We have enjoyed working with several Henry rifles as well as their new Big Boy revolvers. We’ve highlighted the .30-30 X Model tactical lever action. This time, we’re looking at the .45-70 X Model.

45-70 government is the only government I trust
My 1895 Cowboy will flat demolish anything in reasonable ranges with the 405 grain Core-Lokts! (To include dainty shooters' shoulders!) 8.1 pounds of Iron and Wood, 26 inch pipe.
Those are great rifles!
For as much testing as I have done on game with all different loads in the 1895, I truly believe that trapdoor load, core-lokt , and equivalents really can take most game with a good shot.
Though the hotter loads are fun to mess with.
@@45-70Guy - I agree! After all, the original loads pretty much wiped out our native bison and elk.
I was lucky enough to go on a bison hunt a few years ago and I wanted to test out the standard 405g in a hard cast, mine were right at 1600 FPS.
On a 1200 lb bison it went maybe 20-30 yards after being hit at at roughly 75-80 yards.
I was impressed to say the least, and it just reinforced that idea that the old setups still are very effective.
@@45-70Guy - excellent! I've been considering doing the same thing! Bison/buffalo meat is excellent, and it just seems to be a quite fitting use of the good old 45-70 cartridge. BTW, love shooting cast bullets from mine as well.
40gr reloader 7, held down with a thin paper wad, 405gr cast bullet. One of my favorites for my 1875 C Sharp's rifle. For fun put 10 gr unique behind that bullet and enjoy a light load that will still put them in at 100yds.
I have the Henry X in 45/70 and I love it. Hands down my favorite most versatile rifle. I hand load for it with the FTX bullets and about 2k fps velocity. So far I have only used it on wild hog and it certainly does the job. I've taken 2 and dropped them in their tracks.
The 45-70 is a fantastic cartridge, and I agree that it is very versatile option. You got a really nice rifle in the Henry Model X.
Years ago when I worked as a PH in the Klaserie, I had a number of american clients come to hunt large African Game with the 45-70. From first hand experience, we quickly started to limit shots to under 75m when shooting anything larger than Kudu, and Cape Buffalo to under 30m. Lots of the ammo had dismal penetration, never saw one of them pass through a buffalo cow, let alone through a bull.
I would think that only a heavy, hard bullet would penetrate adequately on something like a Cape Buffalo.
Mine is the Henry Big Boy brass, octagon bbl. Have a Centerpoint 1-4x20 circle dot illuminated lpvo. Broke my heart to scope it but these old eyes have trouble with the brass front sight. It came with gorgeous wood furniture. I love it.
i goot my 45-70 X last December love it i have it topped with a hawke vantage 1x4x24 it shoots great
I’m very excited for the in-depth 45-70 series. I’m prepped to hand load some rounds in the near future for my Marlin 1895 SBL. Berrys, FTX, and MonoFlex bullets on hand and ready to do some load development when time allows. Thanks again for the great content. The X model is a solid platform, I’ve got one in 44Mag.
We've done a couple of articles re the 45-70, one was just this past summer after an Idaho bear hunt in which three of us had Marlin 45-70's. The other was a couple of years ago, loading the 45-70 for hunting. A quick search of the Ultimate Reloader web site will get you to the written articles and the videos. I can't seem to successfully post links to them here on UA-cam. And yes, more 45-70 loading coming up from us!
@@guyminer3168 I’ve watched the video multiple times. It’s great! I need to go back and re-read the articles. Thanks for the great knowledge!
@@chandlerking88 - Thank you!
That's one on my list I love to buy
gotta check out the rangerpoint furniture upgrades.
I have the Ruger/Marlin 1895 Trapper and it is a ton of fun to shoot. I have been using the Hornady 250 grain factory while I build up my brass supply and wait to find extra large rifle primers. Hoping you will try different brand primers and are the magnum primers better in cold weather.
Very nice scope. Can't afford it.
For quite a few years now I've relied on the little 2.5x Leupold for my 45-70. It's lightweight, affordable, rugged as all get out and has a whopping 4.9" of eye relief, which is really welcome when shooting heavy loads from my Marlin 1895.
In one of you earlier videos (a year ago?), I asked if you would share your source for the Delrin rod shown in that video. Thanks.
Still flinching Gavin!! maybe need some dry firing practice.😀😀😀
I need load data for an 1873 trapdoor.
I'd highly recommend going to Hodgdon's Online Reloading Data Center. They have three different levels of handloads, including loads for the Trapdoor rifle. BTW, some of those "trapdoor" loads are surprisingly stout. I'd certainly hunt with them.
The aesthetics seem off because of the gigantic scope.
Needs a low profile dot or an LPVO with capped turrets.
I very rarely shoot it but I have the great, great, great uncle of the Henry. I have a Winchester 1886 45-70 with an octagon barrel and full length tube magazine I checked the serial number and found it was made in 1895. I can get kinda hard in your shoulder because it has the original curved butt plate.
Have mine setup with red dot and 3x magnifier.
Also, were hand load tests going to include black powder loads?
Guy rocking the flag suspenders and USA shirt. Good man.
Thanks! :)
Bring back the .444 guy..!,
.45-70 is an extremely voluminous case. That bad ES on the subsonic is because the case fill is basically non-existent! I can't image the grain load, unless it's something like trail boss. My lowest plinking round is around 33 gr. IMR4198 and the case sounds like a salt shaker.
I'm thinking the same. It's a big case without much powder in it for those subsonic rounds. Unless... it's something like Trail Boss. That stuff takes up a fair bit of room.
Had 43 gr of 3031. Had some hang fires. Tapped them before loading (Sharps) and no more issues, but have bumped up the minimum load to 45 gr because they did not have any issues.
Thank you for videos on these types rifles. The 45-70 is one of those versatile cartridges. I would like to see you do a 'Believe the Target' style video featuring Dave Gullo of Buffalo Arms Company. Dave is a multiple champion with these larger bore rifle cartridges, he's won the Quigley Match long range match 4 times. Like yourself also manufactures equipment for our industry.
It would be interesting to compare against the 360 buckhammer...
45-70 Government a great versatile cartridge shot from Spencer, Sharps, Marlin and Henery rifles. Kills everything in North America and beyond. Great video with the outstanding Henery rifle.
Great video once again. Thank you
I wish they had an 18inch or even 16inch 45-70 X Model
Sweet setup, wish we could use suppressors up here .
Canada?
I shoot my (Marlin) 45-70 strictly for fun. I love the thumpers. I get a variety of ammo from Black Butterfly. I especially enjoy the 576 grain (and 730 grain that I believe is out of production, but it drops like a rock)
There has to be a bullet mold for that somewhere
If you are hunting within 100-200 yards, could a Aimpoint Micro H-2 be sufficient enough???
That really depends on the individual. I'm okay with an Aimpoint at those ranges, some guys are really good with them.
I wanna be like Guy when I grow up… ❤️the shirt/suspenders! I have a .357X and it’s GREAT.
Am excited to see what chronograph is being blurred 🧐
Superb looking rifle when mounting the scope in the future would be nice to see what your thoughts are on m brace rings thanks
45-70 is a bit much for what I would want. I'm interested in the 44 mag version.
Would you hunt with the subsonic rounds or are those just for defense?
I've heard from folks in Texas hunting wild hogs at night with them. They're talking about making several kills before the hogs figure out that something is happening.
I have the x model in 3030 and 44 magnum. Love them both. I have the marlin guide gun in 4570 and 450 marlin. Don’t shoot either one anymore. I had them for when I lived in bear country. Since I moved back to Indiana I haven’t shot either rifle anymore.
u should review the b14 wilderness terrain next
🔥❤️🔥🇺🇸
Sounds like you guys are hunting VC tunneling bears
Next you need a Henry Long Ranger 🤔
Model X 45-70 is my favorite rifle. Your setup is nice, quite a bit better than mine. No suppressor as the state I live in tries hard not to be a part of the US. I have a monstrum optic which actually holds a zero on this beast. A load I have enjoyed shooting is 47.3 grains of Accurate 2015 pushing a 350 gr. Acme Hi-Tek bullet. Recoil is solid not as sharp as the Hornady FTX stuff, and it makes steel dance nicely. Only recently bought a chrono but haven't had a chance to get out to shoot with the fire restrictions around here to share any data.
Cantilever mount and a 2.5x scope I have found to be the money for our dark woods and still being fast and no worry of scope bite even for a new user with heavy handloads.
At 150 yards and in the 2.5x fixed seems to be plenty and ultra light.
Worked up a load 15 or so years ago, still my go to for bear hunting 405g hard cast at 1550 fps.
Though have worked up some 350’s, 380’s, to the same point of impact to allow swapping and no change in sighting.
Newest load using 405’s northforks at 1750 FPS which did an outstanding exit hole on this years black bear. Just wish I could retrieve them for more data collection out of a live animal.
Great video guys
Seems that the 45-70 is performing well for you.
One of my favorites to load for just because of the options, and capabilities.
@@guyminer3168 now that I think about it, there’s a mount I’ve been using for years and it was designed for the same 2.5x leupold you liked to use.
I’m not sure how to link a photo to show you, but it allows that specific scope with the generous eye relief to get it just forward of the hammer.
With dovetail rings, super low ones, it’s my favorite setup and still carries well without the scope coming back like a traditional, but also not forward over the barrel like a scout.
Ashley Performance is the company, I have a bunch of these specifically for a bunch of my Marlins.
I am not sure if Versatility is the right term but I would love to have one of these. I will probably step down to a 45 colt due to the cost of ammo. I keep about 500 rounds per weapon but I am very conservitive with it and only shoot for a reason and not just to hear the gun go off. As an Army Veteran who is 275 pounds and 78in tall. I really like the 45/70 but a box of standard 45 "long" colt is a little cheaper than a box of 45/70.
johmsoneod,
You're on to it, there's no "long" Colt.
.45 Colt, period.
Those who think they're showing their intelligence by saying "long" Are ! Dorks . . .
They probably wanna say 45-70 Long Gov't. Scheesch...
☆
Just started casting bullets for my Henry for deer season, I'd love an x model with the smaller lever loop, i just find that larger loop to be hideous, personal preference, I'd probably prefer the wood furniture too but i could deal with the synthetic for a hunting rifle
Yeah I wouldn't buy one with the large loop but this medium loop is acceptable while using with wide hands.
@@JNOSNOW yeah it looks a lot nicer though I'm half tempted to go for it and get another loop to try hammering down to the "small" loop that matches the grip curve like the one I already have, mostly I just want the sidegate loading option
@@deathsicon absolutely have to get the side gate. I would have waited longer and tried to get a newer threaded marlin if the Henry didn't have the gate. It's impossible to reload with a suppressor and/or the muzzle device without the side gate.
It won't bother you so much when you don't have to worry about all those dings and scratches on wood anymore.
Oh yeah the stock isn't horrible but definitely put a handguard on it and a solid quiver and it's a hell of a rifle. The real decision is to put an lpvo or a dot
I just set mine up with a Leupold 1-4 and a Silencerco Hybrid 46. Shooting the Hornady SubX.
Good scope!
How do you compare the Henry vs the new Ruger owned Marlin Trapper, Guide or SBL?
I prefer my marlin 1895 for many reasons but specifically because you can load it way hotter then the hennry.
I cast and reload and I haven't had a 45-70 that can take full power loads in a long time. I think I'm going to have to order one of these and clean the dust off of my 500 grain mold. I have a hybrid 46 that will be perfect for it.
500 grains, that's a lot of bullet! Heaviest I've used in my 45-70's is the 425 gr "Piledriver Jr."
@@guyminer3168 it's a Lee mold. 500 grain and it takes a gas check so you can actually get pretty spicy with it before accuracy takes a hit. It's great for hogs but anything over about 75 yards you can watch the bullet drop like a football.
Great video! Would a red dot work with a gun that has as much recoil as a 45/70?
Gotta do a Long Ranger,, whichever u can get your hands on
So Gavin must have the new Garmin chrono
I have my Henry X in 45-70 with the Fly 45. Just got all my ladder testing for subsonics. Need to get the testing with the Lehigh bullets dine and ill have quiet the package.
As Toby Keith says: I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was
Waiting almost 2 years for my 45/70
that round is always fun! off the top of your heads do you know whats the biggest grain and psi that one can fire?
I'd highly recommend looking at Hodgdon's 45-70 rifle data. They have it broken down into three different power levels for Trapdoor loads (the most mild), Levergun loads for the Marlin 1895 & similar, and "modern rifle" loads - for the Ruger Number One and strong converted bolt actions. They've got pressure data included with their load data. Their annual manual also contains that data. It's mostly what I use to guide my 45-70 handloading.
Someone needs to convince Henry to make the X-model in .45ACP.
Leave the 45/70 alone..Suppressors what next..Men today are not men of yesterday..Oh my shoulder..Mommi.
LOL! Good point. :)
