other than that flashback was one of those great games that i grew up with
one thing that attracted me to the game alot was the music...its was bad ass and fitted into the right moments
look, fans, lets start a youtube video campaign to get a gredible director to make a flaskback movie?
I loved this game! unfortunately I discoveed the wall hack by accident and that ruined the game for me a bit.
I still have it for my genesis system i'll probably play it again in the future for nostalgia :P
i agree entirely. love both games though. :)
At least it wasn't as frustrating as Out of this World is.
How can I get a hold of this game now? I went to Game Stop but couldn't find it. I know it's old, but I was hoping maybe they released it again.
"I'll be honest with you..."
Great game!
Hehe elevator fun. I know all about that. Mass effect. Am i right?
flashback is the bollocks
And now they destroy it with a new updated "action packed" mini game. -_-
the game was NOT good until you got the controls down
Also I could never figure out how to catch the taxi at the taxi stand in what looks like the open air scene.
