    I really appreciate videos like this. Many aquascaping channels come across as very elitist, expensive and a tad pretentious, but your videos are extremely grounded and accessible!

    Oh wow, I thought I recognized you! I commented on that other video about fish-in cycle, lol Anyways I watched this entire series, all four parts, and it has been by far the best educational video about planting that I have been able to find!! I've been searching like crazy because I really want to get into it! I'd love to see a video about how to trim plants, propagate them, stuff like that..I can't find anything on how to cut off bad looking leaves, stems, or rhizomes; like where do you make the cut, does the angle matter, do you just cut the whole leaf off or make a cut on the leaf only where the damage is, etc...

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  7 років тому

      Hi Amada! Haha Small world? Anyways, how you trim plants depend on the plant itself. But that's a great video to do. Let me see if I can put one together for this weekends release. :) Thanks for coming back! Even though I a FISH MURDERER! ;)

      Haha thanks. Yeh it's annoying cause I have to keep looking it up. My friend said it made more sense that the players with the ball is the offense because the are charging with the ball. But I'm like, yeh but it makes as much sense if the team with the ball HAS the ball because they are defending it. Or it's because I've seen one two many games with the Cowboys in it because no one knows what they are doing. *runs away from Cowboy fans*

    Your videos were amazing, I just sat and watched all 4 on this playlist and got more than a few pages of notes. You hooked me in during the first video when you mentioned that everyone had different answers and methods because different ways work for them. That's when it clicked and I took out the pen and paper. I was getting ready to give up on looking for a simplified yet organized explanation on UA-cam. I feel this was the perfect way to scratch the surface of planted tank info and now I know where to look for the rest of the information that I need to get started. I really appreciate it. Great work!

    I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video series. I've had fish tanks for years and only recently decided that I wanted to go into the world of real plants (I know, I know,) and this video series really answered a lot of the questions that I have had. I still consider myself a huge noobie so I am hoping that armed with this new knowledge I won't totally and completely blow it, haha. I still have a lot more research to do before I decide how I want to jump this off but I did want to say thanks so much again for the educational series!

    Great video. I was wondering if you could make or know of someone who made a video on plants that get along. I have read the Ecology of the Planted Aquarium and there is a section about Allelopathy. it was confusing and really didn't explain well what plants can thrive together. Maybe in your personal experience or someone you know this has been explained. Thanks and keep up the great work! Really enjoy your tanks!

    • @TheWaterBox

      I know there are plants that are like that but it's rare. Dustin at Dustin's fishtank talk about a couple in one of his videos so if you dig into it you might find the video where he talks about it. I haven't had any problems with Allelopathy or came across it with any plants before. Other than just some plants growing crazy than others and growing into their space but that didn't bother each other at all.

    I'm in need of some advice on lighting. I have a 180g and wondering if two 36" finnex planted 24/7 will be enough for me. I'm not running co2 or anything. Just a beginner at planted tanks this will be my first. All I have is a huge piece of driftwood and some jungle val along the back. I plan on putting lots of different plants. Just don't want to restrict my choice on plants because my light isn't strong enough

    Do you have any suggestions on reducing water flow in the filtration system ? Would it be wiser to place plants near the intake or output?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  6 років тому

      Cut down? You can install a ball valve on the filter line if you're using a canister filter. I don't know what kind of filter you're using. HOB usually have the ability to adjust flow. If you're using a sump or something, you should have installed ball valves in your lines. If you wish you can plant near the outtake but that's not a fix to a problem. Your whole tank should have correct flow or you'll run into problems in dead areas of your tank after a while

    I’ve watched the series and it’s great. I want to do a planted tank and I could use some advice. I have a 29 gal tank that was set up for a red ear slider turtle (lived 28 yrs) so it has a full spectrum light, gravel and now has guppies (tons 😂) 2 bristled nose plecos and 2 Corydoras. Which plants do suggest I use?

      For what size tank?

    • @timothy_b03

      The Water Box I’m thinking 3 on a standard 125

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  4 роки тому

      @@timothy_b03 ON a 125? I'd run on a extended photoperiod... like 10 hours but it also depend son the plants you want to grow. Those 20w floods is low light, you'll need three at least to cover the length of a 125 (and you probably won't hit anything outside of a 1 to 1.5 effectively). remember, the would only cover about 1 to 1.5 ft in a spotlight config. If you're planning on planting anything extreme that require high light and requires a lot of the red light spectrum then a flood light might not be a good choice. If they are all green type of low or med demanding light plants you should be ok (java ferns, moss, anubius... etc).
      I'm planning to run two 50w on my 120 with low light demanding plants. Mostly java ferns probably

    • @timothy_b03
      @timothy_b03 4 роки тому

      The Water Box yes I am not planning on having any high demanding plants. Perhaps I could use a higher wattage?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  4 роки тому +1

      @@timothy_b03 I'd probably go up to 30 or 50 for a 120, mainly because of the depth.

    So far i don't have any algae problems in my 5 gallon planted tank. I keep my light running between 9-12 hours. During the day when I have a work at 7 pm, I allow natural sunlight to do the work but during my day off use my DIY LED light. It depends upon my work schedule.
    But i have a concern, is it better to run the lighting on a fixed schedule or is it ok to run it anytime of the day as long as it is 9-12 hours/day?

    • @TheWaterBox
      @TheWaterBox  8 років тому

      Run it at a fixed schedule. Plants love consistancy. As long as your tank is doing fine, 9 to 12 hours a day is fine. If you do get an algae bloom, just cut down the lights. I usually run my lights at 8 hours a day. I do cut it to 6 hours when I first set up a tank for a few weeks or through the algae establishment period.

    Hey Brother new subscriber here, love the channel. Starting my first planted tank and i'll be dosing the water table and using river sand as a substrate due to vampire crabs preferring it. Including some basic fish and shrimp to experiment with some things. My question is in aquascaping with rocks and gravel. Is there any risk of using larger sized gravel under the substrate for design purposes? risk of bacteria building up or anything? Any tips would be great man, just looking to save dollars where I can. Already have lots of gravel due to bonsai hobby. Thanks for your time.

      Oh man, the 40g would be nice. A little big to just a shrimp tank but it'll be great to do up a planted with it as it's not that tall and lots of surface room to plany with plants. Smaller tanks even in a 20g long I find later than it's small and limits to what I want to grow because it's so shallow.
