Just use a Mastercard. I traveled for a week in the Netherlands without obtaining any euros. I paid a small fee, maybe .50, per transaction.
Tip 11 recently happened to me. Even though I paid off the amount I used + the adv fee, i was charged credit interest a month after 😢
Your tips are amazingly helpful. Thank you for the honesty. Do you know, if EC ATMs (red E, blue C) are reputable or trustworthy for US cards? I see them frequently. I have heard reports that some ATM (not sure which ones) eat the cards from the US, and it's really difficult the replace the confiscated card. How can we avoid this?
EC ATM's should be good to use. The one's I would avoid are the independent ATM's such as Travelex, Euronet, Moneybox, Your Cash, Cardpoint, and Cashzone. These are often found near bank ATM's to confuse you and might even say "Free Cash Withdrawals". Don't fall for it. They are riddled with extra fees. Always use bank run ATM's just outside that bank and always withdrawal during bank hours so if you run into any issues, such as your card being munched up, you can go inside and ask for help.
Thank you very much. It's just so difficult to be anywhere during banking hours as a tourist on the trains. That's the beauty of the scam.....catching tourists, who don't have time to visit an ATM during banking hours. Thanks for the advice. I shall seek ATMs which are aligned to banks and only visit them during banking hours. My search begins.@@BenDreamVacations
What if you use Betterment ATM card at any foreign ATM machine to avoid foreign transaction fees?
I am not familiar with Betterment but it looks like they reimburse atm fees worldwide.
Don't EVER use a EuroNet ATM.
