To be honest if i didnt already know how to do this. And i was looking for a video on a how to, I would definitely 💯 % reference this video. Amazing job!!!
Thanks, D4, good of you to say. I try to cover the stuff people need to maintain their cars on a day-to-day basis, rather than 'showy' expensive mods. (having said that, I am planning a series on speaker upgrades - I went Hertz, awesome👍)
@@jeremylindsey94 awesome, thank you. Further to my reply above, it really isn't hard. Go steady, follow the process, use the right tools and materials and you'll be there. I can do discs and pads in not much over an hour, but if you're a first timer, does it matter if it takes all of a Saturday? Remember, I've had almost 50 years practice.
What I would add is about the grub screw that holds the disc onto the hub. These are buggers for seizure or rounding off. This can be alleviated by a few deft blows with a hammer onto the disc face before trying to undo them. It’s worth doing as they are sturdy little things that take some serious drilling out if they do round off.... Trust me.
Yes, they are made with high grade rust resistant steel so are tough to drill out. On 'better' cars anyway (some cars, noteably Fords, don't have them as a cost saving!)
That's the idea. I try to show the steps in the order they can be carried out. This enables you to watch the video as you work (using pause) without having to keep rewinding or forwarding.
I've watched quite a few others on YT, who remove the slide pins for lubrication but without cleaning them or their rubbers❗❗ That's just asking for problems. 😬
YES, I'm a big fan of the two pack Foliatec paints. Easy to use and VERY hard wearing. Single pack paints just don't last like this does: amzn.to/3qgXO7O CLEANLINESS is the key. Use a fibre brush in a drill amzn.to/3sqku7C
Do you have to do the bit with the cable before, and the bleeding after? Never done this when changing pads and discs, but do hang up the caliper so it doesnt damage the brake hose...
Thanks for the video, very helpful. I keep getting stones stuck between the brake disc and the cover behind it, the noise it makes is terrible and the stones will not come out. Can these covers be removed, I noticed you don't have them on yours?
Primarily looks. Also a reason for manufacturers and retailers to prize extra wonga from your wallet. Slots have virtually no effect on braking performance, but are likely to be noisy and wear your pads out quicker. Avoid cross drilled like the plague. The holes are stress raisers and you are likley to get cracking around them and they make the braking performance worse. Pagid are my favourite discs with Pagid pads (unless you're going on track, in which case use Yellow Stuff pads). Last well because they have Geomet corrosion protection all over.
Cyd, I've had my 2005 Aero for nearly 5 years and its had 2 front nearside calliper's in that time, along with new pads and discs (302mm discs on mine), for some reason the discs always end up warmed as i always seem to have a sticking nearside calliper even though I have em replaced and the brakes cleaned up with new pads and discs etc, any idea what else can be causing this?, I dont do big miles lucky if I've done 20k in the last 5 years! Your video's are much appreciated
i bought Textar Ceratec to use on caliper pins after watching this video but i am a bit worried now as it says to avoid lubricating any rubber parts ???
I don't know what they mean by this. If it was harmful to rubber, it would be no damn good for brakes❗ The slide pins run in rubber sleeves and the pistons have rubber gaiters. I'll send the Q to TMD and see what advice they offer (if any).
I've gotten lucky and was able to use a flat screwdriver to push the pad and caliper piston back while it was still on the hub. Just opened the brake fluid reservoir and made sure it didn't over flow when doing it. Also my calipers had a 302 engraved on them.
Watch the process carefully again. You will see that the excess fluid from retracting the piston is expelled via the bleed nipple. You SHOULD NOT allow the fluid to flow "backwards" up the braking system. As @MikeHumble says you can damage the master cylinder. You can also damage the ABS module. This is one of the worst practices garages indulge in and is frustrating to braking engineers at OEs.

Thank you. I have a problem with the sound. The sound is turned off in the driver’s door and the second door for the recorded flag. The sound is working, but in a very distant voice
This man is doing gods work on these tutorials. Ive done brakes before but it always helps to watch someone do things the right way!
Decades of learning and practice distilled into a short video 👍

Great vid. I just changed the pads and the discs. Very informative. I didnt realize I shouldnt use copper grease for these.
Throw your copper grease in the bin
@@CycloneCyd Why should we not use copper grease? Mine has it on there from last time the brakes were done
Love SAAB. These videos are gold 😎💪

Sure, I'll add that to the list. 👍

For the 314 MM 2.8 Aero (front brakes) , do you have to remove carrier bracket to put on a new rotor? Would like to avoid removing it if possible.
I'm changing 314s in this video. Yes, you must remove the carrier - I show you how.
13:50 you forgot to explain how directional brake pads work or how to install them correctly 😮
What is the difference between solid and drilled and grooved discs? Can I use drilled and grooved if my car has solid ones currently. Tia

NEVER do that. It’s too easy to “flip” the seals over in the master cylinder. The above way means you ain’t gonna cripple your car.

302 is the size of the discs. The calipers are paired to the discs but only the 285 and 302 are marked.
What do you know about the dreaded "steering malfunction" message???
Clean the ISM
My disc Saab9-3 is totally stucked. I even have used a large wheel extractor with two arms . Any suggestion how to get the disk off?
Have you removed the small retaining screw? Believe me I've seen that mistake made before.
If you have, then hit it harder with a bigger hammer.
@@CycloneCyd I fixed it... As you said harder and heavyer hammer.

0:24 and chuck your wheel under the chassis rail, just as an extra safety

ive got the same brake caliper as you in the front but my brake disc is 285mm thats a bit odd
Cyd, copper grease can take up to 1100 C of heat... Just saying.
Nicely Googled❗ Now read the specs properly.
