I think the mimic is actually answering Schaeffers question. It repeats one of his questions back to him and then talks about how it's free. Does this imply that the mimic is intelligent in some way?
I think it just repeats phrases that it heard. It also says a bunch of computing terms that it definitely didn't hear from Schaeffer. This suggests that it had a 'conversation' with the warden at some point.
His definition for the term 'prisoner' is very textbook, like it was pulled from a dictionary or something. It also isn't an accurate answer, given that the creature is very much confined in the facility. I think what happened is that the mimic must've repeated Schaffer's question (that he asked previously) to some kind of computer entity that answered with the the textbook definition of prisoner. Since warden is likely some kind of AI it would probably respond that way if asked if it was a prisoner.
