I compete in PRS, try out and use a lot of different optics, talk to a lot of other shooters. The best Scopes in the $1k range are the Element Titan, US Optics TS-25X, Athlon Ares. Look at them first!

I have the tango 4 6x-24x scope. I was skeptical at first and even had a scope malfunction around 100 rounds in. Something slipped inside the scope and half of my lens had a shadow. I contacted SIG and talked to a real life person after only maybe a 5 minute wait time and explained what was going on. He emailed me a UPS packing slip and I shipped it off. The day it was received (within a couple hours of delivery) a brand new scope was shipped to me from a completely different location with no questions asked. The whole process took 6 days. I have never dealt with such a great warranty program before. The new scope has quite a few hundred rounds through it and it’s just killing it. There is also a lifetime warranty on these scopes that is completely transferable which is amazing.

#1. Always do the sheet. It make it much easier for those of us playing along. #2. When looking at the limitations of the scope such are MOA adjustment, look at the worst common cartridge. It is not an issue for the 6.5C, but will be for 308. There are also crazy people like me who put them on 22LR and see how far we can go.
This is a great video! Thank you for this approach to evaluating this price point and class of scope. The way you went about identifying the similarities, advantages, disadvantages, and quirks was well organized, organic, and very watchable. I don't know how anybody else here on the thread will have reacted (I haven't read other comments yet), but this was great length wise and I really enjoyed the whole video.
thanks for the review. I picked up the Sig Tango 4 6-24X50 like you reviewed but in black from a local gun shop that was closing for half price. It's more scope than I needed for a 6.5 Grendel rifle I built for my father as a surprise but couldn't pass up the price. Especially since I got carried away with everything else & ended up with close to $5k with the optic and everything else (over 2.5 years of keeping it secret). I've only had enough time to zero the rifle but so far it's a 1/4 moa rifle. It's good to hear the turrets track like they should. I keep telling myself that I could have bought us matching RPR's but I justify it by thinking that it means more that I built it instead of just buying it.
@@Archenhaust All scopes have that its just some its much more pronounced. Somescopes have a tiny spot where you can hold your eye to lose it. Better ones have a much more forgiving range of eye relief.
It looks like he reviewed the Sig Sauer Tango4 Gen I. The Gen II turret changed. Not sure why. Could be that it was too busy ( which I totally disagree BTW). For a guy commenting on PRS competition and time is money; that busy turret can actually save you from returning back to zero. ( with some simple math), so maybe he’s right just a little to challenging for him. He’s a KISS type of guy. I can appreciate that. It could be the way the zero stop snaps down in the lock position. Who’s guess as I can’t get any information. Apparently there are some who say the gen II turret is less busy but not better then the Gen I. I’m trying to get my hands on a Gen II soon (at a good price) so I can do a deep dive on them. I say soon so as to perhaps help someone find a great deal on a Gen I or stop them from buying junk either way. Also not necessarily for this area of commentary but I didn’t realize the Nikon had a zero stop. Must only be in the illumination model as my FX1000 doesn’t have a zero stop. Just a return to zero after zeroing the scope. Am I missing something or just not hearing right? Otherwise good review but maybe a little bias as sig, and vortex and others are basically built by the same Co. as I understand it. Likely all but the Burris have the same glass out of Indonesia’s regions.
I can’t say enough about how much I love vortex products. They have not let me down in and situations I’ve put them through. One company that you should do a review on is Sightron. The glass is far superior then and PST line scopes I’ve used.
The only Vortex worth considering is the Razor line. There is a reason people buy two, so you still have an optic to use when you mail the other one in for repairs.
@@stevejohnson5634 my experience with vortex has been great. I’ve had a diamondback 3.5-10 for about 6 years now. I’ve literally bounced it off of rocks and trees hunting in Alaska and it still holds true and can hit steel out to 600 yards. Definitely a tough scope for the price.
I got my Nikon FX1000 for $50. A known major big-box-store screwed up inventorying and had it labeled as another product. I mentioned the low price and the cashier insisted it was the correct price and said they’ll take the bunt of it. Can’t beat that price.
Thank You. This is a terrific review that required one tenth the time some other UA-cam gun enthusiasts (one especially comes to mind) would have used. Really nice segment You made here.
Awesome reviews and very informative. I have an Vortex Scope on my Ruger and It's the best scope i have ever bought for the money. Thanks for the knowledge and information Sir.
That you did tall target tests for these scopes shows the seriousness of the review. Thanks. I'd rate the Bushnell ELITE LRTS 4.5 - 18 x 44 with G3 illuminated reticle ($980. street price) DEFINITELY above the Burris and the now out-of-production Nikon. The LRTS has FFP, mil/mil, side focus and G3 illuminated reticle. In fact my G3 "Xmas tree" reticle is ENTIRELY ILLUMINATED, unlike the Vortex Xmas tree reticle. I'll never again shoot long distance without a Xmas tree reticle. I don't like dialing, especially for hunting. W/O a Xmas tree reticle you often need "Kentucky windage" IF you don't have time to dial.
Thanks for another great video Joel. I was interested in hearing how the nikon and burris stacked up to NF and Vortex. BTW, It was a pleasure meeting you at the BWRS final. I greatly enjoy viewing your review and tips videos.
Just bought a 3-15x56mm Leupold VX-5HD with the illuminated Firedot reticle for about $1,000 US. The glass is the same as that of their higher priced VX-6HD line, and probably the same as their $2K - $4K sniper scopes. Anyhow, its at least as good as my Zeiss 10x42 binoculars, night or day: I can vouch for that. However, you don't really need an illuminated reticle for almost any situation, tactical or hunting, but it is nice to have. It's also a 2nd focal plane scope, which uses Leupold's proprietary "custom dial system." While that makes it as good as FFP scopes, you have to stick with a predetermined load and altitude.
I own a number of scopes and this is a solid review. I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Nightforce NSX and it's a great scope; however, if I had to do it over again, I'd buy another Vortex PST Gen II and save the money.
@@josephd1046 could have some slightly better clarity but i can’t complain for the price i got it for, compared it to the sig tango 4 i have and the eye shadow is far more forgiving on the nikon. overall good beginner scope for target ffp scopes. i’d recommend it the lack of warranty doesn’t scare you since they don’t makes scopes now
I watched this video probably 20 times before I settled on my Nikon black fx1000. I've never owned a decent scope before but I will say if you are new to the $500 and up range it'll blow anything you've ever used out of the water.
I have a Swarovski Z3 3-10 x 42, and it is a great scope. I personally put the clarity of the glass on my Z3 to be above that of the Leupold on my father's rifle. The reticle is pretty simple, and there are no tactical turrets or illuminated reticle, but I have yet to look through an optic that beats my Swarovski's clarity. An expensive piece of kit, but well worth it.
Thanks as a grunt Marine back in the day, had a lot of trigger time but not much with a scope. Looking to get back into long range rifle shooting and after a 20 30 year lay off there's a lot of really neat stuff out there now. But it is a lot to absorb. Very good video Thanks again
thanks for the reviews and comparisons! it made it easy to solidify my pick, i went with the vortex viper pst gen 2 and its everything i wanted and expected!
30 mm scope tube is a must for any rifle I would justify putting these on at that price point. I have the Nikon, Burris, and NF SHV. Oddly I love the Nikon but like showing off the NF
I have the burris xtr2 and haven’t noticed the greying issue, but then again i dont have other scopes to compare it to. Its been great in the limited time ive had it. Was considering the vortex at one point but went with the burris as it has a 34mm tube, more adjustment, and a longer eye relief. Mounted it on my .300wm
Same here with mine I guess they fixed it or put better glass or something because my buddy who is kind of OCD says that although it's not as clear it compares to his vortex razor gen2. He tells me that he had to go back and forth looking through both. Our gunsmith agrees with him.
The early XTRII scopes had terrible glass and Burris stepped up their game and used better glass after all the complaints. You can send in the scope with the terrible glass a d they will exchange it for the updated model with nicer glass.
Love that Nightforce reticle, Im thinking Nikon black though. I hate the thought of spending another 1,000$ on glass again and its giving you some great value
I've seen Nikon blacks on sale for 600.00 bucks at midway USA and optics planet. I thought long and hard about getting one but went with the Vortex viper post gen 2 for 849.00 at optics planet
I own a Burris XTR II 3-15 MOA and a Nikon Black FX1000 4-16 MOA and I generally agree with your assessments. Only thing I'd add is that the turrets are bit mushy on my Nikon but it adjusts and tracks perfectly as far as I can tell IF YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to the clicks. Got mine on clearance from a vendor on Amazon for $450.00!! I mounted the Burris on my primary Coyote rifle that I hump the sandhills and mtns with because it seems more "durable" to me than the Nikon which sits atop a Prairie Dog rifle that I mostly shoot from a bench whether at range or on a ridge line over a PD Town. Both are 22-250s. I'd rather have the Burris if there's only a couple hundred dollars difference in price but when there's $350-400 difference, Nikon (depending on application, of course). I also agree with your scope power assessment. Anything over about 16 power is only good, really, for spotting hits, reading mirage/wind, etc. and that's what a spotter is for in LR precision shooting. The higher the power, the harder it is to maintain the crosshair steadily on target for either shooting or ranging. fwiw
Burris 5 x 25 x 50 XTR 2, for Me, as my 2023 built, Bought in early 2024 Scope, HAS Japanese Glass, Highly Polished, in the Phillipines and, IS,. Very CLEAR ! Built Tough and "Tracks",.. Perfectly,. Love this, Newly Re-Vamped, Scope ! Paid $599 at, Scheel's,. Sweet deal for, the price, IMO !
I Own the Burris XTRII 4-16 along with Kahles, Steiner and Bushnel ERS, and while the glass is not ass good, its definitely not gray at all. In fact, its actually excellent for the $750 I paid for it.
I just bought a Vortex 5-25x56 mRAD 14mm tube 1.5 Zeiss rings for my POF-308 20" barrel and I am happy with my purchase. On the flip caps, you need to remember to buy slightly less in size of the reticle... hence, 56mm would be the 50mm flip cap and the 44mm rear would be the 40mm flip cap. Many people complain that the caps are loose because they buy the same size. There is a size chart online that you can go by to figure it out.
Great review. So well done! I would be interested to know why the Leupold is not in this discussion. All my research suggests that the conversation always comes back to the top three in most opinions: Leupold, Nightforce, Vortex (alpha order).
That was a very good fast review. Something to add tho... Total of 17 mils of elevation ends up being closer to 13 mils when mounted on a 20 moa rail. Good enough for most types of shooting, just not extended range shooting.
I wished Athlon had designed their Argos BTR's with more Eye Relief ( 3.5 inches or more). 3.3 inches of Eye Relief is just too short for me and my setups. It's one of the main reasons I stay away from the Sig Sauer (Tango 4) 6-24x50 scopes as well.
Sub point. I think some scones come darker lensed for more Hunter, soldier and sniper types. I always worry about glare and glints so I have lens dim film on mine for when I’m in motion.
I also picked one up for my OTC Colorado elk/deer hunt this year. It was a fantastic scope! I really think it’s the best $1000 scope currently on the market!
In my opinion the knock-on black glass is so much cleaner then the vortex, but that's my opinion. And to find out about durability put them on a 30 caliber AR. It's not the recoil of an AR that will take a scope out is that heavy bolt slamming forward that will really test whether the scope biltwell or not.
I wouldn't put any Nikon scope on a magnum rifle especially since they no longer honor their own lifetime warranty. I'd just use it on a 22LR or just sell it to the next sucka.
Im with some of the other comments on wanting a good say 300-500, 400-600, something in that range scope comparison, both because thats my current price range, but I also think I'd be fairly interesting as well for those of us that might not have access to a (reasonable) range with more than a few hundred yards. But with that aside, I still enjoy watching all of Joel's content because I want to be able to play at proper long range shooting rather than trying to pull the most I can from a rifle at 1-3 hundred yards. Might not be in Joel's interest though to have an optic comparison for the AR15 platform and it's cartridges (Standard .223/5.56, 6.5 Grendel, and his thoughts on .224 Valkyrie) but someone with his level of explanation towards it would be lovely.
The Leupold Mark AR, Nikon Black X1000, and Vortex Diamondback Tactical, with my admittedly lacking knowledge base, seem like a reasonably fair match up for optics that have a 3-4 starting magnification, while the much loved Vortex Strike Eagles, the 1.5x Leupold Mark AR, and a Primary Arms ACSS Raptor seem reasonable for a 'short dot' optic comparison, all starting at none or slight magnification and only going up to a few times. The second would likely also be of interest to the 2- and 3-gun crowds.
Thatguy - i can wholeheartedly recommend Primary Arms optics. ive owned the $379(when i got mine.$389 now) PA 1st gen SFP 1-8x ACSS scope for 2.5 yrs and 6,500 rds with zero issues. its got very good glass, solid turrets, good illumination and the best BDC/ranging reticle in the ACSS in the industry. and after busting 4 scope caps and 3 mag adjust levers off of it, its held zero and never let me down. ive owned the $269 FFP PA 4-14x ACSS R-grid(no longer available but new reticles are excellent including a new R-grid-2 ) for 2 yrs and 5,500 rds with zero issues. its got very good glass with side focus , accurate but spongey turrets, decent illumination and an awesome reticle. ive had the $1299 PA platinum FFP 1-8x ACSS for 8 mos and 1500 rds with zero problems. it has phenomenal glass, good accurate turrets, superb illumination and again, the best reticle in the industry. the new $499 PA 3-18x comes with 9 different reticles and is suposed to be a step up in quality from the 4-14x all around. all reports say it is. i plan to buy it soon. i highly recommend PA optics for anyone that wants 3 to 5 times the quality and performance for 1/3 rd the cost.
Patrick Flatley The military uses the best optics money can buy. Especially on marksman rifles. So if you tell me you were a sharpshooter using a Bushnell 3x9, the only 6 people your killed were on your own COD team.
Patrick Flatley The only think i can find on a Patrick Flatley is an NHL player. Nothing in the military members database. I still think your a troll who hasnt done shit but steal valour over the internet to feed your insecurities. You sound like you’ve done a few tour in Modern Warfare.
I just bought a FX1000 M-RAD non illuminated for $800cad with tax. thats like $500 down there. It'll go on my M14s that until now has had a $40 airgun scope on it. thx for the video.
I picked up a Nikon Black X1000 4x16 MOA reticle when it was on sale - $200 off a while back. Still got a lot to learn about precision rifle, but is more than adequate for the M4 5.56 I’ve got it mounted on. Good out to at least 500M
Wish you would have included zeiss in this.also wish they made pst in non-illumination to save weight. Thank you for the low down. Buying a scope Christmas.
Hi Joel I just got a Nikon Fx1000, 4-24. I am having bad problems with the reticle “bleeding” when the illumination is on. I don’t have great eyes, but with glasses I am good to go. But regardless the bleed is there at level 11, 10 and a small amount at 9. Did yours do this? Thanks a lot for any feedback. Cheers
You had better try and get that Nikon scope sent in for warranty if they still honor it if you have your sakes receipt. Soon it's all over and no more Nikon warranty.
Would you recommend getting the Sig Sauer 2.5- 8X32mm or the Sig sauer 4.5-14x44mm or my other option is the vortex tactical 16X44 don’t know to much about scopes but building a long range muzzle loader!
Personally , the Meopta optika6 beats all five of these. I say this because I have had all of these except the Burris , and I trust your opinion that the Vortex and the Nightforce is better. Thanks for a great review !!!!
That would not be too fair of a comparison. Meopta optics are the next level up. A more appropriate comparison would be the scope from Zeiss, Leica or Swarovski.
@@F15ElectricEagle The Meopta Optika6 is priced well under $1000 so it's an appropriate comparison among the lines of these scopes. Examples 5-30x56 FFP MRAD1 $850 and $650 for 3-18x56 FFP MRAD1.
New subscriber and man I’m glad I found the channel. Great presentation and impeccable information. I am in the market for a new optic so this was perfect. I will continue watching.
I'm using the Vortex Viper HST 4-24 x 50mm on both of my bolt rifles. I was considering the PST Gen II on my new AR build ..but they only offer a 5 -25 x 50 which is 16" long and without Vortex offering an intermediate 4-20X PST Gen II scope .. I went with the Burris XTR Gen II 4-20 x 50 ..with the 34mm tube.
I always like the simplicity of your reviews and I have been watching your 6mm ARC work for the past year. I am building a 16" 6mm ARC rifle and I am trying not to build a bench rest rifle. So, I'm looking for a 600 yard and in ffp scope with a xmas tree rec and resettable zero stop & under 25 oz. I have plenty of chunky boyz set-ups. PLEASE SOME ADVISE OR NOT.....BUZZ
I would take the Athlon Midas Tac front focal plane 6-24×50 scope over any of the Scopes any day of the week! Better tracking and a little better price than Nikon. Did I mention their lifetime warranty🇺🇸
The Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 is the best quality Chinese made scope that money can buy in the sub $550 price point and nicer than all other Chinese made scopes from other brands selling for much more money. I paid around $450 for mine on sale. It's actually a nicer scope compared to the Philippine made Vortex Viper PST gen 2. The Midas Tac glass is also superior compared to the Arken EP5.
Great to see a thorough head-to-head scope comparison from someone who knows what they're talking about! Next time I'd like to see something from the SWFA line like the SS 3-15x42. Also there are so many brands that compete in this price range so it would be nice if you briefly cover why you don't include a Bushnell, Athlon, Sightron, Weaver, or Primary Arms.
Maybe because most of the scopes within this budget are Chinese made and he only wanted the good quality non Chinese scopes. The SWFA SS are on sale now $480/$490 3-15x42 and $180 for their fixed power SS models. All are made in Japan scopes. I've never ever seen them selling for this cheap before.
Great review, i have Nikon black for some time ... and im happy with it . Yes turrets are bit harder to operate but i think after almost 2 years im using it got better at some point . For the price ... well i cant complain:) thanks for a great video review.
While I do agree with your conclusion in the video, I'd like to see how you think the Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 stacks up in your opinion. The only thing it doesn't have is an illuminated reticle. But coming in at 629.99, it has HD glass and shoots easily out to 1000 yards.
The Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 would be a better fit for this video because it has all the features of the other scopes and is priced similarly to the Burris XTR II scope. With a good coupon code at Opticsplanet, the ETR can be had for under $1100.
The 6-24x50 Athlon Midas Tac I paid $450 on sale for is a fantastic Chinese made scope and I'm pretty much anti Communist China and don't want to contribute to their government and PLA army even if Athlon is an American brand the Chinese government still gets paid their fair share from their own domestic Chinese scope manufacturers. I'd say the Midas Tac is the nicest sub $600 Chinese made scope that money can buy followed by their $700 Ares BTR 4.5-27x50. Their more expensive Athlon Ares ETRs are the best Chinese made scopes that money can buy period but for that price ($900-$1000 when on sale) you're better off buying Japan made or European such as Meopta instead because the Ares ETR is still a Chinese made scope.
Cool vid. I’m still pretty set on getting a Leupold Vx3i LRP for my LaRue. Was very tempted with that Nightforce SHV but it being made in Japan was somewhat a let down. I’d love a “high end” Nightforce but right now that’s too much money. Leupold will most likely be getting my money as they’ve always been great scopes in my experience.
Excellent review. In my opinion, the night force will win this comparison if it had a little more magnification. Vortex has probably the best clarity and view but tracking tends to get spoiled in time and requires service. This is not a big issue since vortex offer a life free service but it worse mentioning for guys who can't afford to have more than one scope. What about the platinum primary arms. I guess it deserved to be in. Also Athlon would be a choice in my opinion.
You can't go wrong with a night force but notice you had to step down in magnification to get one that would fit in the same budget range as the others.
I have the Burris xtr and really enjoy it, I payed under $700 and love the reticle, the only thing I find is that when grouping @100 yds for handloads, the reticle is a little big
great feedback on these scopes. I am currently trying to pick a scope in that range and you helped me. The questions is, nightforce or vortex? oh boy. That question will get lovers and haters typing. Thanks for the vids.
100% true about the tango 4 and scope shadow! Little unhappy with mine 4 that ! But did get a killer deal 50% off and 10% off first time buyer from optics planet !
The 5 best scopes for $1,000 I would have to say that shooting a Nightforce scope has been one of the best experiences I have ever had I used about every scope that he had or examination and most generally I would say he was just about 100% on I hate to sound shaded or jaded towards the night Force but it is by far one of the very best Scopes I have ever mounted to a any chassis out there. My loyalty to the night Force is none.
I own two of those featured: Nikon Black FX1000 4-16 and Burris XTR II 3-15 with MOA reticles. Not being a competitor nor a Tier One Operator, I cannot justify more than a grand on a scope. No brag intended but I often out shoot guys at the range with rifles and scopes that cost 5 times mine. I have them mounted on Rem700s in 22-250. I did decide to put the Burris on my Light Varmint that I hump the sandhills and mountains with because it seems more durable than the Nikon which sits on my Heavy Varmint that I use primarily for target practice and the range and an occasional Prairie Dog Shoot. More with less, that's my motto. Adapt, Improvise and Overcome. I'm happy with both of them, all things considered. They're not SB PMIIs, U.S. Optics or IOA Valdadas but they'll get the job done. I stole my Nikon off Amazon on clearance for $450.00! So, REALLY pleased with it.
I’m new to long range shooting and this was extremely helpful. I’ll be watching this video more than once as I’m choosing my new optic. Thank you

Really good review. It was down to the point with no BS. Thanks!
I got my Nikon FX1000 for $50. A known major big-box-store screwed up inventorying and had it labeled as another product. I mentioned the low price and the cashier insisted it was the correct price and said they’ll take the bunt of it. Can’t beat that price.
Hope you bought more than one.
That Made in Japan Bushnell LRTS is am excellent scope especially for $700 on sale.
Thanks for another great video Joel. I was interested in hearing how the nikon and burris stacked up to NF and Vortex. BTW, It was a pleasure meeting you at the BWRS final. I greatly enjoy viewing your review and tips videos.
Thanks brother. Nice to meet you too.
Really great summary here. Thanks for helping me with the decision making process.
I own a number of scopes and this is a solid review. I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Nightforce NSX and it's a great scope; however, if I had to do it over again, I'd buy another Vortex PST Gen II and save the money.
I have owned several PST II all of them went back to vortex. I have several NF scopes and none have ever gone back to NF. NF=SET IT & FORGET IT!
I was so happy to see the Nikon black in here right after I bought it. Getting his seal on the scope is awesome
Been looking at the Nikon.. your thoughts?
@@josephd1046 could have some slightly better clarity but i can’t complain for the price i got it for, compared it to the sig tango 4 i have and the eye shadow is far more forgiving on the nikon. overall good beginner scope for target ffp scopes. i’d recommend it the lack of warranty doesn’t scare you since they don’t makes scopes now
No more warranty support from Nikon. Too bad, I used to like Nikon before they decided to screw over all of their loyal customers.
Even the local dealer selling Nikon scopes advised all of their customers to buy a Leupold instead due to their lack of any future support.
@@commonsense5709 yeah ik but i got it for $310 so i’d say so cares
I watched this video probably 20 times before I settled on my Nikon black fx1000. I've never owned a decent scope before but I will say if you are new to the $500 and up range it'll blow anything you've ever used out of the water.
A Swarovski z5 is a great option too. Excellent glass and simple BT. Weigh in at a pound too. Awesome hunting scope.
@@joslinnick No shit it beats your dads old leupold lol Swarovski has the best glass in the industry. period
I'll be watching this video at least 5 more times.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Very excellent review. Thank you for interjecting the negatives of some scope manufacturers! Great work!-Paul
I'm loving the channel, this video in particular was very informative for someone who is new to scopes in this price range!
I would have loved to see a primary arms optic in the review. They are up and coming in the optics world
yeah, but we're the poors..Joel doesn't deign to review scopes for the poors.
i bought a 3x for 7.62 x 39 and I am in love.
I like the Burris because it takes the glare off especially when you have the sun in the background
Thanks for doing a video comparing optics. I'd like more content on hear, like what's the best weapon light, etc.
Great comparison, one of the best I’ve seen.
Nate Spence thank you!
Thanks as a grunt Marine back in the day, had a lot of trigger time but not much with a scope. Looking to get back into long range rifle shooting and after a 20 30 year lay off there's a lot of really neat stuff out there now. But it is a lot to absorb. Very good video Thanks again
One, if not, the best comparisons I have seen. Way to go. A big thank you!
thanks for the reviews and comparisons! it made it easy to solidify my pick, i went with the vortex viper pst gen 2 and its everything i wanted and expected!
30 mm scope tube is a must for any rifle I would justify putting these on at that price point. I have the Nikon, Burris, and NF SHV. Oddly I love the Nikon but like showing off the NF
Good info! Nikon has been on my radar for a bit as well as the Nightforce!
NIGHTFORCE all the way
Nikon no longer honors their own lifetime warranty.
Has the Burris held zero under the recoil of a 300 win mag?! I want to make sure I buy a scope that can handle that harsh recoil
The early XTRII scopes had terrible glass and Burris stepped up their game and used better glass after all the complaints. You can send in the scope with the terrible glass a d they will exchange it for the updated model with nicer glass.
@@c.s.n.7695 held up great
Love that Nightforce reticle, Im thinking Nikon black though.
@@g24thinf I have the Gen 1 version and like it as well..The PST line is good for the money
Finally!!! Someone that breaks it down! I thank you so much for your time!
The higher the power, the harder it is to maintain the crosshair steadily on target for either shooting or ranging. fwiw
Burris it is! 5x25x50 I’m pushing over 1500 meters trying for the 1800 meter club on a 65 buguara
The lower magnification scopes are normally clearer and brighter than the higher magnification scopes.
Excellent , very informative video. I just bought my second Vortex PST-5256. Thank you for make my choice easy. Yes, I love both of these scopes.
great coverage. I have the Burris and agree with your conclusion.
The older ones has terrible glass. They now use nicer glass. I'd have Burris replace it under warranty.
Love Nikon on last few builds. Truly feel they are overlooked all the time
I just bought a Vortex 5-25x56 mRAD 14mm tube 1.5 Zeiss rings for my POF-308 20" barrel and I am happy with my purchase.
Awesome review and information thank you for taking the time!
great info and well presented! as a noob wanna-be AR builder, this video provide lots of necessary info to consider for an optic. Thank you!
Great review. So well done! I would be interested to know why the Leupold is not in this discussion. All my research suggests that the conversation always comes back to the top three in most opinions: Leupold, Nightforce, Vortex (alpha order).
Leupold FFP scopes exceed the price threshold in this comparison.
That was a very good fast review. Something to add tho...
Total of 17 mils of elevation ends up being closer to 13 mils when mounted on a 20 moa rail. Good enough for most types of shooting, just not extended range shooting.
Beautiful !
If only I had the range.
Another great choice in that range is the Sightron SIII.
Athlon Argos BTR. 90% of a PST for 50% of the price. I say this as an owner of both.
ebr-2c reticle is my favorite.
@@OC_Lofton vortex reduced the eye relief from 4.0" inches on the PST gen1 to 3.4" on the pst gen2. what the hell were they thinking.
Sub point. I think some scones come darker lensed for more Hunter, soldier and sniper types. I always worry about glare and glints so I have lens dim film on mine for when I’m in motion.
Vortex PST Gen II 5-25×50 FFP is my favorite rifle scope.
Just picked up the Nikon FX1000 and love it.
I also picked one up for my OTC Colorado elk/deer hunt this year. It was a fantastic scope! I really think it’s the best $1000 scope currently on the market!
Got to agree with all the positive comments, great review, new to shooting and target shooting and the video was bang on. 5 stars!
I hadn't even got 20 seconds into the video and I was thinking, the Vortex Viper PST better be on this list haha. Nice work.
The hst is the same reticle. Just doesn’t have any numbers on it on the reticle. Also, it’s about $100 cheaper than the pst
Give me a top 3 list of the optics for AR's you would like to see in a review. I'll see what I can do.
SWFA all the way
Thatguy - i can wholeheartedly recommend Primary Arms optics.
ive owned the $379(when i got mine.$389 now) PA 1st gen SFP 1-8x ACSS scope for 2.5 yrs and 6,500 rds with zero issues.
its got very good glass, solid turrets, good illumination and the best BDC/ranging reticle in the ACSS in the industry. and after busting 4 scope caps and 3 mag adjust levers off of it, its held zero and never let me down.
ive owned the $269 FFP PA 4-14x ACSS R-grid(no longer available but new reticles are excellent including a new R-grid-2 ) for 2 yrs and 5,500 rds with zero issues.
its got very good glass with side focus , accurate but spongey turrets, decent illumination and an awesome reticle.
ive had the $1299 PA platinum FFP 1-8x ACSS for 8 mos and 1500 rds with zero problems.
it has phenomenal glass, good accurate turrets, superb illumination and again, the best reticle in the industry.
the new $499 PA 3-18x comes with 9 different reticles and is suposed to be a step up in quality from the 4-14x all around.
all reports say it is. i plan to buy it soon.
i highly recommend PA optics for anyone that wants 3 to 5 times the quality and performance for 1/3 rd the cost.
Picking up my RPR in .338. Will be going with the Vortex for glass.
Just did the same thing. Also have one on my RPR 6.5. Now it's time to break the .338 in...
The parallax knob on my FX1000 is not as stiff as yours.
They all passed the box test with flying colors. Except the Burris, which passed with flying shades of gray...
Sounds like he just likes the look of chromatic aberrations.
Love the pic at the end showing the group way below the dot while he says that. Makes me think he cant give an honest review
Are the burris not any good ? I found a eliminator 3 for for 500 bucks used but just curious if its worth it.

Are you the type of guy to put a $500 optic on a $2,000 rifle. IMO you should spend the same amount on an optic as the rifle itself.
Great video. Brought to my attention some scopes i would never think to look at. I think I'll still stick with vortex though.
Nice video comparison....just starting to try and figure out the optics game. Thanks for the post
Leupold is another excellent alternative compared to Zeiss.
I wish you had this one on your list Primary Arms GLx4 6-24x50FFP. I would like to see how it compares.
It wouldn't fare well in this group of scopes.
Great video, informative without beleaguering the point.
You just sold a Vortex. Will be going on a first class 6.5 Creedmore AR10 build
I have a PST on my ar10 6.5 and I love it!
Picked up the Burris XTR II 5-25x50 open box for $725.00 Not upset at all!
This was a very helpful video. I am trying to figure out what scope to put on my mid range 6.5 as we speak.
You can't beat SWFA SS scopes.
Watch some TiborasaurusRex videos about them.
He clearly included a Burris in this video...
My bad. I meant Bushnell. Fixed.
I really liked Nikon scopes up until they stopped honoring their lifetime warranty.
Absolutely fantastic video. Very well spoken and informative. Great reviews and clear pros and cons! Keep up the good work guys!
credman83 thanks!
I know what you mean about the Burris. My Veracity has the same issue with the grayish coloring. Otherwise, it is a good piece of glass.
Contact Burris for warranty. They improved the glass after so many complaints.
Very nice video! I’ve been researching for a long time. I have four scopes in the running, you hit two of them as your top two.
Don't knock Japan made scopes. They're better quality compared to scopes made in China and the Philippines. I do like my Leupold scopes too.
How did I know it was gonna be Joel doing this video? A video about gun accessories worth as much as my car? He's the man.
I have the Vortex in the 3-15 × 44 model and it is as awesome as mentioned. The glass is like looking thru a window.
For an all round scope for hunting and also longer distance target shooting (800-1000 yards), what magnification range would you recommend?
You can't go wrong with a night force but notice you had to step down in magnification to get one that would fit in the same budget range as the others.
I have the Burris xtr and really enjoy it, I payed under $700 and love the reticle, the only thing I find is that when grouping @100 yds for handloads, the reticle is a little big
great feedback on these scopes. I am currently trying to pick a scope in that range and you helped me. The questions is, nightforce or vortex? oh boy. That question will get lovers and haters typing. Thanks for the vids.
Nightforce made in Japan vs Vortex made in the Philippines I think it's a real no brainer.
That was good stuff exactly what I’ve been looking for.... subscribed .. thank you
Leroy Jones thanks for subscribing!
