Gavin Harrison: Protean Bonus feature

- In late 2011, SONOR and Gavin began working on the 'Protean' project with the goal to create a snare drum that is as musically versatile as Gavin himself. The name 'Protean' comes from Greek mythology meaning "versatile" and "diverse." Gavin wanted this snare drum to be a daily workhorse instrument that can be quickly altered to suit the musical situation.
In this bonus video, Gavin concentrates on tuning methods and sound, talking about the flexibility of his new signature snare drum models.

Getting tuning tips from this guy is the best you can get. Gavin arguably has the best sounding drum kit on the planet.
Gavin is a gentle man and a scholar. I know he means every word that he speaks. Thank you Gavin, I am going to buy this snare.
I could listen to Gavin all day. The guy is simply fascinating. Great snare drum as well by the way! :)
That drumset is absolutely beautiful
The music in the background is amazing!!
Every single Sonor Drum Kit I've seen Gavin use is utterly gorgeous.....I need one! :D
This guy Gavin gets it 👍🏻. Knowledge, simplicity, design & engineering. What would be cool instead of red would be glow-in-the-dark rubber grips-tips.
Man. You can just feel the thought and passion being put into it. Lovin' everything about it.
Hey Gavin, I'm a piano tuner of 40 years experience, id love to chat with you about general tuning theory and practice ! 😁
Protean 12 " my Review... Really great quality drum looks better than you would think close up ,bottom bearing edge is the sharpest you will ever see anywhere WOW *how they do that i dont know* snare throw is perfect!!!! ...But....(Damper ring set are made a bit to large to fit in the S hoops on 12 version ) ..DRUM ...Score 9.8 out of ten... Dampers Score 3 out of 10
Great idea to put rhythmically dense jazz rock as background music! It isn't distracting or nerve-wracking at all and actually enhances my concentration of the important tuning information Mr. Harrison is sharing.
I am interested in purchasing the snare drum spring kit, is there such an option because there is only a snare without this kit
Do you mean the throw off?
11:19 ...now thats some great video editing ;D i love ti
8:34 Thanks, Gavin, for letting us guess your bottom snare settings (from the height of its hoop)!
You're used to fitting a weel to your car - congratulations, you're there!
If it is possible to send me a link to a microphone clamp for sm57 on the protean snare 14×5.25 mounts
Please tell me what the background music is!!! Is this from his work with that classical pianist?
05ric for some of it just without vocals
Hi gavin I have the Drum Dial device and I wanted to know how much to adjust the snare on the bottom and top
He says usually he will tune the top head of the snare to fit between the first and second tom. As for the bottom he says almost as tight as it can go. I have the protean snare and for the bottom head it can go super tight that you end up ripping the head so beware.
Gavin has a "blue collar" attitude about the drums that's refreshing!
"It is a black science"...
I knew he was a wizard of some kind!
Such a well thought out snare and so well explained. I may never be worthy of such an instrument, but I can atleast tune with two keys on more common shells.
do you have to buy the snare to get the drum keys or can you order them separate?
I wish I could afford this....great concept...
Great invention
Which Remo heads does Gavin use on his Sonor Kit?
Vintage emperor coated on the first 3 and normal coated emperor on the floor toms. Clear ambassador for all toms on bottom. CS coated on snare and ambassador snare side. He sometimes varies on the toms from normal to vintage emperors. Also clear P3 on the kicks 90% of the time.
@@oreothebest Thanks for responding!
@@friedemannknopp1306 a year late but hope it helps! I’ve tried the vintage emperors myself and the name vintage doesn’t lie!
You rule Gavin! now must get my daily dose of protean
More nervous music in the background please !!
Techs have drills for guitar tuning. Why not drums. Someone needs to invent a drill with a meter on it to show the torque. Otherwise just a torque wrench? Won't work?
They have those now, and a similar thing called a drum dial. All preference though.
Would the keys fit Designer rods? If not should make some ;)
i freakin love the hoop
It's Where Are You Going by Gavin and 05Ric.
What's the songs in background called?
What are they if you don't mind asking? :D
Do you Know the price?! How Much?
Ah, I want the violet and pink stripped snare drum!
I've got blisters on me fingers
so smart man!
drum key problem ....i have them and the rubber ends break lose and slip around on there own : / super glue wont even hold them in place.so back to square one.
GAVIN'S GOT BLISTERS ON HIS FINGERS!
i know what drumkey he is talking about, you that "criss-cross pattern" on top of it....
I NEED THE CLIP ON SNARE WIRE FUNCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on Thomann.de you can purchase it individually :)
Gavin DOESN'T have blisters on his fingers thanks to Sonor :D
I hope those drum keys get sold seperatley, I'd get a lot of use out of those.
Ive got blisters on my blisters
Well, appreciate your Tips - but they price of you premium Snare is exaggerated. Even if its sounds inviting.
i think 700
he works for a living
And this is simply how you TQ a cylinder head on a car
this is NO Horst Link snare.........lol.
its really ugly
Wha's this BS "musically versatile" All hype and marketing. Give me a break -will ya?
It's not "hype and marketing". Musically versatile is just having the drum be able to fit into almost any style of music based on it's sound, and qualities.
Yeah , yeah. Tell your story walking.
Musically versatile seems a pretty accurate description. There are many features on this drum that are unique to it and changeable quickly and easily. I do believe the different snare wires may be so minor that you can barely hear the difference but that's the point: there are subtle differences in musicality that can be achieved though what this drum includes. Being able to change snare wires much quicker due to the unique bottom rim, the s hoop allowing dampening rings not to fall out during playing.
If you don't like the drum or the marketing, that's fine! But to call it bs seems kind of silly don't you think?
I'm free to call it BS. You're free to think that me calling it BS is silly. There's so much hype with drum products these days it makes me nauseous.
This guy reminds me of the guy on Spinal Tap. "See -look -most amps go to 10 -but mine goes to 11. It's like having 10 -but one more".
