I once heard a sprinting advice from Sean Kelly on eurosport during the tour I believe it was. He said that if you know you are going to crash during a sprint, throw your bike one way and yourself the other to take down as much of the competition as possible. Might have been a joke though ;)
Had the pleasure of watching mark train on the velodrome in Manchester a few months back this vid doesn't do the sheer amount of acceleration he has justice. His coach shouted go before the go sound had finished he'd exploded and was half way round the track. It's insane.
Easily my best “how to” so far from GCN. Like Dan, I'm a skinny climber; but I live in a relatively flat area where many races are decided by sprints. When I fail to instigate or get away with a break, I need to put in solid digs. And there's a surprising dearth of good sprint information on the interwebs. Thanks Cav for being such a gentleman, and Dan for being such a good sport.
Loved the random bloke in the background keeping up. Thanks for the vid, I have a bad habit of sprinting on the hoods as the bars are set up wrong on my bike.. but will try the tips soon.
@@ryzenjmeg Try loosening your grip on the bars a bit. Then kinda let the bike do the left right action as you sprint but just to get the feel for it as it wobbles quite a lot. Maybe try it at low power first and be careful
@TheBeast88 so, is it referring to how the bike moves underneath you? I was trying to figure out how what he meant was the opposite of how you sort of come over the top and onto to the pedal stroke when you climb, but can't quite understand what he means by the phrase ....
You can't do any of this in the moment without practice. Remembering five tips when you're half mad from lactate burn in the last 100m of a race just won't work. Has to be second nature. So go to an outdoor velodrome or closed road and do some "form sprints", i.e. not full gas but practicing these body position and awareness tips. (For extra fun do this with your mates and practice lead-outs too)
The handlebar to the crank or pedal is a really long leverage arm. Alternating up on the bars back and forth against each pedal stroke is using this long lever arm to put more power through the crank arm and to the rear wheel. The best way to be a better sprinter is through sprinting! I always worked on two main aspects of sprinting: 1) Very high cadence work in relatively low gearing to improve spin efficiency and top end speed. 2) Repeated full-out sprints on a known section of road. The more you do it, the more you learn about your maximum effort and how long it lasts. Doing this as a team really gives everyone an idea of how they stack up. Nothing replaces in-race conditions, so doing this with a large group will better prepare you for the real thing. Made this a regular once-a-week routine. It was so nice to do this as a team, as it allows you to work on navigating the peloton, avoiding pitfalls and knowing when and how to go. Once we all did it for a season, we developed excellent pack awareness, got rid of bad habits, which improved our prowess and success in bunch sprints. Adding a weight-lifting regimen isn't a bad idea either! Having lots of fast-twitch muscle fibers doesn't hurt either!
Thanks for this. For me, as an amateur, I often shift in sprints because, frankly, my sprints start at relatively low speeds and I'll quickly run out of gear if I don't shift up. However the other bits are spot on. Bike throws next time?
+SprinterDellaCasa If your sprints start at a relatively slow speed you might consider doing this training: almost comming to a full stop, putting it in the biggest gear, go to max speed as quickly as possible.
The lower you go, the stronger your arms must be, which is probably why Dan didn't go so low; his arms wouldn't let him. Still, this video's a great lesson
Mark has obviously put in a lot of time and effort to get the sprints right. That Cervelho looks awesome and he makes the sprint technique look very efficient
Absolutely ridiculous the amount of speed and power pro's put down but I'm speechless as to how fast they accelerate to that speed and power output. Incredible.
This is worth about a yrs worth of efforts of GCN advice videos! #fkgfantastic - let's see if Euan can do ½ of what King Cav has done... HTH did Lloyd make all the yrs of pro if he identified 'areas' to address ??
+D.K. Gonzalez 5. Demand a massive leadout from your entire team. 6. Don't forget to yell at your teammates. 7. Shoulder opponents until you cause a crash and then act surprised when it happens. 8. Then blame your team when you don't win. 9. Continue acting like a diva until no team wants you and you have to go find your own sponsors. 10. Rinse and repeat...oh wait....no teams want this guy. Cav is a short, fat little diva that has everyone snowed. He's not worth the cost of his cleats......
I am not sure why this took so long for me to put together but I just tried pulling up on the bar opposing the leg drive down and it feels drastically better than trying push the bar down opposing the opposite leg. not sure if anyone will get what I am saying but if your hands ever cramped after a sprint try pulling instead of pressing.
Big Fan here from Philippines !! Hoping you will be able to read my comment , Im really a big fan when it comes to biking since I was a kid , been using the old bike bought by my father wayback 1997 until now, I just want to thank you for the videos you uploaded, it helps us a lot, really do. God bless and thank you for inspiring us always!
It's always felt natural to me to rock the bike into my pedal stroke. For some people the opposite is the case for one reason or another. If you are bringing someone into cycling I recommend teaching this skill very early on because it can take a while for some to adapt to this. It will also help build confidence and a little bit of handling skills because you get a pretty good feel for your bike when you start to thrash it back and forth while hitting high speeds. You know?
Changing gears while sprinting can also ends badly. My friend did it while we were sprinting on a empty road and his chain get stuck in a derailleur so he push him self over bars...
Well done Mark Cavendish on the 34 stage wins. Phenomenal achievement this year, you've redefined what is possible for sprinters and for Tour de France competitors. Absolute legend, greatest sprinter of all time.
Dan trying to sprint with Cav looks like a newborn giraffe trying to outrun a cheetah.
+Seth Crozier Comment of the week right there :D
Hahahaha🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
@4:42 the giraffes neck was flinging around.
Good thing dan counted down till he started his sprint or I wouldn't have been sure when it started
i died
Dim Sim o
And Matt was like - "um excuse me sir, do you have a moment to hear about our lord and saviour- Le Bike De Pro ?
You know when Dan’s really pushing hard because he stops telling the story of when he rode for the Cervelo test team.
HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Naturalhighz Now Cav did it...
Watched this from the future (Tour de France 2021). 5 years after and this is still relevant! Mark Cavendish rewriting history books at TDF🔥
Indeed!
tour de oman was epic
Had the pleasure of watching mark train on the velodrome in Manchester a few months back this vid doesn't do the sheer amount of acceleration he has justice. His coach shouted go before the go sound had finished he'd exploded and was half way round the track. It's insane.
do "how to climb as a sprinter" and "how to sprint as a climber"
This has been the most useful video for me you've ever done GCN!
Yew!
One of the best videos yet. I've never seen Cav do an on-bike tutorial like that. The camera angles were perfect, too.
Easily my best “how to” so far from GCN. Like Dan, I'm a skinny climber; but I live in a relatively flat area where many races are decided by sprints. How to sprint like Cavendish:
You don't.
You don't sprint like Cavendish.
Very true, no one on earth sprints like Cav
Kusakabe Mirai - cause he is that damn good
Reply if youp're still alive
He a savage at the end
Well, compared to Dan he is.
+Global Cycling Network
Mark Cavendish is a beast😂 Dan is also good but Cav is the best sprinter of all time👏
Was Dan even trying? :-)
+John Rider
haha😂i think when your enemie is Mark Cavendish you it isn't worth a try😉😂
"...bring the bike to your feet, not the feet to the bike..." That is a great tip.
I still dont have an idea how to do it
@@ryzenjmeg Try loosening your grip on the bars a bit. Then kinda let the bike do the left right action as you sprint but just to get the feel for it as it wobbles quite a lot. Maybe try it at low power first and be careful
@@thebeast88_ I have watched most of the video here in youtube teaching this but I still cant manage to do it. Bit I'll try your advice

I have tried on several times. I don't know if I am doing it right.
He got lucky, you'll beat him next time.
There's a Cervelo in this video. And Dan Lloyd. But I'm not gonna make that joke. That would be a bit Testy. Bad for Team morale.
That's a good point, but on another unrelated note i think maybe JUST MAYBE Dan Lloyd once raced for the Cervelo Test Team
+Danial Arif You ruined it
+yoda112358 What joke would that be?
+Nigel Johnson The joke, you missed it. But it's nice to see Dan in stiff competition.
+Niklas Ström No you missed my joke, I was in fact being sarcastic, I am totally aware of Dans obsession with the Cervelo test team.
thank you mark cavendesh its always best to hear it from the pros
one of the better interviews with real tips not always thought about! Thanks a lot.
DRINK GAME:
Everytime Cavendish says "You know" - TAKE A SHOT!!
You wouldn't make it through the vid !!
+Ricardo Neto 3 minutes into the video bottle was empty
Then go sprint intervals!
No thanks I like living
Watched this video mid week and got my first bunch sprint win the next race. Thanks GCN and Mark Cavendish #wattagebomb

I love it, Cav comes very sympathic, but he isn't always in the competition. Very nice video, for me one of your best one's! I laaaike!
Always my favourite sprinter
Comig back at this video after seeing his great wins in Tdf :) Congrats Cav
That bit at the end was brilliant.
holy smokes he takes off like a rocket!!

Solid tips right there especially the pedalling technique one!
Mark Cavendish is a velociraptor!
Thanks a lot for this video!
Great video, thanks to Mark and GCN for this!
Cav is da bomb !!! Love GCN
The lower you go, the stronger your arms must be, which is probably why Dan didn't go so low; his arms wouldn't let him. Still, this video's a great lesson
At the end I saw Dan sprinting and said "Keep low!" Then up comes Mark and takes the words out of my mouth!
That ending is golden, it just shows how fast this guy is.
wow, so much helpful info from Mark, what a great athlete!
Cav is the man.
I HAD to watch this again after the Tour Cav had, he has to be the all time greatest sprinter...
Number 6: If you can not win the sprint strikes the nearest competitor.
lol
This comment aged so well since the Tour of Poland 2020...
lol one of the better videos you done on gcn wtg dan
Cav touched on the wind a little bit. With a tailwind, you can start earlier. With a headwind, you have to wait or risk blowing up.
Awesome vid, this and the Contador vid are tops!!
5 tips on how to sprint like Mark Cavendish.
1. No way 2. You're joking 3. Get real 4. Just go home 5. Bribe Chris Hoy.
Hoy would of course absolutely mince Cav in a sprint.....but not after a 200km stage first.
Mark has obviously put in a lot of time and effort to get the sprints right. That Cervelho looks awesome and he makes the sprint technique look
very efficient
I feel faster already! Good effort Dan da man.
More Cav videos please!
keep low... had the same in mind, when Cav said it :-)
So we see, the tips do not help without practice
great video, super tips. Nice work!
very good advice

I will apply all of these tips to my sprint. And I will still be completely innefective at sprinting.
You know Dan, i think you know, you know, you keep low you know
What I learned: Sprint Like Cav:
1. Pull along side opponent
2. Stop pedaling
3. Berate opponent
4. Continue past.
Got it!
+D.K. Gonzalez
5. Demand a massive leadout from your entire team.
6. Don't forget to yell at your teammates.

9. Continue acting like a diva until no team wants you and you have to go find your own sponsors.
10. Rinse and repeat...oh wait....no teams want this guy.

+Matthew Walter lol, well put Stiggy.
+Matthew Walter so Cav is the Stig!
Well one year later I wonder what are you gonna say about your last statements.
It's all about the bike! Cervélo!

Cav legend; Dan Leg end!!!!
wow i like the new subscribe thing at the end pretty professional
Thanks GCN! Mark is such a great guy. Selfless and always contributes to the sport.
Spectacular sprinter.
every day in brake work i wach Mark Cavedish documentary :))))..now i add this :)))Is my hero on bike
Omg, that bit at the end where cav freewheeled past dan at full sprint...... priceless. pmsl
Good effort Dan, you should blame that sprint thrashing from cav at the end on your bike, should've had your aero frame and deep rims!!
+Horatio Holloway I would blame Dan's calves....want to sprint like Cav? build your calves
What a legend🎉
you can click on the screen links now awesome and yeah im gonna use these tips thanks guys
So choosing the right gear before the sprint is important?
Good sport, Mark.
I found this is one of the most useful cycling tutorial. Can we have one for “how to climb like Pogacar”please? 😆
Excelent this reminds me how much i like sprinting
Btw very useful and interesting video
the cav monster 👍👏
Mark cool guy legend

I heard Cervelo used to provide bikes for the Dan Lloyd Test Team.
Cavendish seems like a great guy!
This was a true delight! Thank you kindly, Mr. Cavendish, for sharing your skill. Thank you, Mr. Lloyd, for getting such absolutely great footage. :D
Cav's riding a Cervelo here. Did you guys know Dan used to ride for the Cervelo Test Team? He might have mentioned it before.
I saw someone in a gcn jersey cycling in Bristol today
You know. 5 years later I’m watching this because of Tdf 2021
best tips ever
It was very kind of the Boss to let Cav win.
How come this video comes with closed captioning? (I like it though, it helped a lot for me as someone with bad hearing, so keep it up!)
keep up the good work guys. love your vids ;)

What if I'm on fixed gear I can't choose the right gear
I cried laughing when Dan was sprinting flat out and mark came up side effortlessly coasting XD
Dan, I think you would sprint faster on that Cervélo-bike. You should give it a try sometime.
The ending had me in stitches. Poor Dan hahaha!
sorry for my bad cyclism skills, what "53/11" gear mean?
53T chainring and 11T cog in the cassette
2nd place in the sprint. Not bad, Dan. Well done.
Was this filmed before Cav put on Q rings, or has he switched back?
Amazing video. Thanks, Cav, for sharing sone really valuable tips.
Haha! Quality, love Cav toying with ya! Mind you your quads look about the same as marks arms 😜
Can you do a "How to Time Trail like .... Top 10 Time Trail Tips" From one of pros of Time TrailPlease
does somebody knows the name of the shoes Mark is using?
