The bit where the mom and dad are enjoying the night snowfall by the gentle glow of the Christmas tree will always be one of my favorite movie moments.
Absolutely. No matter what issues they may have had in their relationship during the movie, they show how much they love and support each other through it all. And that scene at the end perfectly shows that.
You mean the end of the movie?
Me too. I love that part
Yes.
There's a lot of Wizard of Oz references.
True. The movie takes place in 1940. The Wizard of Oz hit theaters in 1939. The math adds up.
I love the moment when Ralphie finds the hidden gift, and his dad is so happy
His pop was a real one.
I feel like a lot of people underestimate the dad in this movie.
Yes. Would've been even funnier if when the mom was questioning the dad about getting the bb guyn, the dad replied "santa sent it as a replacement for the lamp... unless you prefer the original arrangement...." Would've fit the theme of realism with families and how parents passive-aggressively tit-for-tating some of their compromises.
@@unclebounce1495No
@@iwatchyoutube6539 Yes.
Great depth of thought there.
RANDY JUST LAY THERE LIKE A SLUG.
IT WAS HIS ONLY DEFENSE
Allies in RPG games when they’re defeated in battle.
Darren McGavin really made this movie as the Old Man. He was one of the best character actors Hollywood ever produced. Really happy they didn't end up going wiith Jack Nicholson on this one.
When you see the joy on his face when Ralphie is opening his Red Ryder BB gun, that’s just beautiful acting. It’s one of the sweetest moments in the movie.
Hey Addie. Also wanted to have a little tidbit. The scene at the end of the movie in the Chinese restaurant the mom's reaction to the duck was real. The director did not tell them that it was going to be a duck with full head and neck. And that was a surprise also the chopping off of the neck was not revealed to the cast. So all of moms reactions were genuine. Fun fact
I love this movie because it really helps you remember how Christmas was when you were a kid. It was just magical and everyone had that one present they wanted more than anything in the world. And the fact that the dad was the one who wound up getting him the BB gun, without consulting his wife, made it feel even more special because just because he wasn't paying attention doesn't mean he wasn't listening.
Addie's must watch 💯 most redheads are tho.
Peter Billingsley, aka Ralphie, was also a producer on Iron Man and appeared in Iron Man and Spider Man: Far From Home.
"We're not ot Tony Stark" was his line.
@@wyrmshadow4374 "I'm not Tony Stark."
He also worked with Jon Favreau on the scifi version of Jumanji called Zathura. In one of the scenes, the leg lamp is part of the room furnishings that slides across the room.
He was also in Elf. He was the one that told Buddy that he wasn't a cotton headed ninny muggins, but was just special
He was in the Breakup. At the bowling alley when he asked for his glove back
Warm water. Never pull your tongue off if you can avoid it.
The sequel ("A Christmas Story Christmas" released last month) was surprisingly good as well !
Current owner of Christmas Story House in Cleveland is selling the house.
Just watched the new special yesterday, and I loved it! I also didn't expect it to be as emotional as it is. I definitely recommend it!
I thought you were talking about Christmas story 2. That's a true garbage fire
@@OneArmedRetroGamer No, Peter Billingsley aka Ralphie and his friend, fellow producer, Vince Vaughn developed this movie. They gathered most of original cast except Melinda Dillon, mom (retired from acting) and Darren McGavin, Old Man (he died in 2006) They written death of Old Man as Ralphie calls his dad in new movie.
They have Julie Hagerty of Airplane fame as Ralphie's mom
Definitely my favorite Xmas movie. I loved it as a kid, and even moreso now, since Dad recreated the gifting scene when he gave me a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas when I was 10 or 11.
My dad did the same thing when I was 8 or 9. It's absolutely one of my most remembered Christmas gifts
@@Shabbot That's awesome!
Addie is one of my top reactors. She's so sweet and fun to watch. Another amazing reaction. Thank you for the minor distraction and escape from an ugly world. Congrats on 50K subs, you'll be up to 100k before mid 2023. Happy New Year Addie😁
This movie takes me back to the late 40’s and fifties when Christmas’s were just as portrayed in this film. Your review was really good. I’m glad you got to experience what Christmas was like in those days.
You might like to look at "Santa Clause: The Movie" (1985) and "Ernest Saves Christmas" (1988) next year.
Seeing the Bandits with xx on their eyes, made me think of my nephew, Bryan. Bryan always had a stoic expression on his face growing up. His parents wanted to emphasize Jesus at Christmas, so they told him that there was no Santa Clause. They did explain to him where the character originated. They explained who St. Nicholas was and that he lived centuries ago.
All was well until Bryan started school. Of course, when the other kids started talking about Santa, Bryan would "set them straight". That didn't go over well. His parents got a call from the teacher explaining that Bryan was upsetting some of the kids, AND their parents. So, they sat him down and exlained how other parents wanted their kids to believe in Santa. They told him that if the topic of Santa came up, he shouldn't talk about St. Nicholas living centuries ago and that he shouldn't disabuse the kids of their belief.
So, it happened one day that they were out Christmas shopping at the mall. As they were making a purchase, the clerk tried to engage this stoic little boy and make him smile. She asked him, "Are you ready for Santa to come?" Without changing his expression, Bryan replied, "Santa Clause is dead. But, we don't talk about it."
To this day they have an ornament on their tree. Santa Clause...with xx on his eyes.
I appreciate this "late" I'm Catholic, we do Christmas till February
For the record, they should have just poured warm water over Flick's tongue. Clearly the fire department didn't send their best... for the sake of comedy, of course.
I think I was officially 'old' when I started to really enjoy getting socks as a gift.
I had a pink bunny outfit not too dissimilar from Ralphie's, though it didn't have bunny faces on the feet. It wasn't purchased as a Halloween costume, but I only remember ever wearing it to go trick or treating one Halloween.
I was young enough not to really care if it looked goofy and, since it was one of the few opportunities I had to go trick or treating (I lived in a rural area with few houses and NO children), I wouldn't have cared how goofy I looked, anyway. Some family friends invited us to come to their street (in the city!) for Halloween, and I absolutely raked in the candy. It was glorious.
The only intense part of the evening was this one house... the owners went all out with spooky lighting and sound effects and, in order to get your candy, you had to take it out of a bowl being held by a man, sitting in a lawn chair amongst the creepy scenery and wearing a rather fierce looking gorilla costume. I was very cautious about getting that particular piece of candy, but I persevered.
The woman who invited us just passed this morning, so... R.I.P., Judy.
Christmas doesn't officially end until January 6th, so you're still on time.
The Wizard of Oz references are likely due to this taking place in 1940, a year after the Wizard of Oz came out.
I bought that same Red Ryder air rifle BB gun for my dad for Christmas last year! (Before anyone asks, no! I don’t mean Thomas Wayne lol)
This is a movie with a very VERY valuable life lesson that we must extract to from this movie to learn and that is life is full of people that will step on you and send you down sliding faster then you can climb up and they do it just to be jerks BUT you must fight to get back up and fight until you get what you want in life.
An 80's Christmas 🎄 classic I love that when the bully shows up you hear Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf playing to announce he's coming Ralphie's visit with Santa was hilarious and possibly traumatizing. Fun movie I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Addie and all the best to you in 2023.
I have something to admit... I, too, am a turkey junkie 😂
"You'll Shoot your eye out, kid."
Poor Ralphie.
Whenever he asks for his favorite BB gun, they always tell him that.
"Fun" Fact:
Scotty Schwartz (the actor who portrayed Flick, the light pole licker), went on to become an adult film "star" for a short while under the name Flick Shagwell.
"Fra jee lee... must be Italian" is probably the most randomly dropped quote for this classic.
Next year I recommend The Ref as one of your Christmas movies... and Four Rooms for the new year
I saw this when it first came out in theaters. After all these years I still haven't figured out what a housticle fifer is. Lol!!!
Admit it Addie, you want one of those leg lamps...
This movie is a tradition in my family. My mom likes talking about how it takes her back to her childhood
Earlier in the summer I took a trip to Cleveland Ohio to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Browns football stadium while there I took a tour of the house which is now a museum and tourist attraction that they filmed A Christmas Story in, they sell the leg lamp and they also sell the pink bunny pajamas.
I have a bunch of pictures and it was a fun place.
They used the house for external shots, but they had a set for the inside.
@@BubbaCoop yes but they've remodeled the inside to match the movie now
Just so you know, leg lamps are very popular items that can be purchased in a wide variety of configurations, from full size lamps to night lights to string lights.
Fun reaction, Addie. A Christmas Story (1983) is one of my favorite Christmas movies. My favorite part will always be when Ralphie exclaims "Oh Fudge!" and ends up with Lifebuoy soap in his mouth. Another funny scene is when the dad says "Fra-Gee-Lay", when reading the crate that contains the leg lamp. Have a happy new year, Addie.
Darren McGaven had his own TV show that was a precursor to "The X-Files" called "Kolchak: the Night Stalker". He was a newspaper reporter who kept finding supernatural events to report on.
Other Christmas movies: Remember the Night, Mixed Nuts, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Scrooged
This, Christmas Vacation, Elf, and Bad Santa are all holiday must watches for me.
And Peter Billingsly "Ralphie" played an elf as well as executive producer on Elf
The channels TBS and TNT play this on a 24 hour marathon every Christmas eve.
Now go back and watch the first Iron Man movie. Remember when Obadiah Stane is yelling at a scientist, "Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!"? The scientist he's yelling at is Peter Billingsley, who played Ralphie in this movie. He even shows up again in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
19:53 Because The Wizard of Oz had just come out during this time period so they were promoting it a lot.
Thanks for posting this! I needed a little Post-Christmas cheer!
there have been a number of sequels to this. the most recent one, A Christmas Story Christmas, released this year, was the only one i enjoyed. it's about Ralphie as an adult, and it has mostly the same cast as this movie (only the mother was recast to my knowledge).
I'm glad that you enjoyed this. I was basically the same age as Ralphie when I first saw it. It was a family favorite instantly and continues to be to this day. This is one of the very few films that I would change nothing about if I could. The music, casting, acting, costumes, you name it. Everything in this movie to me is close to perfect.
Being from Cleveland this film is a big deal because a lot of the movie was filmed here, specifically the "Christmas Story house" and the downtown and department store scenes..
Me too, sort of. I currently live in Hammond, IN where Jean Shepherd is from. There is a Cleveland St. in the area where he grew up. And while there is no "Hohman, IN", Hohman Ave. is the main street that runs through the downtown area. In the film they used Higbee's to represent the Goldbladt's Dept. Store that was once located on said Hohman Ave.
Welcome to my favorite Christmas movie, Addie! This is an absolute classic: fun, silly, nostalgic, and heart-warming. You mentioned all the Wizard of Oz references, and that's because it came out in 1939, and this movie is set in 1940, so it would have been quite popular at the time. Also, a new HBO movie came out very recently called "A Christmas Story Christmas," set 33 years after this one, and it has almost all the original cast from this one. It's very enjoyable and surprisingly emotional, and I definitely recommend that you watch it....the sooner the better, while this one is fresh in your mind. Thanks for another delightful reaction video, Addie! 😊
I've watched this movie countless times, but it's just this year that I saw "1940" on the decoder pin.
Such a great reaction to a great Christmas movie. 🙂 And we're not even halfway through the twelve days of Christmas, so you had plenty of time. 🙂 And keep smiling that smile. Such a great smile and so much to smile at in this movie. 🙂
Little trivia tidbit: The way they pulled off the tongue-frozen-to-metal-pole gag was a little hole in the pole and suction inside the pole. From the side view of the camera, the tongue being put up to a hole with suction couldn't be seen. The kid did a great job of looking like he was in pain (and panic). I learned that mistake when I was a kid; only with me it wasn't a pole outside, it was a freezer shelf. 😳🤣
A long time ago, I worked in a restaurant that had a very crowded walk-in freezer. After a large delivery, you frequently had to inch sideways while getting to what you needed.
Hey lady fellow employee friend of mine had caused to go in the freezer in the middle of summer. Of course her shirt and bra were soaking wet from the heat. 🙄
Her boobs froze to one of the steel shelves, and she got stuck in there. 😄
@@Caseytify 😲🤣
Addie reminds me of the mom 🤩
U will be a great mom Addie.
You are a beautiful woman
This is my spouse's favorite Xmas movie. Mine is It's A Wonderful Life.
A bona fide X-Mas CLASSIC! SOOO identifiable, especially for anyone from Gen-X, or, older. Jean Shepherd was a GENIUS storyteller!
The director of this, Bob Clark, also directed what is widely accepted to be the first true slasher movie. 1974's "Black Christmas".
Yeah, the movie is set in the 1940s, my parents and stepparents grew up in the '40s and '50s, and I grew up in the '70s and we all recognize this movie as being pretty much how it was when we were kids.
I absolutely appreciate you putting out more Christmas movies after the holiday! I love Christmas so I don't get the "seasonal depression" most people get... until after the holiday, because I really loathe New Years, lol. So you keeping the season alive a bit longer is perfect for me. Please keep doing this in the future, lol.
I am exactly the same way. I love the lead up to Christmas, the baking, the shopping, the decorating, the anticipation (especially in our 8 y/o). Then New Year's seems like such a pointless holiday. Then when we undecorate, the house seems so empty and melancholy. With it dark so early, I get a bit depressed.
Just a little warm water gets the tongue loose with no pain,my little brother did it when he was 6
Hope you had a great Christmas. Have a great New Year and be safe. 😊😊😊
I think it's hilarious that US reactors are always "Meh, a BB gun" and foreign reactors are always "OMG! A BB GUN!!!"
"SONS OF BITCHES! PAPA SAYS!"
Probably the best part of the whole movie.
The first MMA Christmas tackle take-down performed flawlessly by Ralphie. Lol
Addie Christmas Angel 😇. You have the most beautiful expressive eyes 👀. And the faces you make. You are adorable.🌹❤️🌷🩷
**Must do "MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947)"***
Ralphie was also the Scientist named William Ginter Riva from Iron Man (2008), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
There are three sequels to this. Well, the first two aren't really sequels, but more stories from the same author's life with different casts playing the same characters;
Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss (1988) (TV Movie)
My Summer Story (1994) (AKA It Runs in the Family)
Then, just a couple months ago, they released;
A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)
This has pretty much the entire surviving cast (Darren McGavin, the dad, passed away years ago) except for Mom, since Melinda Dillon has retired from acting and didn't want to do it.
On the other hand, avoid;
A Christmas Story 2 (2012)
It's terrible, and has none of the charm of the other movies.
Hi Addie... I'm Canadian, so when you said it was 7 degrees, I'm busy doing calculations, and that's 25 degrees belove freezing, which is about -12 degrees Celcius. Wow, that is pretty cold! Not burtal ocld, but "I don't like it" cold.
Addie, you've seen an adult Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) as William Riva ("Well, I'm sorry. I'm not Tony Stark") in Iron Man and Spiderman: Far From Home.
My bloodhound approves this movie. It's a staple for Christmas movies!
With Presidents Day coming up you should consider The American President with Michael Douglas, Air Force One With Harrison Ford, or My Fellow Americans With James Garner and Jack Lemmon
Hehe.. I got the 'soap' treatment in grade school. Happy to say.. I didn't go blind :p
Nice reaction! It's a classic.. love all the relationships between family members.
Funny enough.. for the new years.. we do have Peking duck and char siu..
The nice free calendar and fortune cookies we get from the restaurant is always a treat.
Haven't yet seen anyone react to a Bishop's Wife or A Christmas Carol(1951 A Simm).. makes me wonder if this is a CR issue or that the quality of the video is an issue. Anywho... happy hollow christmas new year's eve girl :D
Assuming this hasn't already been mentioned, the Wizard of Oz features so prominently in this movie because it is set during the time right after that movie came out.
Ugh 🤮
Great movie, just after 20 years of 24 hours just watching this on Christmas adds up
Edit: The scene where Ralphie is blind with the sunglasses 🕶️ is my favorite part
Stockings have been up for 2 months 😲 I took my Christmas tree down 5106 days ago!
My favorite part of this movie nowadays is the parents.
Now that mine are gone, it helps me revisit my childhood... because that's what real paren... I mean that's what my parents used to be like.
The actor who played the mom Melinda Dillon just passed away in January. RIP
Watching your reactions makes me smile :D
Feliz Ano Nuevo
Hey Addie, as a child of Minnesota who did it many times. And yes it does freeze immediately to the pole or whatever steel object you're sticking your tongue on. It's very simple. You cup your hands from your face to whatever object to your tongue is stuck to and you exhale. The warm breath will take care of the problem. So, as an adult if you're ever just curious and freeze your tongue to a pole that's your exit strategy. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. As always you're awesome ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
Thank you for this Addie, love this movie. The next Christmas movie you should review is Arthur Christmas, it's another great Christmas movie. Cheers eh... and Merry Christmas. :)
Some day you'll come accost that "leg lamp," as we all do, and you will surprisingly say. I know where I saw that from. lol Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Addie.
In case no one said it, the kid playing Ralphie grew up to produce Iron Man.
Go back and read the credits.
The X-Files was inspired by Kolchak: The Night Stalker with Darren McGavin.
He played a reporter who comes across the strange and supernatural situations each week.
Had me a Serving of Dove White Bar Once..And it Weren't Chocolate
Absolute staple where I am from considering this movie takes place in my hometown of Hammond Indiana. I only lived a couple of blocks from Ralphie's school. Always end up seeing a lot of leg lamps in the windows during December. Glad you got to enjoy the movie.
You need to do longer reactions, too much cut out but I always love your movie reactions ! Love your nails !
If you want to know something funny. The kid that plays Ralphie grew up and he's the executive producer of the (at least the first one) Ironman movies. He also plays one of the scientists in the movie. Specifically, the bald one that gets chastised by the villain for not being able to replicate Tony Stark's arc-reactor tech and suit. He does reprise that role later in the franchise.
The Christmas Story house is kind of a museum now located at 3159 W 11th St in Cleveland Ohio and can be visited for tours.
Addie, you have to understand that the Leg Lamp is completely a major item on Amazon Prime to purchase. Love ya! Okay, Bye bye!
"Three blocks away, Schwartz was getting his."
Ralphie bears false witness against his friend, just to get the bar of soap out of his mouth for a minute.
What a great kid!
This is my favorite Christmas movie. The sequel A Christmas Story Christmas is great also.
I was reminded of when I was Elementary school and my mom 'borrowed' my BB gun to pop our chickens that were digging in her garden. It didnt hurt them, just startled them away from her plants.
Tongue frozen to metal object in sub zero temps : It is very real . The trick is to use lots of saliva which is at least above freezing temperature or else regular water poured onto the metal object above the tongue . you just need a few degrees warmer to free the tongue without leaving a yard of skin behind
I used to watch the A Christmas Story marathon's ever year when I was a kid.
Being from the Cleveland area, it's one of the movies that we're proud of being shot in Ohio.
"Soap...poisoning" *pause and old man howls* will never not make me bellow laugh! McGavin is my absolute favorite character in this movie!
My grandfather's pride joy was the exact same radio as the one Ralphie had. We would listen to rebroadcast radio shows on Saturday nights when I was kid.
Oh I tell you Addie, this is one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies! 🎄
My family and I watch it every year on Christmas Eve as a tradition!
back at that time, lamps such as his "major award" were sometimes put in the windows of houses of ill-repute (brothels) to advertise the services offered inside. Which is a large reason why mom didn't want the pornographic thing in her front window.
In my family, as a kid, we watched this movie again and again, every year. It was so funny, and so wholesome! :))
I’ve seen this movie probably 100 times and I still love it. Some movies just never get old.
Why were they so freaked out by a duck 🦆 with the head still on? Chickens were sold with the head still on. On I Love Lucy when Ricky was making chicken and rice the chickens still had heads
To safely unstick a tongue frozen to metal, one should pour warm water onto the metal above the tongue, to thaw it. If you just yank, you will certainly remove several layers of skin.
How you deal with the frozen tongue is: 1) Pour warm water on it to release the freeze; 2) cup your hands around your tongue and breathe into them to try and release it; or 3) pull hard and rip the outer layer of flesh off your tongue.
Personally, I don’t recommend the third option.
This movie is set in 1939, the year Wizard of Oz hit theaters. That's why the references
TNT ruined this movie by showing it for 24 hours a day on Christmas. It was a true classic before they overplayed it for so long. It got to the point where I didn't even want to watch it for close to ten years. But now that I have been away from it for a while I might be able to enjoy it again.
its a christmas tradition for me and my family to watch this every christmas... Absolutely amazing movie
Every time I see A Christmas Story it also reminds me of a hilarious story Jean Shepherd, the narrator, told on his radio show about the time the army sent him and his unit to Morse Code school. He was a terrific storyteller and this one was pretty frickin funny. 😄
