This style of singing is called qawwali and Nusrat was known as the "Shahenshah-e-Qawwali" or "Supreme Ruler of Qawwali". His vocal range was well over four octaves and he was extremely prolific. The group surrounding him are not background singers. To his left is Farrukh, his younger brother and widely regarded as on par with Nusrat in vocals as well as the primary composer and arranger of the songs sung by the group. Farrukh's son is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who accompanied the group in Nusrat's later years. The other men are his students and various instrumentalists who had been part of the qawwali tradition in one way or another for generations.
Qawwali is a Sufi tradition where songs are used to express one's love for the divine, and frequently turn on a phrase or sentence (a motif, as you called it) that is then expanded and expounded on in various ways, both technical and emotional. The way qawwali concerts (and most classical concerts in India) are structured lend themselves to a constant call-and-response, also called jugalbandi with respect to instrumentalists. This experimentation creates a constant tension that can take a basic raaga (scale) or taala (time signature) and stretch it out into a 20-minute piece that doesn't feel long at all. That way it showcases both the technical expertise of the artists and also keeps the audience engaged - especially when they know what taalas and raagas are being used.
South Asian classical music (in all the different genres and subdivisions) is very cerebral and emotional at the same time. From a very early age, most of us kids who are 2nd generation Indians, Pakistanis, Bengalis, etc. grew up associating classical music with dance and/or instruments (tabla, mridangam, harmonium - the drone that was being played in the front, veena, sarangi, and so many more). The emotional appreciation for music is intrinsically tied into the cerebral aspect - the appreciation of pitch control, the ability to pick out the complexities of a solo percussion piece, or the technical excellence shown by the total mastery over a certain raaga.
That's why many Indians, NRIs (nonresident Indians), and desi expats (AKA yours truly) have such highly tuned ears as we show you in the comments. Not all of us can sing like Nusrat, Shankar, or Shreya, but we can all appreciate both exactly how perfect and exacting their performances are as well as how moving they are to the soul - and exactly how much it takes to convey both at the same time.

@Haider Akhlaq I never said it had anything to do with Hinduism. read my post again - I didn't mention Hinduism once. And I explicitly stated that the modern qawwal tradition has its roots in Sufi traditions. There are definitely Hindustani and Carnatic influences in modern qawwali singing, but that in and of itself simply goes to show the depth of the relationships between different styles of classical devotional singing in the South Asian subcontinent.

Aise rehte hain wo mere dil mein jaise zulmat mein noor rehta hai

ab adam ka ye haal hai har waqt mast rehta hai choor rehta hai

ye jo halka halka suroor hai
    This mild intoxication
ye teri nazar ka qasoor hai
    is because of your eyes
    ke sharaab peena sikha diya
    that taught me drinking
tere pyaar ne teri chah ne
    your love and your longing
teri behkee behkee nigah ne mujhe ik sharaabi bana diya
your intoxicating glances, made me a drunkard
Sharaab kaisi khumaar kaisa, ye sab tumhari nawazshain hain
What wine, what intoxication all this is due to your kindness
pilaai hai iss nazar se tu ne ke mujh ko apni khabar nahin hai
you served me wine with your eyes such that I have forgotten myself
teri behkee behkee nigah ne, mujhe ik sharaabi bana diya
your intoxicating glances, made me a drunkard
Sara jahan mast, mast, mast, mast
    The whole world is esctatic
Sara jahan mast jahan ka nizam mast
The whole world is ecstatic, the order of the world is ecstatic
din mast raat mast sehr mast shaam mast
the day is ecstatic, so is dawn and so is evening
mast sheesha mast subuu mast jaam mast
the glass, cup and wine are all ecstatic
hai teri chasm e mast se hai khaas o aam mast
your captivating, magical eyes have made everything every one rich or poor ecstatic
Yun to saaqi har tarah ki tere maikhaane mai hai
Every kind of wine is there in your tavern
wo bhi thori si jo in aankon ke paimaano mai hai
a little bit of that wine that exists in your eyes is in the goblet
Sab samajta hoon teri ishwa kari ae saaqi
I understand your cleverness, the confusing affair you put on well
kam karti hai nazar naam hai Paimane Ka Buss
It is the fault of your eyes gaze, but the blame is put on the wine
teri behkee behkee nigah ne, mujhe ik sharaabi bana diya
your flirtatious looks gazing have made me a drunkard
    mere saaqi saaqi mere saaqi
Oh my beloved , Oh my wine giver
Lehra ke jhoom, joohm ke laa muskara ke laa
Bring it with dancing, waving and smiling
phoolon ke ras mai chaand ki kirnain mila ke laa
bring the juice of flowers and add the rays on the moon also
kyun jaa rahi hai rooth ke rangeen ye bahar
Why are you leaving unhappily when this atomosphere is colorful
jaa aik martaba isay phir warghala ke laa
Just once go and bring it again
Sagar shikan hai sheikh bala nosh ki nazar
The wine goblet is cracked is the sight of a misfortunate reward
sheeshe ko zair e daaman e rangii chupa ke laa
By hiding bring a colorful dress to the mirror
Kehte hain umar e rafta kabhi lottee nahin
They say that age, time which is gone never comes back
jaa maikade se meri jawani utha kay laa
I say that go and bring back my youth
    mere saaqi saaqi mere saaqi
Oh my beloved , Oh my wine giver
Mein ne maana janab peeta hoon
Majesty I aceept that I drink
    zindagi ka azaab peeta hoon
I drink the pains of life
baan ke khaana kharab peeta hoon
I become a ruined and drink
roz e mehshar hasab ho na sake issi liye be hasab peeta hoon
the day of judgement cant be predicted that is why I drink without counting
    mere saaqi saaqi mere saaqi
Oh my beloved , Oh my wine giver
    Jaam hai mahtaab hai saaqi
Oh beloved there is wine and moonlight
    sara mausam sharaab hai
all the atmosphere, season has become alcohol
    baaz lamhat aise hote hain
there are some moments without you
jiss mai peena sawab hai saaqi
in which drinking is reward beloved
    mere saaqi saaqi mere saaqi
Oh my beloved , Oh my wine giver
Achi pii lee kharab pii lee
Drank good , drank bad drank in good times , drank in the bad times
thi aag misal e habab pii lee
Just drank to satisfy fire inside
aadat hai ab to nasha na kaif
now it has become habit, no intoxication and no high
paani na piya sharaab pii li
drank wine, alcohol instead of water
Nasha imaan hota hai suraahi deen hoti hai
Intoxication is belief, the flask jug is the faith
jawani ki ibadat kis qadar rangeen hoti hai
youths devotion to whatever it is colorful beautiful
tumhara husan agar benaqaab ho jaye
if your beauty gets exposed before everyone
beauty is not lifelong if everyone understands this
har aik chehra khuda ki kitaab ho jaye
then every face will become beautiful in this world just like the book of god
jo qaaiday se na ho to fazool hai sajda
the worship without value, respect is waste
adab ke saath khata bhi sawaab ho jaye
Those who live with respect for them even mistakes become rewards
sharaabion ko aqeedat kai is qadar tum se
drunkards are attached to you so much that
jo tum pila do to paani sharaab ho jaye
even if you will give them water it will become wine
Dil us ka namazi ban jaye
Their heart will start to pray
aankh us ki gulabi ho jaye
his eyes will become rosy , rose like
jis ko tu mohabbat se daikhe
the one whom you will look at with loving eyes
    saaqi wo sharaabi ho jaye
Beloved he will become druk, drunkard

Your love is my life, your memories are just like prayers
Tera pyar hai bas meri zindagi
    Your love is my life
Na namaz aati hai mujh ko na wuzu aata hai
Neither I know prayers nor ablutions
sajda kar leta hoon jab saamne tu aata hai
I worship, pray whenever you come in front of me
kyunke bas meri zindagi tera pyar hai
Because my life is only to love you
Mein azal se banda e ishq hoon
I am a true lover , servant of love since the beginning of life
mujhe zuhd o kufr ka gham nahi
I do not care for piousness or religious restrictions
mere sar ko dar tera mil gaya
my head has found your home
mujhe ab talash e haram nahin
now I don’t have any need to search for heavenly place
meri bandagi hai wo bandagi jo ba-qaid-e-dair-o-haram nahiin
my devotion is such devotion that is not bound by mosque or temple
mera ek nazar tumhen dekhnaa baa-Khudaa namaaz se kam nahiin
when I just see you once , by god it is no less than a prayer, its equal to prayer
bas meri zindagi tera pyar hai
My life is only your love
Tera naam loon, naam loon, naam loon

    This mild trance
"Yeh Teri nazar ka kusoor hai"
is a sin your eyes have committed
    "Ke sharaab peena sikha diya"
I've become a drunkard (this is a common knowledge in Islam that consuming alcohol is a sin)

All qwalis are symobls. In this saki "which distributes wine" is reprentive of "spirtual leader" which gives his knowledge
While the intoxication "sharabi" is the state he felt when he got guide
And "whine" is reprenstative of Islam. In sufism, there is saying that spirtual leader can change hearts with his eyes or there is something in his/her eyes...
So in this he is saying that my spirtual leaders eyes gave me intoxication of Islam...

Just one suggestion, when reacting to "sufi" or classical from India or Pakistan, please dont talk when they are singing.
If you want to comment on something you spotted find a right spot to "stop" and then speak. (I wouldn't stop the video though).
Reason I am saying this is because, these genres are to create trance, a whole aura of divine. When you talk over it, you lose it. Maybe try and absorb it first, feel it and then stop and comment on it.
I like the way you break things down. Good job. :)

    Hi Carl,
Love to see you exploring so deeply into the Indian Classical music. Ustaad (master) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saheb is one of the greatest singers to have practiced the qawwali genre and he hailed from Pakistan. The gentleman sitting next to him in the white jacket was his younger brother and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's father.
Qawwals (musicians practising the qawwali form of music) don't just sing for the sake of performances. It's a way of connecting with the almighty and has a high level of spirituality associated. Qawwalis can be easily witnessed across mosques (but not limited to). In Sikhs and Hindus we have Shabad and Kirtan/bhajan genres of music which are again based on the Indian classical music and can be witnessed across Gurudwaras and Temples respectively.
On the point about the long duration of performances, these singers (purists) practise music in some way, every waking moment of the day. It's a part of their personality and comes out naturally without any apparent efforts.
The gist here is that a performance is not the topmost priority for such purists. They live the art they practise. Public performances, fame and wealth are all incidental.

    English Lyrics 👇
    "This mild intoxication
    Is because of your eyes
    That taught me drinking
    Your love and your longing
    Your intoxicating glances
    Made me a drunkard
    What wine, what intoxication
All this is [due to] your kindness
You served me [wine] with your eyes such
    That I have forgotten myself
The whole world is ecstatic, the order of the world is ecstatic
The day is ecstatic, so is dawn and so is evening
The glass, cup and wine are all ecstatic
Because of your intoxicating eyes, everyone and everything is ecstatic
Of all the wines you have in your tavern
Serve me a little from your eyes
    I understand your alluring glances
That cause intoxication, instead of wine
Only your love is my life
Neither I know prayers nor ablutions
I prostate whenever you come in front of me
I am a follower of love since the beginning of life
[and] I do not care for piousness or irreligiousness
My head has found your house
Now I do not search for the mosque
    My devotion is such devotion
That is not bound by the mosque and the temple
    When I see you once
By God, it is no less than a prayer
Only your love is my life
On the day of judgment, I would rise with the scars of your love
Your image would be clinging to my heart on that day
    Because
Only your love is my life
    Your remembrance is my prayer
[and] your wish is my wish
This is the miracle of my frenzy
    That where ever I prostrated
    A mosque was made there
On whom would you inflict pain after me?
It is not nice to play with the emotions of sufferers
It is not good to laugh at the mourners
I lost my heart in [just in] play
    O my heart is gone!
For God's sake change your glances, else
    My heart is gone
I pray to God that you also fall in love with someone
And suffer in separation with hands on your heart
    My heart is gone
I lost my heart just in fun
And got the measure of falling in love
I cry because my heart is lost
[but] why do you laugh, what did you get?
    Okay then…..
To whom would you inflict pain after me?
How would you take me out of your life?
Where would you cast those arrow-like glances?
    Value my friendship
[that] helped you to gain murderous charm
Watch me, O my desire of life!
I am the same suffering "Anwar"
You were not even in your senses at that time
[so] don't argue with me in such a manner
    [but] offer thanks to me
That I helped you articulate yourself
    This mild intoxication
    Is because of your eyes
    That taught me drinking ♥

Hi there Carl, I feel the need to give a little bit of feedback to your video, and please just to stop anyone jumping to conclusions or getting critical before I say anything. ...I just feel that the legend that is Nusrat Saab and your reaction to his work is kinda mis-matched, but in the sense that unless you have been classically trained in Qawaali and this genre of music, you cannot truly appreciate to then be able to give your feedback.
Please don't take this the wrong way as I am sure you are very good in your field but there truly is no comparison and I kinda feel a tiny bit offended when you try to replicate some of the words and verses etc because it sounds insulting even though I know that you do not mean to or intend to cause offence. His work in itself means so much to so many people in so many ways and in a way I'm kinda trying to say that to really appreciate his work is to be able to understand what he is saying and to be able to read "between the lines" as to what Nusrat saab sings about, he was a very prominant part of Pakistan's heritage and it just would be appreciative of people to recognise that.
Please don't be offended to my feedback, I suppose what it means to me growing up with such musical influences and then for an talented coach such as yourself discovering this genre of music, its deep rooted meanings etc, i hope my waffle makes sense and thank you for your feedback.

Ki sharab(alcoholic drinks in general) peena sikha dia

Teri pyar ne teri chah ne, (your love and your desire)
teri behaki behaki nigaah ne,(your wandering eyes)
Mujhe ik sharaabi bana dia (made me a drinker)
Sharab is term for alcoholic drinks in general and sharaabi is the one who drinks

Nusrat is Bruce lee of Music. No one like him will ever exist. The motif "halka halka suroor hai yeh teri nazar ka kasoor hai". Halka mean light, suroor mein pleasure (normally related to when u get a bit high), nazar mean vision but the context here is beloved's eye or appearance and qasoor means due to. So the phrase mean, This constant light pleasure is due to your eyes/or your apearance/or coz of ur glance :)

So why insist on calling him Indian just to appease your (much bigger) Indian subscriber base? You did the same with the Coke Studio Pakistan track. I am all for harmony with our Indian neighbours as love and music don't have boundaries but you must have already definitely noticed that some people take such ignorance a bit personally so perhaps you should be a little more sensitive next time around? 'Indian' is being referred to Indian Subcontinent. Don't get offended. The singer belongs to Pakistan and we are not taking credit for that. Music knows no boundaries. Had he been alive, he would have pitied on you for having such parochial mentality.

Just because of Ur country and American's propaganda, we, Pakistanis are framed as terrorists, yeah we are famous for this one as well.... -_-

OMG Carl thank you so much for recognizing that Jeff Buckley does know this Pakistani artist and his singing Style and also covered his song as well. But also going through Jeff Buckley's documentaries and interviews and listening to all the songs I realize that before listening to this Pakistani artist he sang very much like every other American singers who were taught in a wide range of of styles like Blues, Jazz, Rock and etc, but only when he heard this artist and went to Pakistan did he inherit some of the essence from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan which you can clearly hear in His Grace album. Because if you listen to Jeff's songs before and after hearing Fateh Ali Khan his tone has totally changed. Jeff said it himself that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan style of music saved his life and that the Pakistani artist is his personal Elvis. Unfortunately both great artists died in 1997 only three months apart from each other. R.I.P 😞🙏🏽🙏🏽❤💞💖

Carl, what u mentioned at 14:30 is called Raaga in Indian Classical music. Its somewhat similar to modes in western music. Example Dorian mode in western called Kafi thaat in Indian Classical music. (Raagas are generated from Thaat) each Thaat has one one raaga of its same name so Dorian mode and raaga Kafi are same as far as we see the notes used but still raagas has lot more in it to distinguish it as raags, its not mare scale, briefly like CHALAN, WADI, SAMVADI notes etc etc. And each raaga has its particular time to be played at and lot more :)
I would suggest you to explore little bit on Raagas on net, you will get lot of material.
Search for "What is raag" by Anuja kamat.

Yeah but it's supposed to be treated just as an accompanying instruments because it can't produce gamaks and meend that's why
But nowadays its used as a backbone although you should not depend on it
For a expert (singer)(indian classical) musician just a tanpura
      and a Tabla is enough
But I personally love the overlaying harmonium sound but I don't let it take over the whole ensemble

One the interesting fact was his popularity in Japan, not only for his music but his resemblance to Laughing Buddha! Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948. He was a Pakistani musician and was known for his eccentric style of singing qawwalis which is the devotional music of the Sufis.
