  • When we include a "bass knob" remote dash control in a car audio install we want it to be integrated and part of the control panel in the vehicle. We could just drill a simple mounting hole, but how can we make it look like the controller is meant to be? In this video I add a controller for the AudioControl ACR-3 in the CAFJetta build!

    That looks awesome, back when I did custom installs it was, MDF, fibreglass, body filler, that laser cutter and 3D printing would have saved me months and years of sanding 😂

    Also I have to thank you for making your video about the cable flange you use for the powercable through the firewall this is the best idea really reassuring

    Done that for those and radar detector hardwire mute controls. Typically used the actual knockout plate itself and just drilled holes to support the leds. Hot glued the PCBs in on the radar detector mute module and the LEDs would shine through. Bass knobs are a bit easier since they bolt to the panel itself as long as it’s not too curved.

      Yes, bass control all done with dremel.Lasers were not even available at the time.Only did it once after that I couldn’t justify its use. At the time it was controlling 2 x 18” Petra Pro. Those are stage speakers that dominated Orion, alpine, mtx, punch, Sony, blaupunkt woofers only existed.
      They were in a 92’ Z28, (last year before body style change) with the doomed back window. I’m 47 now and was 16yrs old when I started using my craftsmanship to build custom boxes back then to utilize very little space or however much the owner allotted me.
      I kept getting kicked off Sonics property for shaking their awning. I could flip a cassette tape on my roof.
      I’m convinced Crutchfield stole my rear swing door boxes in Tahoe’s and Yukon’s. I didn’t have the income to patent anything, but I had those built over a year in a half before they started selling exactly molded boxes exactly the same. Some agree some don’t but I’m convinced.

    Love the attention to detail you put into everything you do. I have a question when it comes to bass knobs though. Currently have an lc2i pro (bass roll off fix) and an epicenter in my b&o f150. Was wondering if there is a dual rotary potentiometer similar to the acr-4 that comes with the microcenter that can accept two inputs to control both the lc2i and the epicenter? Just looking to clean up my setup a bit going from two bass knobs to one dual rotary knob. Thank you for your time.

    This might seem gawdy but has always done me well, I put the bass knob somewhere factory in the dash if it's not noticeable, if it sticks out I usually hide them either under dash or low on the center console twords the seat out of any area of movement. Sometimes ad an additional kill switch on the amps, while not good for the amps sometimes nessecary to avoid s ticket lol

    I usually try to reuse as much as the OEM plastic cover blanks as possible. For Bass Knob, I often move the LEDs by desoldering them and keep the knob on a single plastic blank, recessed when possible, then the LED goes on the next or are kept discarded because they are usually way to bright for night driving.

    On one vehicle the bass knob is in the ash tray. Lid folds down and I don’t smoke so that area isn’t used anyways. Another vehicle I used a pac bass knob and took it apart and put it in a small panel on the side of the console on the drivers’ side. My third vehicle it is in an unused spot in the headlight switch. All are nice and out of the way.

  • @thebkg
    @thebkg 3 роки тому

    FYI, for the many who don't have access to 3D Printers and Laser CNC's, there are small companies popping up these days that have all of those tools. Just design what you need in Sketchup with exact measurements, hole sizes, and the measurements of hole placement on each piece, then take that to a 3D Printing company. This way you can make something just as custom as Mark here without needing to invest hundreds of dollars (or more) on the tools to achieve it.
    Granted, if you think you'll make custom pieces 3 or 4 times a year you probably should consider making the investment since you'll spend at least that much or more on having someone else print them. But if you're just needing things printed for one project then going 3rd party would likely be the way to go.
    Just a thought.

    I have a question it’s none related to this video but i own a 2017 infiniti q60 and recently upgraded the none bose factory sound system to some focal sound system but I honestly yes theres a big change in quality but I feel like i need more speakers since i just have 6 speakers and it just feel like the tweakers are working hard and can definitely feel where the sound is coming from which is something i dont like anyway my question is does more speakers equal more like a surround sound feel where you don’t feel that the the sound is coming from that speaker if that makes sense

    • @ixionn563
      @ixionn563 3 роки тому

      Well music is still a stereo (2 channel) sound, so it wouldn't be real surround sound. I think what you're trying to talk about here is sound stage, which is where you perceive the sound to be coming from. If your sound system was installed properly, you can use the fader control on your stereo to make your front or rear speakers louder. Doing this will effectively move your sound stage and may achieve the effect you are looking for.

When I finally looked at it years later, I got to work. 1 screw, popping out a small panel, and drilling a hole, I mounted it all myself. Would have taken them 5 minutes, took me about 25 since I have no experience.

It is where I have out a switch to the amplifier and just perpendicular to it (a little toward the left), I have mounted the bass control knob. Just to avoid any major modifications to the panels as I have a 2010 1 8l Toyota prius. Your OEM look modification looks rather slick though. Good job mate 👌

    Hey dude wat is the bes converter from 120 volts to 12 volts , with good amps and watts to use a car audio system at home

    • @ixionn563
      @ixionn563 3 роки тому

      There really isn't a great option at the moment, not one that's cheap. Keep in mind the most wattage you can pull from a North American wall outlet is around 1600 watts, that would be the total limit of your system not even considering amp efficiency. The best option I can think of right now is a PC power supply, the largest you can buy being 1600 watts. The thing is a PC power supply that can actually provide that much power will cost a lot, and it would have to be modified to put it's full wattage out. You're probably better off investing in home or pro audio amplifiers to run your car audio gear, or running a very small car audio system on a cheap PC power supply.

    I love your vids, definite sub. Tons of great ideas, information and techniques. This knob install looks nice and far be it for me to criticize, but what you might consider to level it up is match the shape/profile of the OEM inserts and machine a flat recess for the button to fit into, using more of a muted/matching finish. Probably just my preference but this could have achieved a more stealth/OEM look which is my jam.

    years ago when i was doing car audio for a living i used to take the kenwood and bazooka tube control knobs apart and custom mount them if the customer wanted them exposed. Used to build mounts for the boards out of sheets of plastic and epoxy them in place.

    I have not yet, but my next build will have a bass knob, and thanks to this video I may have the courage to custom mount it in a 'factory' location.

    I love cars that have the pop out button locations. I've used them to mount control knobs and switches plus indication lights. Everything from simple drilled hole to shaping and paint. These are defined by time, expense and overall look.

    I made my bass knob to sit into my ashtray. I could close it and open it just like normal and it looked like it was never there.

    I just have mine mounted under the dash but I really love the factory look that this gives I might actually do something like this in my install I have a knob for the brightness of my dash lights and I might be able to squeeze in the bass knob somewhere next to it.
