  • Finally managed to best Vegas and finish this. In which Matthew Michael Murdock has severe scrupulosity and it starts to show in earnest.
    I really can't say enough for how amazing it is to me that Daredevil actually tackled the subject of spiritual drought and scrupulosity without having Matt outright permanently reject his faith. It's already so rare to have religion taken seriously in character writing, and after watching relevant scenes from all three seasons, it was handled so well. When I started watching Season 3 I was initially irritated with Matt, but as we found out more and more about his childhood and exactly how much he'd suffered and for how long, I regretted being irritated with him because his reactions were more than understandable, they were 100% justified. And that's a testament to the writing team and the performance of Charlie Cox. It's a struggle I understand well because I've dealt with it myself for practically my whole life, and it really is incredible to get to see what competent and passionate writing can do with the topic.
    The voiceovers are a little iffy in this video, so I'll try to add cc as soon as possible.
    Anyway, Vegas is giving me grief, and there's a possibility I might wind up moved out, but I have another computer and I'm trying out different free softwares because I don't feel like buying a new professional software, lol. Trying out Shotcut for the moment. It seems competent enough but we shall see.
    I hope you enjoy this video in the meantime.

    This video speaks to me, on a level I can't explain to you. I hated season 3's take of him because it's so typical of humans to turn around and hate God after the horrible things that happen. To me, it was taken out of context. It wasn't hatred of God for Matt it was hatred of himself for being conflicted between who he should be and who he was. How his emotions with truths that revealed themselves just added to that anger so then he reflects that anger at God. I loved loved, how Fisk was essentially the Devil in his head, the accuser and how your video shows this. I was extremely irritated that they misinterpreted the story of Job from Matt's mouth when Job's story parallels Jobs quite well. You can see the Devil working through Fisk, the human one and the idea of him trying to twist and break Matt- turn him against God completely. I was very angry that they ended it ambiguous with his faith when Daredevil is literally one of the most faithful marvel people. I felt like they tried to make him too relatable instead of being an inspiration like Job.
    Enough of that, this video shows his turmoil from all the hell he goes through- just like Job and how he proves himself by not killing Fisk...despite having every reason to do so, all the pain, all the loss he rose above that. I love how you edited these events, and these thoughts in his head from that season and the past seasons the slow descent into essentially quiet madness that Matt had and how the death of his only father figure left and the sacrifice of a foolish FBI agent brings him back and makes him see that everything that happened made him into who he was- made him able to be able to help people and that even in the darkness God works. That was how I saw it and that's how I see this video. His mother's quote at the end was a nice touch.
    I've been trying to think of how to comment on this video for weeks, because it's just so powerful to me. Maybe it's because I relate to him because of my own faith and fighting with who I am vs who I felt I should be because I couldn't stop myself from being who I am. However, even without this relation the quotes and the flow of the video...Is just so beautifully tragic and heartbreaking and yet comes back to being hopeful at the end. I love it. Great song choice too. I didn't realize the lyrics at first because I was watching with the quotes and song as background but watching with the lyrics I can see you still have that amazing ability to sync both words and quotes and scenes altogether. You are still one of my favorite editors. Thank you for making this and in a way helping me wake up too.

      Thank you! I completely understand being kinda turned off to how Matt was in this season, certainly in the start of it, but I didn’t see the sort of misinterpretation of Job as being the writers speaking-that was *Matt* misinterpreting it. Then when you see the flashback scene with him and Father Lantom in 3x02, he’s very cryptic and sharp and voices several red-flag religious comments. Taken in context of the rest of the show, with how long Matt was abandoned after his father’s death, how everyone else he had deserted him and/or died, how he has always had a tendency to blame himself for things or to worry in borderline overdramatic ways about his own responsibility and guilt and goodness-it’s easy to infer from all this that he has scrupulosity, though the word itself is never said. I was somewhat frustrated with him when S3 started, but by the time we got to 3x09, and we see that Maggie abandoned him, too, and Father Lantom let it happen-despite it being a delicate and ambiguous situation where neither of them really had much of a choice-I regretted being irritated with Matt because I felt that everything he’s feeling is justified. So maybe his comments were harsh-but that’s what I love about the story of Job. Matt tries to spit at Job because he’s angry, but if he would re-read the story, and actually try to listen objectively and push past whatever messed-up ideas his wounded conscience got the first time he read it-Job is pretty harsh with God, too. He never curses Him, but he does say things to God that would be shocking to most casual Christians today.
      But the reason that Matt, and Job, were both so broken and angry, is because both of them genuinely believed in God and trusted Him. Evil always feels like a betrayal to goodness, so to some extent that bitterness is natural. Any large amount of suffering for a long time has a tendency to wear someone down. It’s easy to stay good when things go bad once or twice, but when it’s over and over your whole life? It can feel like a repeating cycle, and you have to wonder 1. if God cares what happens to you, 2. if He does, if He will not intervene because it’s ‘your job’ to fix yourself, or 3. He *can* help, but you’re blocking Him somehow with your behavior. Or 4: bad things happen to people who don’t deserve it sometimes and while God does not always stop this, He doesn’t enjoy it.
      What I love about the Book of Job is that it gives a sort of sense-unique in the Old Testament-of God being willing to accept a sort of equality with man. Does God strike Job down for his bitterness in declaring stubbornly that he has committed no sin to deserve the torment he’s getting and demand that God explain? No. All He does is come down when Job is demanding an explanation and defend Himself by saying “I am God.” And that’s enough for Job. Matt’s to the point that he can’t be consoled by words anymore. I like that it’s a gradual process for him to get past his anger with God that maybe he himself isn’t aware of, and that by the end of the season he’s finally attending masses again and he can talk about God without bitterness. It would feel shoehorned and forced if they kept shoving the blatant ‘deep’ religious conversations throughout the later action, so I loved that without having to tell us in so many words, we know that Matt does not abandon or lose his faith in the end.
      Just on principle, I don’t know if you’ve ever read it, but I recommend you look up The Book Of Job essay by G.K. Chesterton. It’s one of my absolute favorite meditations on that book of the Bible, and I really think it’s relevant to any discussion of the struggle of the Christian with spiritual drought or endless bad circumstance and bitterness toward God. I loved every bit of reading it because it’s so well thought out and enlightening, and it definitely inspired some of my thought process in making this video.
      Anyway, thank you again for your consistently in-depth comments-they always make my day to see and read. (◕‿◕✿)

      Brooooo, Matt makes MUCH more things when Elektra dies in comics. He really got bad. But it isn't only for it. A lot more things happened with him, a lot of more shit and a lot of more suffering, so his personality being turned from an arrogant and infantile superhero to a melancholic and cruel vigilante has more motivations there (and Elektra's death is the LAST of it). I agree that the series kinda exaggerated, because much people can think that Daredevil's super power is the superhuman senses or the fighting skills, but no, it's his indomitable will (that is just ABSURD. He can resist Killgrave and control the absolute carnage) and he never would be so upset to a point that he would want to kill himself only with Elektra's death or Fisk's new "prision".

    Foggy and Karen are terrible to Matt and I hate it but they’re great people with good intentions and I can’t hate them but I can say that they’ve been terrible friends who don’t deserve Matt and they need to accept him, all of him.

    • @lucasmiguel4734
      @lucasmiguel4734 3 роки тому +4

      Heeeeell no, you got the wrong idea bro. Reading the comics you can have a better idea of what they mean to Daredevil's story. But watching the series you can see that it isn't their fault, being Matt's friend is REALLY hard. On the 98 run, Bullseye kills Karen in the church (and that's why everybody got so tense when saw him fighting Matt in the church and killing Lantom, you can see a lot of references there) and you really can see that Foggy and Karen are the ONLY thing that makes Matt feel more...human. They are his connection to reality. And when Karen dies, you can see this humanity getting out when he goes after Mysterio and watch him killing himself without even complaining or trying to stop him. Daredevil is a character that suffers and feels a lot of it, until he gets used to it and just doesn't even cares anymore. I think the only things that kept Matt alive when Karen died were Foggy, Natasha (Yep, the Black Widow), Spider Man and the promise he made to Karen (that he never would stop being daredevil). If it wasn't that, he would certainly had killed himself (he ALMOST did it)
