- in this video we are working on a 2000 vw beetle with a 1.8 turbo, customer complaint is the vehicle wont start, it was towed in from another shop and all they said was that it jumped time and needed a cyl head and timing belt job, I hope you enjoy this video and thanks for watching.
You forgot to disable fuel or spark, the engine was trying to start and that screws up relative compression tests. Great video
Nice catch!
your absolutely right, slipped my mind
+Positive Lead Diagnostics slipped my mind? lol. yet you upload all these mechanic videos? that's pretty basic dude. you must not be a very good mechanic. I definitely wouldn't take my car to you haha
Well Casey. It wasn't a big deal that I didn't disconnect fuel or spark. And honestly the reason I didn't disconnect fuel or spark was because the veh was a crank no start and it didn't try to start until I was shooting the video. The point of the test was to see when our spark was occurring in relation to top dead center and not so much the compression humps. By me not disconnecting the fuel supply, yes it did affect how accurate the test would be if we were looking specifically at the compression and not where spark was occurring.

Great Hunt. Somebody needs a new set of head gaskets.
Sweet diagnosis along with some great Pico and in cylinder shots! Thanks!
That coolant tank was chooching nicely!
Perfect diagnose Tom!.
You made great use of your tools!
Are you going to post the Repair?
customer declined the work, but I probably would not
Have a question. I have a bug just like that color, blown head gasket. Like im watching you diagnose my car right now. I really want to rebuild my engine maybe have a little extra fun (power) to this thing. Is it worth putting money into it and doing a rebuild or is it just a waste of $$$.
Thanks.
Nice, new guy at positive lead diagnostics :D
NOT VERY COMMON BUT IT HAPPENS TO THE BEST........CAUSE THIS ENGINE IS THE BEST BY FAR AT THE WHOLE BRAND MY FRIEND.....
Letting it run to 2bar (30psi) can easily burst the radiator, heater matrix and other plastic housings. Maximum coolant pressure is below 15 psi, the cap releases it beyond that so it doesn't damage other parts.
Great Video. well I guess time to ship to the crusher. it's a 17 year old VW, so most likely the repair cost will be higher that the cost of the car
That's why learning to work on cars yourself is great. Few hundred bucks for a head gasket, head bolts, and a timing kit and it's back on the road.
Hey Tom thx,I enjoyed the vid...awesome job man...and also nice look...cant wait for ur next vid...👍
Hahaha!! Fresh trim!! I love fresh trim!! Over 18, fresh trim!
great diag Tom thanks liked the relative comp waveform scope capture
That was fantastic tom ,well done.
Ste fro the uk.
most excellent video . thanks for taking the time
Nice captures with the Pico Tom, great demonstration
thanks! still getting used to it but what a great tool, the detail is amazing
Great video.
Love your videos man. Nice to have a german channel. !!
Basically, you should check your spark plugs, see which one has coolant residue and that should indicate which cylinder.
Hello today my daughter's 2000 beetle won't start....she was driving on the road, car got hot,all vapor was everywhere, she pulled out wait few minutes and continued driving until the car won't move anymore, I came up to check it out, was coolant all over, fill up coolant try to get it started but nothing cranks but no start, should I change spark plugs or just have a technician look at it...?
Thanks for some GOOD info and brands to go off from sir :)
Always interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing. I am curious; approximately what percentage of cars are misdiagnosed as this one?
I don’t know if you’ve realized, I’m sure you have but fuel should have been disabled on the relative compression test because the partial combustion was throwing off the results. At least this will be good for any one else watching.
Great video if you would have pulled the plugs with the pressure in the coolant tank could you have found the cylinder that was leaking when you took the plugs out thanks again
Ever try having the pressure gauge hookeed up and blowing air into the cylinder using a leak down tester(around 50to, check for a pressure increase on the tester. Cheaper way (but messy ) fill the overflow / pressure bottle to the top with water then blow air into the cylinder, watch out for the geyser lol
a leakdown test would have been a good test to do
Nice dinostics using the borescope.
thought I was on the wrong channel with that shiny mug :))
Another beetle owner that ignored the red blinking coolant light.
Hi Tom when you did a relative compression test did you cut the fuel pump or ignition etc ... I think that the compression was not accurate because it was trying to start I think now what I think happened is the plastic water pump impeller broke or slipped so the engine overheated then blew the head gasket then it melted the side flange then they replaced the part filled the coolant system and the car did not start after could you remove the thermostat then check if the water pump is broken but I could be wrong about the pump it’s just that I saw lots of broken pump.
I did not cut the fuel and I should have to make the relative compression test accurate, your water pump theory could be correct, I have seen a few broken pumps also, another test your could do is pull the small hose off the coolant bottle aim it inside the coolant jug and has some one rev the rpms and you watch for flow out of the hose, just don't do it with a hot coolant system
Try a firstlook pressure sensor on the reservoir and trigger one coil. That is a quick way to find the offending cylinder. The increase in the pressure waveform will match the ignition coil with the firing order.
Totally agree. Not sure why I didn’t do that. I filmed this one a while ago. Might not of had the right adapters to do it
Never listen to previous shops/recovery mans idea of problem as they always go for worst case scenario!. Start with the basics.
true, when I first got the car the battery was dead and with the jump box at first it did sound like no compression, so honestly at first it almost did seem like it was out of time
Excellent job
Nice vidéos and newlook
Hi Tommy, I barely recognize you! Lol.
Nothing better than the Pico Scope! As a tip, when I get an image like the one you got from iATN, I use paint to draw a line to see where the two signals meet, specially like this one that signals are so far from each other on the capture.
Maic Salazar Diagnostics Doesn't the paint mess up your screen...couldn't resist :-)
Hayward's Automotive lol! I use water base!!!
Maic Salazar Diagnostics HAHA
the pico is awesome, yeah it was hard to show and see the reference on my phone, but at the time it was all I had
Nice work Tom =)
Wish you could come fix my beetle!!!!
Hey keep it that way
Nice video bro! I have same problem with my vw jetta 1.8t, i dont understand which one is the real solution to fix a problem????? :(
You’re a genius 😱
great video, where do you get your known good waveforms ?
they were most likely right on previous diagnosis, but customer and pencil pusher department twisted it around or perhaps easier than explaining why a working timing set should be replaced..
someone pressure washing in other bay?
The old beetles were great to work on, I removed the engine from one and changed the clutch put the engine back in 17 minutes single handed.
I wish I had an old air cooled
I had the crankshaft position sensor replaced last year. Now I cant get my car out of park and it shakes while it's on. The EPC light is on.
Why no video on the repair? I learn a lot from you!
The actual repair was not approved
Hey buddy how do I adjust the headlights on 2000 Beetle
In Europe, especially in the less rich parts of it, head gasket jobs are nothing unusual. Mostly because the gasket starting to leak by itself for the vehicle's age, but even after an overheat condition they do that.
Man you are great Perfect video as usual
Is "relative compression test" definite proof of mechanical issues?
it can show a mechanical issue that affects your compression
So, the coolant bottle should have some pressure, but not too much?..i mean, if compared to the radiator whats the difference between those two?
Eventually it would have pressure after the coolant system warms up and usually you can open the coolant bottle when it's at operating temp. You just open it slowly. But not after 15 seconds of cranking Or 2 minutes of idling.
Why did you release the pressure from the pump/gauge. I'd have left it in there save me pumping it up again
yeah that would have been a smart idea, sometimes I don't think lol
I had a whole upper radiator tank blow off in my face and took a scalding hot coolant bath. had a hose let go all over me also. both times were "Chrysler products" with bad head gaskets and the systems loaded with sealers on arrival.
yeah you have to be careful, ive heard of radiators exploding and people getting burned
So the garage that sent was right it needs timing and head ? Isn't that what they suggested ? Since its badly rattling
no the other shop said it jumped time and needed a cylinder head and timing set, however when doing this head gasket job the timing belt and water pump should also be done
I have a 2001 beetle glx turbo...every time I get one thing fixed.. something else is wrong
Qué tal amigo ! Tengo un auto igual y tiene una manguera cortada me podrías ayudar? Gracias
Just before Christmas
Good job
Nice job
See this is my issue, just not a coolant smell. I went to change my plugs and realized I needed a special tool to do it so I put the manifold back on, bolted it up, connected the vacuum lines up and now it won’t start and I smell gas as if the injectors are firing but the plugs won’t fire them. Except the car ran perfect this evening when I parked it.
You figure out what it was?
can i ask you where do u buy the coolan pressure tester
that one belongs to the dealer, but I'm sure you can get one at a parts store
Hey bro nice video
I have Audi TT with same engine it does crank but doesn’t start and obd scan tool found code P0864
TCM communications circuit range performance.
Pls could you tell if I have to replace the tcm or it could be just wiring
Cheers
I would not replace the tcm. You need to find out what your missing (fuel, spark ect..) if the engine cranks. It should be able to start and run even if you had a tcm problem unless maybe it’s pulling the network down. But you have communication With the ecm right?
Positive Lead Diagnostics
Yes it was starting before since I tried to put a second hand cluster in it did not start when I put secondhand cluster I found Immobilizer light on then I took it off and put the old one in it but still doesn’t start I live in country side so locksmith here said he can’t do reprogram the Audi.someone said that the Immobilizer is locked .
Yeah that sounds about right. Sounds like your locked out now. The immobilizer is in the cluster
Thanks for replying brother
Please can you give any idea how it can be fixed.
Maybe install the old cluster and disconnect the battery. Not sure without a factory scantool
good job bro
Why is the crank sync different as the knonw good crank sync ?
probably polarity of my leads
Nice diagnosis Tom! How do you like the Pico?
love it!!
it cranks like a diesel so why not take out the plugs straight away to see if some liquid is causing higher compression
You'll need some form of i d to get into the bar now tommy wolf 😜
What's all that noise
Have 2008 Jetta with a safe light on starts won’t stay running can you please tell me what is wrong??? Thank you
Sounds like an immobilizer issue. Either a key or instrument cluster problem
Positive Lead Diagnostics this car drove me crazy last week I charged the battery then took the cables off and drain the power out of the system
Positive Lead Diagnostics it’s been sitting about a week went out today and it started right up no problem shut it off and stated with the spare key I think it had to lose all the power in the ecu to reset thanks so much for your help
Bernie Smith..
I have two keys for my 2008 Golf...one key starts it ok..
The other key ..i get safe mode..no start...
Try another key...
HC and CO readings out of the coolant bottle will tell me inmidiately that a head gasket problem, took you to long to find out
If I had a gas analyzer I would have used that
Stupid question: Can someone explain how to find good wave-forms on iATN? I have a premium account and I've searched the site but I come up with nothing.
under knowledge base
Yeah, I got that. I just put in the car on this video but I don't see any where that shows waveforms.
Not sure. I go under knowledge base and type in make model and known good waveforms
Thanks, that worked. Merry Christmas
Coolant maybe leaking into the crankcase too
Is that a diesel?:)
17yo vw, nice parts car.
More than likely not a hg but a cracked cylinder head from overheating at some point or from a porous coscast head and not a Germany casted one,
Very possible
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics What did it turn out to be?
Customer did not want to go any further
@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Well that's lame but head tear offs aren't cheap.
Do you work at a carwash
Just jumping in for our story about our 'lovely' 2000 beetle. Might assist someone else? we lost our speedo. Gear changes all over the place! Poor running. The first few models had temp sender UNDER water fill bottle. A SEAL eventually perishes and will PUMP water through the WHOLE electrical system. ( through sheath) Fry the computer, even FILL the rear tail lights with water! We found a VW Tech bulletin on the issue! About 2003 the sender was moved on top of water bottle. Cost us thousands.....so be warned
No more unibomber look
Head gasket and more
Are you old to be working on cars lol by the great vid
25 minutes to reach that conclusion..... good thing you don't do flat rate work 🤣
This is the kind of guy i would stay away from
😂
why the hell would you crank something that jumped time?!!! trying to sell new valves too? thumbs down
It didn’t jump time. That was just a thought because that’s what the previous shop told me. If it did jump time (which it didn’t, keep that in mind) then the damage would already be done and cranking it wouldn’t matter.
