  • The Legacy of Frankie Beverly (1946-2024)
Philadelphia native Frankie Beverly, born on December 6, 1946, passed away on September 10 at the age of 77, according to a statement from his family.
Frankie Beverly was born to parents Howard Beverly and Ella Beverly.
He is survived by his son, Anthony Beverly, and two grandchildren.
Beverly’s career spanned more than 60 years, during which he helped shape soul, funk, and hip-hop, influencing multiple generations of artists.
Maze rose to prominence in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, releasing nine gold records. Their most iconic songs include “Joy and Pain,” “Before I Let Go,” “Happy Feelings,” and “We Are One.”
In 1981, Maze’s Live in New Orleans, recorded at the historic Saenger Theatre, became one of the greatest live albums of all time. The album remains synonymous with Black cookouts and family gatherings.
Beverly and Maze were embraced by New Orleans and became staples at Essence Fest and Jazz Fest for decades.
Though Maze never received a Grammy, Frankie Beverly earned profound respect and tributes throughout the music industry, including a 2009 tribute organized by his son to honor Maze’s contributions to R&B.
His passing comes just months after announcing his retirement with a farewell tour. Special guests like The O’Jays and The Whispers joined him for his final sold-out show in May at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Nearly 14,000 fans, dressed in his signature all-white, came to honor the music legend one last time.
Frankie Beverly may be gone, but his music and legacy will live on forever.

@@SmilingGoldfish-du5ej You are so right they never will. Do not have the least thought in their so called brain what to do. Look at how Beyonce trashed Frankie Beverly's classic legendary song putting vulgarity in it. Frankie only sung beautiful words and beautiful music. Loved him. May he rest now. A job extremely well done.

Frankie Beverly & Maze were one of the classic R&B groups in the 70s. They were iconic! They say celebrity deaths come in threes. First it was James Earl Jones, Frankie Beverly, and I'm wondering who's going to be next to go home to be with the Lord.
