    I totally agree with you, trees are so important to our gardens. I have a small garden and have a weeping lilac, a white lilac and a standard lilac in my back yard. They all have amazing shows in spring and their foliage is wonderful all year long.

    I would also add to check the life expectancy of a tree. I just removed an Arizona Ash Tree from my backyard because it was half dead when we purchased the house.

    Wonderful. I would only add to always check the mature size of all "shrubs" because many of them will become trees. We made the mistake of planting a Mugho Pine that was sold as a shrub and 20 years later it was a big tree. Our neighbor had two small blue spruce planted to either side of her front door that got so large you couldn't see the door anymore!

    Great video Alexandra! I started a garden from scratch in the spring this year, and I planted about 5 different young trees. I hope they do well - I did a lot of research.... I think trees are precious because it takes decades for them to become trees!

    Excellent discussion about trees: ornamental value, practical considerations, and care. I’d also say that growing season affects the size of the tree one purchases. Here in South Carolina I bought a tiny Carolina Sapphire conifer 🌲eight inches high for $10 and it doubled in size and value in just a year. Also I recommend buying ornamental maples saplings and grow them in a container for the first year and then put them out in the landscape. 🌳

    I have planted nineteen trees over the last few years. Watering requirements can vary considerably in different locations: I recommend buying a soil moisture meter: these are inexpensive, and enormously useful. During the establishment period, which is longer for more mature specimens, it is important to water the periphery of the rootball more than the area closer to the trunk: this encourages the roots to spread: a tree that has been brought up in a nursery has a far smaller root spread than one that has grown naturally. Majestic Trees has supplied me with excellent specimens, all of which have thrived; they offer a first rate service. I have no connection with this company, except as a customer. It is important to know the water and soil requirements of trees, as these vary between different species.

    I am planning my own garden. I have very small area- around 50m2 and we want some trees, that are not higher than 2 m and perhaps some of them could be fruit trees. I want some bushes too, alongside the fence. Since I got such a small space to work with I need to plan the planting very thoroughly so to not waste room yet make it all work well together. I also have to fit small cosy bench/swingbench area in there for reading or just relaxing. The yard area has nothing in it at the moment and the lilac bush, that was growing there had to be cut down since it was there from previous owners and grown overly large and was threatening to fall over in the wind. I have basically clean yard to work with, with exception of grass, that is in poor shape and the stump left over from lilac. The yard itself has dark soil but it is rather stony(granite) and will defenitely need some digging to even the landscape out. I live in Finland in Uusimaa region around 22km from Helsinki and we have place were we can buy trees and bushes and plants, but as a beginner in gardening I am sure I will struggle. Your video inspired me and I will try my best to make this barren and boring looking yard flourish and bloom with colors and aromas of plants suitable for Nordic climate.

    Another wonderful video. Please could you make a video or direct me to one on trees suitable for planting in a smaller garden, those to avoid where drains and utilities are known to be routed and lastly those which compliment a nature garden. I know the Woodland Trust have a wide range and these can be chosen depending on locality.

      Sorry to be late in replying to this, UA-cam have a slightly odd way of alerting us to comments (either that or I'm not very good at navigating round my channel, which is quite likely. Trees for small gardens is a great idea and I will definitely do one soon. Thank you.

    Hello Alexandra,
    Thank you for your videos.
    I have a few questions, if I may.
    We have a medium size garden (25m x 15m roughly) and I want to plant trees. Ideally decidious with bloossom or autumn colour. However, we previously had a west facing garden and I really desire to have sun in my currently south facing garden.
    My question is, your garden looks lovely with so many trees, but do you get much sun because of them? I'd like a big tree, but I am worried it will take light from the garden.
    I want to build a pergola, we have a massive shed and already have a pine tree, a camellia and 2 small acers, so was thinking of just planting 2 or 2 small fruit trees (one brown fig, as we have a sunny corner with a small metal wall - back of the water feature - which will probably give it a lot of warmth).
    Would you suggest something different?
    I like to do the work in the garden myself; I enjoy it but I also want to save the money. With such big trees, do you need to hire professionals to help you with them?
    Would you be able to suggest what trees are good for a garden our size and orientation (south)?
    Or perhaps suggestions to each type of garden and suggestions of trees?
    Even where to position them depending on what you want to get (I guess this would depend on the house and distribution of the garden) but I was thinking it could be a good idea.
    Thank you for your time.
    Have a lovely week,
    Carolina from Hampshire (UK).

    A very informative video, though if I was a neighbour of yours I might be just a little peeved that so many of your trees are bang right up against the border thereby impinging on my garden space. Maybe, though, your border adjoins a street or similar. Anyway, please keep up the videos; I look forward each week to viewing them.

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  5 років тому +2

      Thank you, yes, That's an important point. The line of trees directly on the border is next to an alleyway, not a garden, and none of the tree roots anywhere in the garden impinge on other gardens as this garden is higher up than most of the neighbours' (the land drops away). There is some shade falling on one garden (from a tree around 70 ft away from its border!), as the sun moves round. But I've monitored it and it's about 40 minutes of extra shade. Most importantly, we prune, reduce and thin out the canopies regularly, which should prevent any one tree from blocking too much light. Balancing the requirements of people and plants for shade and light is difficult, as is the balance of trees benefiting the community conflicting with individuals wanting to sit in the sun...but it's good to stay aware of it. Thank you for reminding me to mention this sort of thing in future - it is an important issue.

    • @carefreedelight2355
      @carefreedelight2355 Рік тому

      I take your point, and it is a real issue. My neighbour's balcony on his first floor enables him to have a direct view into my garden. He is at the bottom of my garden. I inherited a large beech tree which he has attempted to 'prune' while we were not at home. He also left over the fence and cut a v shape into the young Hawthorne I put near the shared fence!!
      The neighbour on my left wants us to keep the `Beech unpruned so that he does not have a direct view of her garden!! I do need to put a few trees at the bottom of my garden to block his view ! That will throw shade( excuse the pun!) but not onto his balcony as that will still get direct light as it is West facing. I expect if I resist getting an evergreen that may help a bit. But sometimes I feel I am on the stage at the opera with someone sitting in the boxes looking directly down at me. Conifer anyone?

    Thank you so much. I’ve been trying to select a few trees for my garden. There’s so much to consider. Is it ok to plan to prune a tree to keep it fitting in your space and shade preference. I would love to see more detail.

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  3 роки тому

      Yes, pruning can keep a tree to the shape and size you want. It might be worth discussing that with the company you're buying the tree from, as trees vary in how they adapt to pruning.

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden

      I think Silver Birch 'Jacquemontii' is generally considered the whitest. That's what I have and I also wash my silver birch trunks just before the winter.

    Hi ! I noticed on this video you got another Liquidambar but the first one you got is via the nursery' suggestion. I'm thinking of getting one as a specimen tree in my medium sized garden. I can't decide between this or Betula Albonensis " Fascination" birch. What are your thoughts ? Thank you so much ! ❤️x

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  3 роки тому +1

      I like the liquidambar very much, but have found it quite slow growing and that it takes a bit of time to get established. It has lovely autumn colour, though, so I'm not sure which I'd choose.

    Silver Birch seeds are so messy in winter though?

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  5 років тому +1

      I dont really notice seeds from any of the 4 silver birches in our garden but that may be because we have a fairly untidy gardening style. I think that a few people do get worried by trees shedding seeds and feel they have to clear them up but it's not a common problem. It might be that those people live in a very windy area so they get more stuff blown into their houses. On the whole though I think most find silver birch fairly trouble free.
