We took a little trip around Southampton in Dec 2020 and had a look at some of its quirky history, from old abandoned tunnels to viaducts that never were. Southampton has a rich history deserved to be shared.

Anybody else watching these great videos and think we should restore our canal system and improve the railnetwork so goods can be transported with lower enviromental impact?
Thanks again Rebecca and Paul for a great insight into our industrial history!

It's interesting how some railways reuse canal routes.
In Portsmouth the railway did that, quite literally digging up the canal bed and laying the railway. Then housing and roads were built on the rest. The only surviving part being the old lock at Eastney.

I like the enthusiasm. Once you get your head around a city's railways, it's catching as you discover all the weird quirks and bits that people miss- especially things like tunnels, defences, and bits of failed or repurposed projects on top of each other to confuse the hell out of people. Then you really get on top of it.
I passed through Southampton twice for a funeral ( there and back, not two!) so only had a few hours there. I remember the station being quite a walk from the city centre, lots of hilly stuff with civic buildings in between: if only I knew it hid the railway and canal tunnels on top of each other. Then there were the truncated city walls, a shadow of York's but a decent to walk along. I did stumble on a bombed out church from WW2 that had interactive posts where you could hear the likes of Eva Hart, a vociferous Titanic survivor, telling her story and how she disapproved of its disturbance. On the flight to Southampton, looking down it felt odd as it looked exactly like the OS map (180, 1" series), but this was real. The Itchen, Test and Isle of Wight were exactly as the old OS 1" maps except for the colours. And yes, it is odd saying that because it would look like the map, but there you go! I looked out for Calshot Spit, trying to figure out what the Olympic and HMS Hawke were up to during their collision in 1911.
H H Gasson wrote a series of quite entertaining books ( Firing Days, Footplate Days, and later, Signalling Days (BR ) about his life on the GWR. He worked Didcot to Southampton a lot.

You'll have fun if you ever get up to Birmingham 😁
On the railway front, there are three extant stations plus a surviving building from a fourth (well, technically the first - soon to be overshadowed by a massive new station), two of which have been demolished and rebuilt (although if you know where to look, you can see evidence of their predecessors), a viaduct to nowhere, which, although slightly shortened, was never completed (one railway company not giving another permission to connect). A few miles South at Longbridge, there's even an Abandoned Railway, with much of the route still walkable (some officially, some unofficially).
It's also got a lot of canal history, with various loops bypassed by Telford's "new" main line, many of which are still in water and navigable, plus two stop locks (back when canal companies were competing, to stop one poaching the other's water - one of which still has its gates, albeit now permanently open).

I lived in Southampton for 3.5 years (last place being on Archers Road, so obviously well familiar with the location of The Dell 😁 ) and have always been fascinated by the history of the place, so I knew a reasonable amount, but not all this about the various railway schemes there had been.
I also had no idea it was the tramways that had lead to Bargate being opened up either side.
(As a side note, Southampton Central station is of course, awfully named, because it's not centrally located for the actual town centre, at all, but not much other option, without destroying East Park!)

Speaking about railways down your’neck of the woods’ when I drive to Cornwall and Devon, as I have done since I could drive and as a passenger when I was too young to drive, we always use the M3 and shortly after we leave the Fleet service area possibly near the ‘Hook’ turnoff, I always glance over at the derelict railway viaduct on the right hand side and I often wonder about it and wonder if you can tell me anything about it and also is that the same railway as the viaduct of many arches at Hedge End area of Southampton TIA Phil.

Always wondered about that big one viaduct too. It's huge for what I believe it's intend purpose was... essentially just a spur road from Odiham to Hartley Row.

What about doing lost railways and canals in Portsmouth and the railway line that went from Fareham to Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent. And the railway line that once went to Hayling Island east of Portsmouth.

The Shirley Local History group covered these proposed railways in one of their atumn talks a couple of years ago. Unfortunatly their website is down at the moment so I can't link to it. Did you know that the LSWR deliberatly built a clock tower on their station to scupper the DNS. There is also a plan of the proposed line to the Bargate in the Southampton city archives

    • @pwhitewick
      @pwhitewick  3 роки тому

How did the building of the clock scupper the DNS? My understanding was that they refused hep from LSWR and GWR until they ran out of cash at Winch. Subsequently no choice but to accept LSWR offer of a viaduct at shawford.
