Robert Wright: The logic of non-zero-sum progress

- www.ted.com Author Robert Wright explains "non-zero-sumness," a game-theory term describing how players with linked fortunes tend to cooperate for mutual benefit. This dynamic has guided our biological and cultural evolution, he says -- but our unwillingness to understand one another, as in the clash between the Muslim world and the West, will lead to all of us losing the "game." Once we recognize that life is a non-zero-sum game, in which we all must cooperate to succeed, it will force us to see that moral progress -- a move toward empathy -- is our only hope.
Robert Wright is incredibly wise and insightful.
After so many years of reading his audiobooks and listening to podcasts, it's nice to put a face to the name
"Intelligent pursuit of self-interest".
Great line!
All the alliances and treaties divide people into "Us" and "Them".
This Ted Talk is so underrated, may be due to the complexity of the subject. I am a Muslim living in Pakistan. Contrary to the popular belief in west, Pakistan is one of the most friendly countries for foreigners, have rich & colorful culture, and very open minded people. It is very different from what media portrays.
If Pakistan is so open-minded, why are the laws there so close-minded?
Lol open minded where they found Osama. Open minded where they just killed all the minorities by forceful conversation. Sending and training terrorists all over the region. Such a pisslam
@@VideoMagician77 I'm only guessing that, like most countries, regular people have little say in government. See the Iran protests right now, or the US when it comes to many issues (health care, banks, spying on citizens, congressional salaries and investing rules)
@@VideoMagician77it’s called culture and you can’t say nothing to that because we are different.
This Ted Talk, Robert Wright's insights on intelligent selfishness improving morality inspired me, my business, and how I approach competitors and business partners. Great talk!
Maybe the most important Ted Talk I ever watched.
Sadly people seem to have a natural inclination to flatline in the brain when it comes to systems-thinking.
After a nightmarish 2022, shell-shocked investors have losses to recoup and plenty to ponder, as an inflation report and a raft of other data did little to change expectations that the Federal Reserve would likely continue hiking interest rates even if the economy slows down, Which means more red ink for a good chunk of the year 2023. How can I profit from the current volatile market, I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $250k bond/stock portfolio.
Focus on two key objectives. First, stay protected by learning when to sell stocks to cut losses and capture profits. Second, prepare to profit when the market turns around.
I'm sure the idea of a Investment Adviser might sound controversial to a few, but a new study by investo-pedia found out that demand for Asset-Managers sky-rocketed by over 41.8% since the last year and based on firsthand encounter I can say for certain their skillsets are topnotch. I've raised over $580k within 18months from an initially stagnant portfolio worth $150K which was devoid of dividend stocks.

Stick with a good company by either not selling when it’s going lower and/or buying more at that time.
Every single bit of progress our world has ever achieved has been the result of a non-zero sum relationship. It is cruicial that people understand that this hold true in virtually all cases, from economics to politics. The world, life, is not zero-sum.
2 decades ago, the same idea was conveyed by UG
" The cooperation there springs from the total selfishness of mutual survival. It's like the cell in your body which also can survive only when it cooperates with the cell next to it. Otherwise it has no chance of survival. That's the only way we can live together. But that has to percolate to the level of, if you want to use that word, your `consciousness'. Only then you will live in this world peacefully"
who is UG?
Two things: power is normal in natural in some respects. Dominance hierarchies are built into nature after-all, for their natural organizing and efficiency tendancies. Also, power doesn't have to be exploitive or imbalanced; arguably, his whole thesis would show that balanced power would be selected for. Secondly, new technologies make new frames possible - the answer does not lie completely with us, but with the opportunities we create with new technologies, perspectives, ideas, rules, etc.
game here after watching Arrival.

Yup. Bought his book too.
Wright actually brings this up in his book, Nonzero. Even if we're all in the same boat, it doesn't mean the boat won't sink.
That crowd was so clueless. Not a single laugh at his joke at 18:48, "If you ask me why I'm not in favor of bombing Japan, I'm only half-joking because they made my car." Very witty vis-a-vis his deep thesis.
... and he was well dressed.

"Moral evolution" Something that should be talked about in Government and big business across the world a LOT more.
I like the way he talks. and I like his idea.
Gotta be kidding me. I just realized this is the same guy that wrote a book I'm reading, Nonzero. 👍
Humorous and wise:
Reasons to be cheerful:
• Growing lethality of Hatred
• Death spiral of negativity
Major round of moral progress is absolutely key....business class morality
• He is after the root causes of their hatred of Americans : understanding them will force us to a higher moral basis
• All the salvation the world needs is the intelligent pursuit of self-interest in a disciplined and careful way
From zero sum to the win-win meme
@Farweasel
I think the issue involved is disparities in power and knowledge. Also, disparities in hopelessness, despair, comfort, etc...
When you have a poor, hungry, sick, and desperate person entering into a contract with a happy, fat, well-rested, complacent person, the later is almost certainly going to have more bargaining power and is going to end up with a better deal. They will use their position to do so.
Some people find this situation distasteful, or even immoral.
Underated. I hope to work with you in the future. God bless.
indeed there will be power conflicts, as people by nature do have different strengths, but what is neglected is as do they have weaknesses. one is not able to accomplish everything that it requires for overall or for that matter personal interests completely, since the needs and wants of a person will in the first place never cease to increase. therefore, there is indefinitely a need for others to provide aid both qualitatively and quatitatively for mutual benefit, and grow together as a group.
Thank you, Sushant Singh Rajput, for brining me here. Love you beyond any oblivion.

I get so frustrated when people say "that's so obvious" - yeah, well than why doesn't anyone seem to know it? The point of this kind of work is to make explicit, to make conscious, what we may know subconsciously to have this rule over our petty thoughts of the moment. Articulating the obvious has proven elusive for thousands of years, so contribute, don't dismiss.
"capitalism has been a constructive force..." has not aged well
There goes my favorite modern writer!!!
...organization is accomplished, but rigidity is avoided. In that sense, as the needs of the environment dictate, communication and the variation in roles can allow the structure to switch like a matrix to the new goals of the adaptive unit. If one person's strengths are played, they lead; if a new challenge arises, an all-encompassing meaningful framework to understand nature and ourselves within it will allow each person to communicate and understand what needs to happen toward a solution.
I'm inclined to agree with you
however, the question comes in, which is how exactly should a system be built to encompass the needs in complete balanced, so that all are to benefit in ways that they desire, should they contribute substantially not comparatively, but based on their own abilities (stregnths and weaknesses). next is the question of mindset, which as suggested is evolving, but untill all the weakest links have been eliminated,or improved, the chain will not hold, and to achieve that is near impossible, wif morality
Funny piece of human nature in there @ 17:30 , the irony of him speaking about hating anne Coulter and poking fun at the bush administration, while simultaneously saying humankind needs to get along better, stop hating, and better understand each other, just goes to show how difficult that really is. So much to overcome as a species that we truly might not make it another few thousand years.
Exactly. The more I digest the current state of our world, the more I realize that both sides of the political spectrum, in general, A) believe they're on the moral side of issues and B) don't know what they don't know.
Another way of saying this is we need to learn how to unify without getting played by forces that feign unification for their own parasitic purposes.
@@TheDoctornaut Very right! Thanks so much for your great comments. It's Very nice to hear some intelligent discourse and sound thoughts here; very reassuring. Have a great one!

And as the population grows, the range of diversity grows. Even though the mean stays the same, the outliers in both directions are further apart. Except you can't get less complex than a certain point, so it only extends in one direction: toward more complexity.
Yes, exactly!
However the claim as I understood it in the speech that was made, was that there is selection for more complexity which is not what the proof supports.
Morality is game theory applied, the interaction between zero-sum and non-zero-sum games within a system. Exploitation of non-renewable resources is a zero-sum game in the long run. The only "moral" change we need to make to our culture is to move towards renewable energy sources and things might have a chance to get back to normal. Looking at history, though, it's usually full out war and only after that do we get back to "business as usual".
too consequentialist. Try again John Stuart Mill
*Summary:* Empathy is Self-interest.
lol I love that guy.
He didn't say anything new to me, but he made my day with the humor and the character.
I think I see what you are referring to. In some sense, it is the evolving relationship between the internal dynamic and the internal's balance with the external. As the internal dynamic settles, the relationship evolves and the frame is no longer good, yeah? I have a certain outlook that what we are evolving is an increasingly FLEXIBLE adaptive system. That's how eukaryotic cells emerged, their flexibility. From the society to the family, the best structure will be one where....
And so it shall not be mistaken, there are more directions to a compass than is commonly apprehended.
He looks like a young Jordan Peterson. Lol
And yet RW is older than JP... :)
Yeah, I remember Gould made this point in some of his writings. But my thinking is, if complexity is a distribution that used to go from, say, 0 to 10, and now it goes from 0 to 10000, then isn't it still fair to say that complexity has increased? Not on average, certainly, but the upper limit is much higher than it used to be.
So essentially, the "most complex organism" marker tends to get higher and higher, even if complexity doesn't increase throughout the distribution.
depends completely on how you define "greatest" - but in some ways I quite agree. :-)
So well said.
The reason for why one see an increase in complexity is because the natural catastrophes that leads to mass extinctions annihilates the large organisms while bacteria just is to small to be affected. Giving an illusion that the mean complexity is being offset over time.
This is not the case. The mean complexity of the species in total stays at the same value. Only the population of organisms grows.
Zero sum and Nonzero sum are confusing. Gaining or loosing and Trading, respectively, would be clearer.
Trades can also be understood as win-win / gaining, which they usually are, in an exchange of goods or services.
+Frederik Precisely. My point exactly.
@@frederikroark but its not... non zero sum is just a different view on a zero sum game... in his tennis example, the game didnt change... his view changed... the game is still team A trying to beat team B... the two players in team A are not in a "co-op" game, where there is no one losing... its just the opponent team that will lose if they win... same with trading... when i sell you something im not winning... im giving away a resource which is finite... when i sell my labour im not winning... im giving away time of my life(the most unique of resources for each one of us) for an amount of money, dictated by conditions that are away from my hands(its not like i can go to my boss, and tell him the i value my time 1bn $ per hour, because there are people in bangladesh or w/e that value their time in 1$ per day, and thats something i cannot change!)... so if we are going to present our unique PoVs im down several billions of dollars, and i demand compensation! xD
Não seria "non-zero-sum game!?
I liked what I heard until I heard that should I have an enemy Ann Coulter was someone to which I should prefer. Should we have to count on anyone or group as pompous as this to further our civilization and/or Humanity we may want to reconsider. DHJL

I highly recommend it.

[Obama 08! & WE CAN'T WAIT!!]
Came here to understand non zero sum game after watching arrival movie.
done
How self-important and grandiose is TED?!
Now get your opponent to believe that. Not going to happen.
I think you mean playing tennis is a NON zero-sum game? The reason Wright says it was zero-sum is because he's talking about the outcome of the game.
But if you don't care about the outcome and just enjoy playing tennis regardless who wins then in that case playing tennis is a NON zero-sum game.
Life is a zero sum game, period.... Until we can travel the stars..... even then....
It's not, just don't have too many kids and don't make mistakes ever
I love how he acts like he's doing us a favor by telling us this
Human beings theoretically have an equal right to redress after power has been exerted, but they do not have equal power at their disposal. And as the west has exerted undue influence in the Middle East for 14 years - and I don't think that's a strongly arguable point by now, it isn't a difficult comprehension task when attempting to ascertain the motives of so-called "terrorists". And convolution of the word "hate" to the exclusion of any possibility concerning justice without vengeful motives so that resistance, military or otherwise is so labeled, and made invalid thereby is psychological warfare par excellence. As the resistance grows the enemy trembles, complaining about the emerging powers that are amassing against them, as they increase in valence and cohesion. Thus they seek to utilize the mysticism of complex multiplicity and false dichotomies to create diversions hoping these tactics will cause their foes to miss the real mark. But the name does not escape me. And I will be repaid.
is the youtube account recycling speeches?
Interesting. And a bit amusing that a secular person proposes to instruct the world about morals. He makes the exclusive truth statement which asserts the fundamental equality of all people with no indication of what property or properties of each individual that are actually equivalent to all other people. It cannot be their height, weight, any of their various aptitudes, certainly not their holdings in terms of wealth, nor their popularity, and definitely not their power to influence variables, either within their close circle of personal affiliations or the wider political schemata. He also states that non-zero sum strategy is based on value corollaries which are always judged according to self interest, which when left in its most primitive, shallow conceptualizations, can only lead to short term gains, and long term losses. The war within which we are presently engaged is a zero-sum game, winner take all. The Earth is as a pie, and every big slice that is carved from it, impoverishes everyone not invited to the party. There is only one who is fit to be the Lord of men, but I am no name dropper. My interest is his, as his was demonstrated with perfect valor. And absent valor you will fall into the bottomless pit while convinced your journey is to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And in this you shall be consumed. My valor fails me. Yet I will not stumble. For he alone is steady.

but you can't blame the people of the nation of america directly, only indirectly by saying that their ignorance to these disgusting actions of their government is an attributing causation. Too, american government and legislation makes it fairly difficult for american protests to do anything concerning global issues.

Talk about moral evolution in the west. The east was far more morally evolved. Actually, the west is only now starting to wake up morally and they are still very short-sighted in their actions. Meditate more, at least now you're on the right track

its why relationships fail today at damn near a geometric rate. no cooperation in relationships. damn girl, cooperate with me... bend over. its that simple!
This is a ridiculously self centered perspective. Your analysis of the game doesn't include all of the players and we very easily see this in the measured effects of global warming. Do the analysis with all the players and I think you come up with a different outcome. Good and bad are opposites that rely on each other. If the outcome is fully positive then it actually has no meaning.
God is good.

Whatever it's grounded in, this view is insanely naive.
The details about "overreacting" and "morally redeaming" "trying to understand why they hate you" and "root causes" "appreciate their humanity" and the rest are just as naive.
Robert, if you really want to understand why they hate you, immagine you're a little Jewish guy and they're ufter your blood because they claim you brink blood of their babies. Or for no reason at all, as in "hep hep" riots.
kurtlane: "Robert, if you really want to understand why they hate you, imagine you're a little Jewish guy and they're after your blood because they claim you drink blood of their babies...."
and because you're jewish, the US gives you the most advanced weapons and you have the best espionage agency in the world and all they can do is just "claim you drink blood of their babies..." whatever.
so robert is still (w)right.
