In general good amount of understanding of the area you work as a project manager is asked by many companies, though the core skill of project manager is people and process. I see many of clients who work in cloud based work, end up doing some cloud certification to show their attitude to learn the area they work in. So it depend on organizations and some understanding is needed to show that you can understand your team issues.
