In the US, I use the "Big Mama" rockwool cube, which is 8x8x8. It cost under $6 each at my local hydroponics store, which I can cut into 512 one-inch cubes. So the cost is about a penny each. I can cut it even smaller depending on the seed size, making it even cheaper. You use the same on the previous video and a clip in this video.

@@makeevenbetterlifechoices have you checked Growtopia Hydroponics in Buford? They have the Grodan slabs, 8x3x36 for 15.95. You could cut that into 864 1 inch cubes and be about $0.02 each.

@@pistolschlapper I actually cut into about one inch (25mm) size and use it to start seeds. Saves tons of $$, about 20x less. I think the Big Mama is the biggest out there.

In the states, I literally used to get paid to pick these up at the 'tomato grow shop' for growers, ha.
We pay in the states (grodan brand usually) its 8 to 12 dollars for a 45 pack of 1.5 in blocks, with the paper wrapping of course, which most people dont even like. Thanks for this tip, bud!

Another great video! I've been doing a very similar process but within net pots using a smaller amount of Rockwool suspended in clay pebbles, works very successfully and has a little more reusability of resources.
I've recently designed a 3D printed seed "pelletizer" which allows me to create a perlite/coco mix to suspend/sandwich the seed instead of Rockwool and it's working great so far - germination in 2 (cold) days and 100% germination. I originally tried 100% coco/peat but found, like you, the germination rate was poor - definitely linked to oxygenation or oversaturation of water. Happy to share some information if you'd like.

First time watching your show, great info. As a first-time Rockwool user, I bought my first set of cubes from Amazon, what a mistake, I opened the bag and had my scissors ready to cut and separate, but the first few fell apart, literally crumpled in my hand. Out of a set of 28 cubes, I probably got 6 good ones! So I'm ordering from the link you placed at the bottom.

I had found a really pretty good deal for Rockwool cubes at temu for about 7 or 8 bucks and the amount of them that I had gotten was quite a lot! If I remember correctly it was 100 cubes of Rockwool for 7 or 8 bucks definitely a steal if you ask me!! And I only have about 3 cubes left right now after taking care of my spinach and tomatoe seeds!! I'll probably wait until next year to get more though because I'm finally all done with planting my seeds in the cubes for this growing year!

I love your 'No.8 Wire' style of thinking my Aussie cousin. As long as there is minimal to no compression/compaction of the 'rock wool' when cutting them, there should be no problem with this method. I agree, you are negating the whole purpose of having individual 'rock wool' blocks by having them packed together so close to each other in the grow containers.

Here in Southern USA I find that a grass that grows along bayou waterbanks and also on ditches and waterways are a great sub for this. It forms a tangle of very dense roots. However, they are very hard to cut so I have to use shears. A slab cardboard or paper cutter (With gullotine blade) would be just right to cut dead roots into slabs...

I would love to know what kind of pumps you use. I have been using EcoPlus and was not happy with the 350gpm pump. After one year the flow has been cut in half and you cannot buy a new impeller. I am looking at using a sauna circulating pump and have one on order. It is 2 or 3 times as expensive but have a sauna and have never had to replace it. Immersion pumps seem to last only 2 - 3 years. I am working on 3D printing an impeller for my Ecoplus 350 with rare earth magnets and seeing if that improved the life of them. Also will replace the flimsy plastic shaft with a stainless steel shaft.

I live in USA... rockwool locally is dirt cheap in NYC lol. You must be needing rockwool cubes by the dozens of thousands. Also, if I were you, it would be wise to check the MSDS datasheet for the "construction grade" rockwool, the factory that produces them probably did not meet health and safety requirements that is safe for cultivation of plants that will be consumed/inhaled/smoked or ingested. They might spray some crap into those construction grade rockwool from degrading over time which is not good for planting or what not, you would be surprised what you'll find in the MSDS datasheet.

I would recommend for ease and less fly around, to either use a knife that will cut all of the way through instead of having to go in at both sides, or to cut off from the end and then cut that in half, to look like 2 sticks of butter then cut the squares. It would be a little more work but fibers would stay more intact.

This is the same as Asbestos fiber. Use a N100 Mask. Drodan blocks need to be drained fully 4 times in 24 hours. On a 4" or 5" block, I drive 25 small holes from bottom To top , stopping at 2/3 the way up with 26 small nails mounted on a 5X5 wood board. 1/2 ' thick. Poke holes when block is wet.

      Oh. Sorry.
I meant _moss_ - more specific Sphagnum moss, in a product called Mosswool.
      I've corrected the above comment

There are no glass fibers in Rockwool. All in the name. Fiber-glass. Rock-wool. Two entirely different things, made of different stuff.

This may be a really dumb question, but I am new to the hydroponic growing method, I have wondered if I started seeds in rock wool but ran out of room to grow hydroponically could they be transferred into the soil garden?

Rockwool isn't biodegradable. I guess you can transplant it into soil, but you will have to dig it out after plants dead, otherwise it will just stay there.

Yeah wear gloves and mask when handling those mate, I heard their dust is toxic to humans. Especially in large amounts like that. Maybe look up the safety data sheet.

Its not toxic it's more so that the fibers are so small and they splinter off. Being made from Volcanic ash You could get it in your eyes and your lungs or it may cause skin irritation. Personally I've never experienced these problems from grodan. How ever if you get rockwool insulation from say a home improvement store because it's cheaper than hydro rockwool then yes it is toxic. Back in the day Asbestos was used In the manufacturing process but now it's banned you may find It's still contains formaldehyde used as a bonding agent. That may hurt your plants and you.

@@heywoodjablome5630 only because it's been compressed. Hydro rockwool only allows water through the air pockets, that are created in the rockwool during its manufacturing process. If you were to compress hydro rockwool it too would become water resistant. This fact does not stop people from using insulation rockwool sadly.
